I am interested in the word 'orphan' in the Quran. I do not speak Arabic. What are the roots of the arabic word that is used? Is the meaning always the same? If anyone is aware of previous discussions on orphans and related topics, I would be grateful if you posted the links.

Any help would be appreciated .

      peace,

To determine the root of a word and its occurrences has never been easier. Simply go to http//corpus.quran.com and type in a verse with the word "orphan" in it (top right box), then it will show you the verse word for word, then all you do is click on the word you want to investigate and it will tell you the root and present all its occurrences.

      e.g. 43
      http//corpus.quran.com/wordbyword.jsp?chapter=4&verse=3

      click on the word "orphans"
      http//corpus.quran.com/qurandictionary.jsp?q=ytm#(436)

The triliteral root y t mm ( &#1605 occurs 23 times in the Quran ......

      occurrences listed
      etc
      .

You may wish then to look up the root on Project Root List http//www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

I found this on root list

Ya-Ta-Miim = orphan, fatherless, become isolated or lonely, solitary, weary, jaded, become widow, become without father before puberty/maturity.

It occurs with the word , 'the needy', in several verses. I'd like to look up that word too. What is the root word for ' the needy' in Arabic?

Surely you can use the same method I mentioned before to find the root?
