    Salaam,

Don't listen to Israfeel. He is a hardcore hadither.

Kissing? If you want to ACT like you are kissing someone, just ACT ? don't really kiss the person, I mean, don't let your lips touch the person's lips.

    Regards,
    Yuliana

    Salaam sis,

I should avoid such roles all together, I think that would be wisest.

      Salaam,

Even breathing is haram. It is makruh to be alive. We should kill ourselves had God not written that you should not kill yourself.

This makes me shake my head.

      God bless you

              Salaam brothers and sisters

For a long time (since school) I've been thinking of doing some theatre work. My school teacher always encouraged me to do plays (which I did at that time), however since leaving school I just didn't bother.
I wanted to return to acting however I'm in a bit of a struggle.

              Would kissing be haram?

I ask this because an actor/actress wouldn't be alone with the opposite sex, nothing more would happen, it would be a kiss and that's it. Now I'm not talking of the kind we see in films where it tends to go further, if anyone has watched theatre, kissing is the furthest it goes (99% of the time)

              Thanks for reading this.

              Peace

632 And this world's life is nothing but a play and an idle sport and certainly the abode of the hereafter is better for those who are righteous; so will you not reason?

I don't think acting in itself is haraam. But if your role requires you to do something haraam, like praying to an elephant God or whatever, then I doubt you would have an out by saying "But God, I was only acting."

                    Peace.

How do you say acting is not haram when it involves a person not being truthful and pretend to be something he is not?

O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do? Most hateful it is with Allah that you say that which you do not do. Sura 612-3

Acting is a form of entertainment which involves pretending.

Say "No reward do I ask of you for this (Qur'an), nor am I a pretender." (Sura 3886)

As believing Muslims, we should have utmost care to separate ourselves from the evil culture and habits of the disbelievers. Muslims are those people who stay away from evil things like cinemas, theaters, and other vain activities which drive people away from the remembrance and fear of Allah.

But there are, among men, those who purchase idle tales, without knowledge (or meaning), to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah and throw ridicule (on the Path) for such there will be a Humiliating Penalty. (Sura 316)

How can you say it is allowed for Muslims to engage in this ridiculous theater and acting business which has no benefit for either a person's faith and no benefit for humanity. It is a waste of time. Also, as the original poster said, his acting involves lewd and immoral activity such as kissing a woman. Do you honestly think Allah Holy and Majestic is He would ever sanction such satanic behavior?

                        Israfeel,
Take words out of context much? How does this have anything to do with acting? If acting was haraam, God would say it was haraam. God doesn't run out of words and God isn't shy. But I do give you credit for quoting 316. I've never heard a Muhammadian quote this verse. It's amazing how you can read the verse and completely miss the meaning. Anyway, to you be your religion and to us be ours. We follow completely different religions. Peace!

                          Dear Israfeel,

Don't you know that the word idle tales in verse 316 is translated from Lahwa al-Hadith?

                          Hadith means tales, narrations.

How can symphony, national anthem, orchestra be classified as idle tales that are used as mockeries?

In fact Mr Bukhari & Co's texts are examples of idle tales because contain too much nonsense such as drinking camel urine.

How can theatre and acting be considered as 'pretending' that are equal to hypocrisy? In fact the difference between acting for films or movies and pretending hypocritically are two different things. We know that movies on TV are not real actions that are equal to lies. In those verses you shared, God warns us not to be hypocrites.
                          Duh.

uh Israfeel i really disagree with you on that you CAN NOT say something is Haram when Allah did not say it is

on the other note go ahead and act i freaking love to act sing dance im in college studying for anthropology and i take acting courses and Arabic courses as well but i avoid like kissing part i had this lead role where it had a kissing scene but i talk to the director and he understood and he change that part in that role but some director can be really mean and if you get the lead role they want you to do exactly what it says on script..... but try to act don't hold back but be mindful of allah he dosnt want to make things hard for you but still be modest and enjoy this life help other do kind thing say kind thing strive to be better everyday and get closer to Allah

I agree that we can't say something is haram (forbidden, sinful) if Allah doesn't say it is.

However, somehow I sense that the behavior (kissing between unmarried couple) is not something favored by my Lord.

                              That's how I feel.

                              Peace.

As far as I can judge, obvious sexual kissing in films and acting is usually completely unnecessary and meaningless. It is just apying service to the fashion of exhibiting sex no matter what, even f it doe snot add anything, even if it is utterly boring, even if it means more tape minutes and come sout expensive. It is a duty. Kissing and bedbusiness in film and tv industry seems to be a tax everybody feels the obligation to pay. Better films and better paced could be made getting rid of that extra idiocy that adds nothing and takes away the action. It reminds me a lot of the shpherd's and shepherdesses novels of the XVII century, which were a must and which are unbearably boring. Chivalry novels have survived but not shepherds'. I do not even think that it is a matter of popular taste. We are just injected them whether we want them or not.

Like a said, a tax you pay if you want to be in the industry.

                                Salaam

                                  Dear friend Complex,

I'm sure you have seen different opinions here, I thought it would a good idea if you hear mine as well.

Lets think it out, Do you have sister ? If no, I'm sure you have a mother.
Kissing your sister/mother on the cheeks is it Haram ? of course not, why ? because she is your mother, and your intentions is to pay her respect, and show her your pure love as a mother/sister.

What about sexually kissing them? well I doubt this to be OK, so I would say its Haram. because we are not allowed to marry our own mothers and sisters.

Now, coming to other females, Do you count them as your sister or not ? If no, then you have not believed totally in Islam yet, If yes, then why do kissing your own sister for the intention of "acting" is Haram ? I would recommend you to act different and challenging roles actually, you will need this to build your personality, But I advice you to keep your intentions clean here, Imagine as if they are your biological sister, because they are your sister in many senses.

Now here some might questions Lip kissing...Lip kissing is again kissing, but our social life has assigned lip kissing to be between lovers, so if its normal for a culture to do lip kissing with mothers and cheek kissing with lovers... then this would totally be messed up, so we gotta take thing by intentions and by logic, not by culture.

Imagine yourself kissing an old poor lady on the forehead (in my culture, it means respect), we do that with sisters, and lovers and our mothers too. I kiss that old lady, same as you, without any dirty intention inside our hearts, as soon as its a bad intention, for me, I start doubting.

The same way I have no bad feelings for that old lady, for my mother, and my sister, Same way If I want to be an actor, my intention is to see the person with me that way, and my purpose is to make a good act rather having fun kissing people illegaly.

Always have a purpose in things, as long as your purpose is good, then you are good to go.

That is entirely my opinion and understanding of my religion,
You are free to accept or reject it.
I hope you it was useful.

                                  Wassalam,
                                  Yami.

                                    I second that.

Related with this matter, I suppose the muslim actor/actress who accept the Qur'an as guidance should pay attention to 2430-31.

However, I realize that the Qur'an interpretation may become different on each people's view.

So, maybe I shouldn't feel surprised anymore if there are 'muslims' who think it's OK to do kissing scene in films arguing that their intention is purely to perform their role as good professional actor/actress.

Oh well, if they already said something like that, I guess what I can say is Ok, it's their choice. There are no compulsion on them to follow what I believe.

Allah knows what are in their hearts and what is in my heart. AFAIK, commonly, people don't like being judged by other people.

                                    Peace.

                                      I second that.

Related with this matter, I suppose the muslim actor/actress who accept the Qur'an as guidance should pay attention to 2430-31.

However, I realize that the Qur'an interpretation may become different on each people's view.

I think it can even go as deep as saying what type of film are they participating in and how are they playing the role. Perhaps, it is a love story that is more involved with "pure" love. What I mean is, the films where people are at it like rabbits is something I don't understand, nor do I like it, nor do I think it's right, and if I were an actress I wouldn't do it. However, if I were an actress and the film I was in was a really touching love story where it wasn't really sexual and the kissing was meant to show a purity in the love, then I wouldn't see too much wrong in it. It all comes down to using the logic in your brain and also what your intentions are. But you're right, there is no compulsion in the deen/system of life/ attitude to life. It is up to people to go with what they feel guided towards. But I think it depends on many things apart from just sharing a kiss IMO.

                                      peace

                                        Dear Israfeel,

I completely agree with you bro Israfeel.
In the guise of rejecting hadiths people here are going overboard and it has become a fashion statement to reject everything.
Anything which leads you away from the remembrance of Allah is haram.

But I am also rejecting all of man-made hadiths (totally reject them all), and it's not for guise.

I don't support kissing between unmarried couple/partner, because I have sense that Allah does not favor something like that.

In addition, I think it is also not in line with God's command in the Qur'an .

                                          Peace. peace
