    Peace

For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the HEARTS which are in the BREASTS. Al Quran 2246

The highlighted words HEART ( Kalab ? Root ) and CHEST/BREAST ( SADAR- Root ) is mentioned 168 and 46 times respectively if we count all the occurrences of words derived from the two roots.

Hundreds of translators would translate these 2 words as ?heart? and ?chest? in almost in every occurrence of the words and even to the native Arabic speaker it means just that. Also translators quite casually interchanged the meanings whenever they found it fit.

But going through the word occurrences in the Quran and its use, it?s interesting to note the Quran actually says something much more direct and simple.

For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the THOUGHTS which are in the MINDS. Al Quran 2246

If we check, the 2 meanings ?thought/thinking? and ?mind?, are applicable to almost every occurrence of ? kalb? and ?Sadr? in the Quran. And also it communicates a clear message by use of these words.

    Therefore,

?Allah comes in between a man and his thought? 824 and not really ?a man and his heart?.

"Our Lord!" (they say), "Let not our thinking/thoughts deviate now after Thou hast guided us, but grant us mercy from Thine own Presence; for Thou art the Grantor of bounties without measure? 38 and "not heart deviate".

For He ( God) knows well the secrets of the ?mind? 4224 and not ?secrets of the chest?.

Have We not expanded thee thy mind 941 as opposed to a narrow mind and not ?expanded your breast or chest? ( the wrong understanding here with heart/chest led to the Hadith and commentaries on surgical opening of Messengers breasts and cleaning of the heart)

Likewise, every time you apply these meaning the actual message in the Quran stands out.

Also the correct understanding of these words can be crucial in understanding some important verses. For instance 2689, is our goal according to this verse as set out by Abraham, is to bring to Allah ? a peaceful heart? or ? a thinking/thoughts which is at peace?.

Your conclusion about the goal is absolutely right.

        Good post!

I suspect that 'heart' is used figuratively for 'mind' in many languages... Swedish being one such language where you e.g. can ask someone "vad har du p? hj?rtat?" which literally means "what's on your heart?" meaning "what's on your mind?"/"What do you want to say?".

Also, in traditional Chinese medicine, the mind is said to rest or sleep in the heart... so there again we have this connection.

In fact, the single root cause that puts us in trouble and separate us from God is our blind, i.e. our unconscious and unaware captivity and life INSIDE and purely BY our minds. The thing is that our minds CANNOT connect to God. Yes, our minds can make up images of God, intellectual images... but the minds cannot SENSE or CONNECT to God. That's why we cannot reach God by science or thinking, purely. We must have something else also... to connect... some sort of spiritual (no, not religious!) side of us... i.e. the part of us which is NOT the mind. The most devastating misconception we have is that we are our minds. We are NOT our minds! Absolutely not.

The realm dealing with thoughts, beliefs, mind and mind patterns is an extraordinarily interesting field, necessary to study in order to understand yourself. Psychology however is NOT the way to go. Many traditions, ancient and "newer", teach how we are not our minds, and how we can purify ourselves through certain types of meditation.... but most of us remain unconsciously lost in our own minds... with the result of us becoming (or rather remaining) out of control and hopeless and away from God (the real Thing; not silly images taught by religion).

When we no longer are slaves to the mind, being tossed back and forth by the whims of the mind, without any real control... then we are getting to real peace. Of course, we must have a mind; it's a God-given, marvelous tool... and we should not try to shut it down.... but we should also not be ruled by it. No need to go to extremes in either direction.

        Peace!

          Peace,

In America we use the term, "let's have a heart to heart", it's a figure of speech for intimate conversation.
Or "open up my heart" or "his heart was in the right place" meaning despite the outcome the intentions
were good. The Quran uses idioms as well as metaphors.

          God bless

                  From http//www.quran434.com/wife-beating-islam.html#part1 section 16

***qalb is often used like the English word "heart", meaning the physical organ, but more often for the locus of feelings/intuitions etc.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

Obviously 3.7 does not prohibit someone to "believe" verses relating to heart/qalb.. .

But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it" (3.7)

and the mutasyaabihaat can only be explained by the muhkamat, and thus... becoming the muhkamat.

                      Salamun alaikum,

307 is about the Format and Organization of Grand Qur'aan. Like the two sub-sets of the Miscellany of Qur'aan, this Verbal Passage identifies two types of Religious Scholars-learned men with reference to their psyche and attitude towards Qur'aan, primarily relating to the society of believers.

Yes I agree, the former are those who "believe" but "don't make rulings" from the mutasyaabihaat...

Others are those who "believe" and "make rulings" from the mutasyaabihaat..

both are those who "believe" and believers

and of course, there is no specific prohibition in verse 3.7, ie. "do not" ... only a tendency to deviate..

therefore I believe it is to be treated as guidance and there are rooms for further understanding

provided always, the understanding is build from the muhkamat (all true premises) ..

this is the main premise of verse 3.7

clear authority or all true premises, and the guidance.. is from Allah.

                        , "Our Lord,
                        let not our hearts deviate
                        after You have guided us
and grant us from Yourself mercy
                        Indeed, You are the Bestower.
                        38

Indeed, from Allah nothing is hidden in the earth nor in the heaven.
It is He who forms you in the wombs however He wills.
There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

To me qalb does not mean heart.

Fuaad is the word used for heart in alQuraan .
Qalb means turning upside down. Allah has given us ability to turn things upside down to look at its faults/errors in order to accept or reject it.

For example if we go to buy a show piece or some precious item, we look for it from all angles to see it is perfect or it has some fault or unfinished work at some corner or point. This ability is called qalb.

This is required in order to check out the correct understanding of aayaat of alQuraan. Without using our qalb along with our hearing and sight, we will be like cattle .

                              Peace

Two words were discussed in the post, KALB and SADR , many of the responses just rushed into explaining the "heart" without considering the use of these 2 words within the Quran. All lexicons and concordances we use were written very recently and will not compare with the use of a word within the Quran in bringing the exact meaning to such a word.

The two words are used in the Quran in simple conversations and in matters where the verse communicates clearly without a hidden element , again rushing to call these Mutasaabihat is naive at its best. Please check all the application in the Quran.

Rushing to call many verses in the Quran as metaphors has become a fashion for people who do not even know the definition of "metaphor".

mmkhan, thanks for bringing up Fuada this is very relevant. But we both know its not the physical heart either. There is a difference. Lets discuss it.

manoffaith , zulf , it is another level of understanding. God bless.
