In Islam, Salah went through a number of stages before it was finalized in the form that we have today. So, let?s go through these stages Insha Allah.
Stage 1 The 2nd or 3rd year of the Message
The obligation of Salah was received early in the Prophetic mission. When the Prophet (saw) received the message he was ordered to establish and perform prayer. After 40 days, Al Mudather and Al Muzamel were also revealed ordering him (saw) to stand up and perform prayer.
Two prayers, one in the morning and one in the evening
When prophet, received first revelation , he was immediately ordered to establish and perform prayer. Al Mudther and Muzamel were revealed 40 days after the first revelation, and in both the Prophet (saw) was asked to stand up and perform Salah. The format of the prayer was not specific, but the times were. They were two prayers, one in the morning and one in the evening.
?Patiently, then, persevere for the Promise of Allah is true and ask forgiveness for thy fault, and celebrate the Praises of thy Lord in the evening and in the morning.?The first Qiblah was towards Jerusalem. The Prophet (saw) and his followers were instructed to face the direction of Jerusalem in Salah, and this continued for 15 years of the Prophet?s mission. Indeed, he (saw) prayed more towards Jerusalem than he (saw) did towards Makkah.
? . . . We appointed the Qibla to which you used to face, only to test those who followed the Messenger from those who would turn on their heels (From the Faith). Indeed it was (A change) momentous, except to those guided by Allah. And never would Allah Make your faith of no effect. For Allah is to all people Most surely full of kindness, Most Merciful.?
Was the form of Salah as we know it today? We don?t know. We don?t have much detail of how prayer was performed during that period of time, but we do know that it was performed two units at a time. We also know that Salah went through stages until it was finalized in the format we know today.Stage 2 The Night Prayer

Night prayer was made obligatory upon the Prophet (saw) and the believers. So, imagine being asked to stand up in prayer for the most part of the night?so for instance 6 out of 8 hrs of the night. And this was every single night for a whole year, for Allah (SWT) says
?O thou folded in garments! Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,- Half of it,- or a little less, Or a little more; and recite the Qur?an in slow, measured rhythmic tones.? -
The abrogation of the obligation of the Night Prayer . The Prophet (saw) and his followers continued in this strenuous vein, until the companions came to the Prophet (saw) and complained that it was very hard for them. We are talking here about every single night, so you can?t blame them. Allah (SWT) the Merciful, revealed this ayah offering them relief
?Thy Lord doth know that thou standest forth (to prayer) nigh two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and so doth a party of those with thee. But Allah doth appoint night and day in due measure He knoweth that ye are unable to keep count thereof. So He hath turned to you (in mercy) read ye, therefore, of the Qur?an as much as may be easy for you. He knoweth that there may be (some) among you in ill-health; others travelling through the land, seeking of Allah?s bounty; yet others fighting in Allah?s Cause, read ye, therefore, as much of the Qur?an as may be easy (for you); and establish regular Prayer and give regular Charity; and loan to Allah a Beautiful Loan. And whatever good ye send forth for your souls ye shall find it in Allah?s Presence,- yea, better and greater, in Reward and seek ye the Grace of Allah for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.?
With this ayah, night prayer became an optional prayer. But old habits die hard, and the companions did not quit but continued their legacy with the Night Prayer?and we have so many wonderful examples of their stories with this great form of worship. When Aisha (raa) was asked about the Prophet?s night prayer she said
?Have you not read the Surah, (O you wrapped up.). Verily, Allah made standing at night (for prayer) obligatory at the beginning of this Surah. So the Messenger of Allah and his Companions stood for an entire year during the night (in prayer) until their feet swelled. Allah held back the revelation of the end of this Surah for twelve months. Then, Allah revealed the lightening of this burden at the end of this Surah. Then, the standing for night prayer became voluntary after it used to be obligatory.?

They always ask us how do you know how to pray without hadiths. Yet their own sources say the prophet and his companions early on prayed twice with no specific way to pray. rotfl

I am just quoting a Sunni source. My remark is only in the end. You are right, their interpretation of the verses do not make sense. I was just interested in their claim about how the prophet and early Muslims prayed before the night journey story where they claim the 5 prayers were introduced.

Does the verse 1779 and 7320 mention the same prayer or recitation ?
1778 You shall hold the communion at the setting of the sun until the darkness of the night; and the Qur'an at dawn; the Qur'an at dawn is witnessed.
1779 And from the night you shall reflect upon it additionally for yourself, perhaps your Lord would grant you to a high rank.7320 Your Lord knows that you rise a little less than two thirds of the night, and half of it, and one third of it, as well as a group of those who are with you. God measures the night and the day. He knows that you will not be able to keep up, so He pardons you. So study what is made easy of the Quran. He knows that there will be sick among you, and others that venture out in the land seeking from God's bounty, and others who are fighting in the cause of God, so study what you can of it. Hold the contact prayer and contribute towards betterment and give God a loan of righteousness. Whatever you put forth yourselves, you will find it with God, for it is better and a greater reward. Seek God's forgiveness, for God is Forgiving, Compassionate.
Also what does "reflecting upon it" mean in 1779 ? prayer or recitation of quran mentioned in previous verse 1778 ?
One more question I have
--Why the three prayers in night is prayed loudly and the two prayers during day is prayed silently even though the correct way is mentioned in 17110 ?

Where are we right now? I would say between 1st and 2nd stage.
There is already literature available that debunks the traditional understanding of salat and Islamic rituals in general. In the last few years a lot of progress has been made.
We just have to keep working at getting the truth out.

Our Lord, I have settled SOME (UNSPECIFIED NUMBER) of my OFFSPRING in an UNCULTIVATED valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that THEY may OFFER / PERFORM / ESTABLISH the RITUAL SALAT . So make hearts among the people incline toward THEM and provide for THEM from the fruits that THEY might be grateful 1437
Who are THEY and THEM in the above verse? Is it ONLY ISMAIL? OR PLUS ISMAIL? Who is / are that / those PLUS offspring?
What is LI YUQIMU that they MAY (EXPRESSING POSSIBILITY) NOT SURE.
Was Prophet Abraham not SURE that his offspring WILL offer / perform / establish the RITUAL SALAT?
Anyway the PURPOSE behind the settling of the sons of Abraham in the uncultivated valley was to OFFER / PERFORM / ESTABLISH the RITUAL PRAYER.
I would like to ask a question. Were prophets and messengers sent to OFFER RITUAL PRAYERS? If the answer is YES then go ahead and offer the NONSENSE RITUAL PRAYER and if NO then ponder over the WORD AQIM (ESTABLISH) and think what is that which can be ESTABLISHED.
Did Abraham and SOME (unspecified number) of his offspring (although the HADITH denies Ishaq being present in MECCA and mentions only one OFFSPRING Ismail) were settled to offer the RITUAL SALAT?
If SALAT is a Ritual Salat, then why the hell they traveled all the way from Palestine to Mecca? (although the story is a straight lift from the Bible and made additions to it (MECCA) and which is again not validated by the Quran) They would have better offered the SALAT at their homes.
1400 years have passed and the traditionalist have yet to prove the RITUAL SALAT from the QURAN. The 5 names of the prayers, the fixed timings of the prayers (according to mechanical watch), the units of prayer, the recitations (WHAT) in the prayer, the Ruku, the Sujud, the Qiblah, the Tahiyya, the sending of blessings on the prophet via Allah, the Salam and REHMAT at the end to WHOM (to two or more than two person / angel (Allah knows to whom).
What is not "IN" the QURAN is a "CONJECTURE".

And had they ESTABLISHED the Taurat and the Injeel and that which was sent down unto them from their Lord, they would have devoured from above them and from beneath them. Among them is a community right-doing; but many of them - vile is that which they work! 566
The Torah and the Injeel were sent down as guidance to mankind and to ESTABLISH the commands therein. The Quran was also sent down to be ESTABLISHED, but the Muslims failed in their covenant with Allah
Say thou people of the Book! You are not on anything until you ESTABLISH the Taurat (the commands, instructions, guidance therein) and the Injeel (the commands, the instructions, the guidance therein) and (ESTABLISH) that which is now sent down unto you (Quran) from your Lord. And that which hath been sent down unto thee (Quran) will surely increase many of them in exorbitance and infidelity; so mourn thou not over and disbelieving people 568
The people of the Book are not on anything unless they ESTABLISH their books plus Quran. In the same way Muslims also do not stand upon anything unless they ESTABLISH the Quran.
Not once did Allah say, O ye who believe, ?Establish the QURAN? WHY? Think over it?
