I am currently a new Muslim as of 4 months ago. So i am still learning quite a lot. I have a question regarding the validity of the story of Abraham. Would someone please help me figure out where in the Quran does it mention that Abraham built the Kaaba. If its is not in the Quran then I would like to know why we should pray towards the Kaaba in mecca. Many of my traditional muslim friends who are sunni say refer to sura 2 verse 143. But this is not sufficient enough for me to pray towards the Kaaba. What direction is this verse referring to if it is not the kaaba and why is the Kaaba so significant.

      Dear sister,

      Salamun Alaikum.

From the Quran's testimonies, Prophet Abraham (pbuh) did not build the Kaaba, but he built the first house of worship in Bakkah

The first House (of worship) appointed for men was that at Bakkah Blessed and a guidance for all kinds of beings (396)

But after the advent of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the ancient rites of worship and hajj were reinstituted at the Kaabah.

      As for prayer direction

We hear our Lord and we obey "...So turn your face in the direction of the sacred Mosque (Arabic almasjidi alharami) and wherever ye are, turn your faces in that direction" (2144)

Those that whisper into the breast of mankind only seek to cause discord and coerce our mind to focus on the insignificant and at the expense of wider purpose. Let us seek refuge in God from these voices in whatever guise they may reach us and may God help us always to remain cognizant of them. (4136)

Our direction to face during our salat is the Masjid Al-Haram, have no doubt about it.

      Regards.

There are multiple threads where you will find the al-masjid-al-haram is most likely not a physical location. I think this translation you've made needs to be re-evaluated. What makes you assume that it means the "sacred mosque"?

But anyway... thats a whole other thread...

        peace

          Dear sister sushi1992,

          May peace be with you.

Thanks for the advice of looking back at the old threads where Masjid Al-Haram has been discussed multiple times. I am well aware of those contentions of the members who have discussed this issue at extensive lengths and details. But in my all humbleness, I do not agree with their arguments since there seemed to be many flaws both logically and linguistically. And if I accept their rendition of Masjid Al-Haram to not mean a physical location, then it would clearly create a lot of contradictions with other verses of the Quran.

          Regards.

            Peace scribbler,

What contradictions arise when we use it as a spiritual direction and not a physical one. There are more contradictions if we take it as a physical one. For example, we are told to direct ourselves towards it wherever we may be. That is not possible if it's a physical location. Also, we are told that polythiests can never be able to enter it. There are polythiests that can enter a physical location, but you do not know it...

But anyway, I don't want to direct this away from the original OP's question about Abraham in the Qur'an. This can be discussed elsewhere if necessary .

            peace

              peace Dhynasah, all,

              Welcome to the forum.

It is good to see you are doing further research on this. I have been studying this subject for a while so I may be of some help

Would someone please help me figure out where in the Quran does it mention that Abraham built the Kaaba.

Nowhere in Quran does it say that. However, that is the most common interpretation of verses 396-97, 1437 and 2125-127.

The word "kaabah" is mentioned in Quran 595 and 597 only. Abraham is not even mentioned in chapter 5.

If its is not in the Quran then I would like to know why we should pray towards the Kaaba in mecca. Many of my traditional muslim friends who are sunni say refer to sura 2 verse 143. But this is not sufficient enough for me to pray towards the Kaaba.

Quran does not say anywhere we should pray towards the kaabah, however, that is the common interpretation of verses 2142-150.

What direction is this verse referring to if it is not the kaaba and why is the Kaaba so significant.

I recently completed a significant study of the verses and terms you are researching, see here

Thank you to all of you who contributed in this thread so far, as I am also lately very inclined to think that kibla us not a physical thing, not to mention that Abraham (Aba-Brahman - father-brama) was never in Saudi Arabia?

No idea, but remember avoid any speculations within Islam (possibility put lie on God/Allah).
