Well, just another confirmation of the Quran by science.

Fasting for as little as three days can regenerate the entire immune system, even in the elderly, scientists have found in a breakthrough described as "remarkable".
Although fasting diets have been criticised by nutritionists for being unhealthy, new research suggests starving the body kick-starts stem cells into producing new white blood cells, which fight off infection.
Scientists at the University of Southern California say the discovery could be particularly beneficial for people suffering from damaged immune systems, such as cancer patients on chemotherapy.
It could also help the elderly whose immune system becomes less effective as they age, making it harder for them to fight off even common diseases.
The researchers say fasting "flips a regenerative switch" which prompts stem cells to create brand new white blood cells, essentially regenerating the entire immune system.

Does this article refer to full fasting( no food or water for 3 days) or partial fasting ( eating and drinking at night only, or fasting from food for 3 says but not water?? Is there any research that shows people who live in poverty and only eat / drink once every 3 days are healthier and live longer?

And the reported critisism was just the usual bs.... personal and emotional opinion, nothing scientific.

"However, some British experts were sceptical of the research.
Dr Graham Rook, emeritus professor of immunology at University College London, said the study sounded "improbable". Oh, it sounds improbable?! Is that your scientific and professional opinion? Does it sound as improbable as you having an objective and open mind. Have you perhaps heard of the scientific method?

?But I think the most sensible way forward would be to synthesize this effect with drugs. I am not sure fasting is the best idea. People are better eating on a regular basis.? Yeah, I wonder why you're not sure. I'm sure you must have many much better ideas than something which is holistic, natural, free-of-cost, non-invasive, non-poisonous and easy.

            Idiots.
Ok, so now I have vented. Sorry for the unnecessary post.

Thank God there are many voices, even medical professionals and scientists, ready to explore things from new angles.
            Peace

However, concerning the two first questions asked y Lena

Does this article refer to full fasting( no food or water for 3 days) or partial fasting ( eating and drinking at night only, or fasting from food for 3 says but not water??

I am interested to know. Fast is of many kinds, so I would like to know what each does, more specifically the kind we do in Ramadan.

As to the poor who do not eat, I would not draw many conclusions from that because any way it is probable that what and when they eat would not be dictated by health but by opportunity.

              Don't get cross, Sony, please.

              Salaam

The fasting here seems to be about not eating food. I assume drinking water is ok.

yeah, a lot of people would die if they didn't drink water for 3 days.

I think there is evidence that starvation increases the life span of mice, it seems not to be the case with monkeys however.

                            Peace all,

Personally, I don't require any scientific validation for commandments issued to us by the Omniscient.

awm, as I've understood it from the Quran, is primarily an exercise in taqw. Its purpose is to bring us closer to the Creator.

Any physiological benefits?whether putative or actual?are purely incidental to its being a Quranic requirement.

It is important to remember that abstinence of food and drink is only one component of awm, the more important components involve the restraint of one's self through abstinence of anger, vice and sexual relations. It is thus more apt to translate "awm" as "abstinence", not as "fasting".

Notwithstanding this, several scientific studies conducted on non-human subjects, which are significantly older than the one shared in the first post of this thread, have established to some extent the benefits of food abstinence for continuous days or for alternate days.

It should also be noted that fasting has its greatest effect when observed throughout the year, not only for one month therein.

                            See below.

I do not take it as a punishment. It sounds ridiculous to me. I take it as a challenge or as a way of putting me to the test, a purification of will and of eating.

                                        Peace,

The physical body needs a sustained supply of food and drink and more than only a highly temporary interruption is a punishment if consumables are readily available.

If fasting is going to have a positive effect it needs to be limited otherwise it risk having a decaying effect on things like muscularity because the body toggles over to survival mode and diverts focus on primary functioning. To a beginning features such as endurance may improve because the body adjusts so that you will have a higher ability to hunt prey because it wants you to get food soon.

Irritation and patience may fluctuate and it is difficult to focus. You cannot optimally perform a physical job you are employed to do and there may be a danger in physically demanding job if your blood sugars get imbalanced because you may fumble and cause an accident.

Apart from that the fasting everywhere except in 2183-187 is about a way to redeem for a sin through fasting.

                                        Have faith

I also see fasting as a challenge, and it does have proven health benefits when done right.

Yes it is harder to control your mood but that is part of the challenge. When you can control your emotions while you are hungry, controlling your emotions when you aren't becomes much easier.

It's kinda like how baseball players use an extra heavy bat to practice with so that the normal bat they use feels lighter to them.

However if it is affecting the health/safety of you or the people around you then it shouldn't be done imo.
