    peace all,

Just a short compilation, as some might find it handy to share or link to.

Did prophet Muhammad know the future?

    Answer from The Quran

The Day God will gather the messengers and He will say "What was the response you received?"; they said "We have no knowledge, You are the Knower of all the unseen."

Say "I do not say to you that I possess God's treasures, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I say to you that I am an angel. I merely follow what is inspired to me." Say "Are the blind and the seer the same? Do you not think?"

Say "I do not possess for myself any benefit or harm, except what God wills. And if I could know the unseen, then I would have increased my good fortune, and no harm would have come to me. I am but a warner and a bearer of good news to a people who believe."

And they say "If only a sign was sent down to him from His Lord." Say "Indeed, the unseen is for God, so wait, and I will wait with you."

"Nor do I say to you that I have the treasures of God, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I say that I am an angel, nor do I say to those whom your eyes look down upon that God will not grant them any good. God is more aware of what is in their souls; in such case I would be among the wicked."

Say, "I am but a human being like you, being inspired that your god is One god. So whoever looks forward to meeting his Lord, then let him do good works and not set up any partner in the service of his Lord."

Say "None in the heavens or the Earth know the unseen except God. And they do not perceive when they will be resurrected."

Say "I am no different from the other messengers, nor do I know what will happen to me or to you. I only follow what is inspired to me. I am no more than a clear warner"

Only God knows the future and this knowledge can be attained only through divine revelations/signs (344, 3179, 1149, 12102, 302, 7226-2.

And for those who follow the Traditional Ahadith, Sahih Bukhari
    Volume 9, Book 93, Number 477
    Narrated Masruq

'Aisha said, "If anyone tells you that Muhammad has seen his Lord, he is a liar, for Allah says 'No vision can grasp Him.' (6.103) And if anyone tells you that Muhammad has seen the Unseen, he is a liar, for Allah says "None has the knowledge of the Unseen but Allah."

Short version for people to use, e.g. cut and paste

    None knows the future, including Muhammad (5109, 650, 7188, 1020, 1131, 18110, 2765, 469). Only God knows the future and this knowledge can be attained only through divine revelations/signs (344, 3179, 1149, 12102, 302, 7226-2.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

      Also

3363 People ask you concerning the Hour. Say," Knowledge of it is only with Allah . And what may make you perceive? Perhaps the Hour is near."
But all this must be balanced with 7226-28, which you've only mentioned as a side note.

What you wrote makes no sense at all.

On the one hand you say only God knows the future.

Then in the same sentence you say knowledge of the future can be attained (through revelation, signs).

Therefore you have opened the possibility of attaining knowledge of the future.

So your statement "only God knows the future" is against the basic rules of logic.

Or do Qur'anists have their own brand of logic?

          Peace.

The Quran teaches that there are people who have access to what can happen in the future. The story of Joseph interpreting dreams and predicting to the Egyptian Pharoah the famine that would happen after many years, is one such example.

The best example is that of Al-Khidr and his teachings to Moses (1865). In every instance this mystic conducted actions that was against Moses sense of reasoning and yet he showed the need for his actions by predicting the future.

Thus if there existed other Prophets who knew the future, it would not be far-fetched to accept that the Prophet Muhammad too knew the future. That would also explain the reason why he never bothered to ever name a successor to lead the Ummah after his death, for he would have already known that the future of the Muslims would be inevitably divisions into sunni, shia etc. and hatred for each other's community. On the day of Judgement, the Prophet also knew that he would stand as witness against Muslims that they rejected the Quran.

Looks to me, he clearly knew what he was talking about.

It is clear to anyone who has read all the verses I cite.

For example, assuming we believe Quran is the truth, then in it God has talked about life after death, stories from the past, judgement etc etc i.e. the unseen. For explicit confirmation of this, see 12102 which I cited.
Thus, can we then say we KNOW the unseen? Or is it more accurate to say we have been TOLD about the unseen? It is clearly the latter. We can then choose to believe in what we have been told.

We are reliant upon the source/author for this knowledge. Of our own selves we know not the unseen.

You have conveniently and subtly changed your position after I cornered you.

The title of your thread is "Did prophet Muhammed know the future?"

Now you are arguing that the Qur'an says that the Unseen lies exclusively in the knowledge of Allah.

The question is, why have you equated future with unseen?

The occurrence of the Day of Judgment is an event that shall occur in the future. The fact that it shall occur some time in the future excludes it from being something that is Ghayb (Unseen).

The fact that in the future you, me and all living human beings shall experience death proves that we ourselves have some knowledge of what will occur in the future.

However, based on the title of your thread, you are arguing that the Prophet (peace be upon him) has no knowledge of the future. You have not qualified your absurd and ridiculous assertion by saying "The Prophet (peace be upon him) has only partial knowledge of what shall occur in the future".

Had you substituted the word "future" with "unseen" or "unknown" there would be no objection.

But you deceptively used the word "Future" because your evil intention is to deny the Prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him).

By definition a Prophet is someone who has knowledge of the future revealed to him on the basis of which he makes prophecies.

If you say that the Prophet (peace be upon him) has no knowledge of the future, effectively you have impugned his status of Prophet and denied the fundamental pillar upon which the entire edifice of Religion and Divine Revelation is resting.

Nope. You can substitute unseen with future if you wish, my argument is still the same

Prophet Muhammad did not know the unseen/future.

He, like anyone of us who has access to The Quran, has been TOLD about the unseen/future. He, like any one of us, do not KNOW it of our own selves. We are reliant upon God for this information.

The occurrence of the Day of Judgment is an event that shall occur in the future. The fact that it shall occur some time in the future excludes it from being something that is Ghayb (Unseen).

No it doesn't. Even if some event will definitely occur in the future it still remains unseen. Put simply you haven't literally seen (i.e. witnessed) the future, ergo, unseen.

You have not qualified your absurd and ridiculous assertion by saying "The Prophet (peace be upon him) has only partial knowledge of what shall occur in the future".

And so have we (as you pointed out earlier with your 'Day of Judgement' example).

Thanks for showing that prophet Muhammad, in this regard, is like anyone else who has access to The Quran. ;D

(And that was the point of my thread. You can phrase it any way you like, but pay close attention to the way I worded it.)
