is it haram to be friends with the opposite gender?

anyways I wanted to know since alot of the non quran alone muslims will say that it is Haram and also they would say it is haram to have physical contact with them. Now I wonder do you think that it is all haram to shake hands with the opposite gender or hug them? since I myself have alot of friends from the opposite gender and I huged them from time to time so I was wondering wether it is haram. And also if you think or not so, can you provide a quote. THANKS

No, not haram at all. Don't listen to the traditional 'Muslims' because they love following Ancient Athens and Byzantine culture.
But I think this verse may help you on making friends with opposite gender
(4913) O people, We created you from a male and female, and We made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Surely, the most honorable among you in the sight of God is the most righteous. God is Knowledgeable, Expert.

The use of segregation is a modern concept. Before, segregation was only imposed during prayer, and even then often without a divider. During the time of the prophet, Women would heckle men late to the mosque as they had to go past them to get to the front. This practice did not appear to be discouraged, which meant direct contact between men and Women happened on a regular basis.
I associate mostly with the opposite gender, I get better conversation. If the conversation is halal, and we keep to ourselves, our contact is halal. I'm married and most often so are they, it doesn't lead to anything untoward unless you make it.

Well a hug can be very innocent while a handshake or even a look can be salcious, always depending on the person involved. That is why the Qur'an says that "the garment of righteousness is the best", and this inner attitude is also important with physical acts.
