5101 O you who believe, do not ask about things which, if revealed to you, would harm you; and if you ask about them after the Qur'an has been sent down, then they will become clear to you. God pardons for them, and God is Forgiving, Compassionate.
5102 A people before you had asked the same, then they became rejecters in it.There was another thread dealing with the same a while back but I didn't find an explanation that satisfies. It's commonly used to shut down questioning in regards to religious matters. Wondering if anyone has analysed the verses before and what they think it's talking about or a link to where it's been discussed well. Will the questions become clear or the reasoning behind why we aren't supposed to ask them? Also, what is meant by "became rejecters in it"?
Any insights/help appreciated. Thanks.

Forgive me i bring a hadith to throw light on this. I can't remember textually, but it is in itself an indictment of hadiths.
It goes int he sense that people asked the prophet this, and then this, and then this, asking for details of this and more details, and he was bothered not because he did not wnat to answer or they annoyed him but because he felt that automatically when he said anything they would take as an order and not as his feeling or opinion, so at a certain point he said do not ask me so much, because afterwards you will feel bound by what I say, and it is not obligations it is just my opinion.
The thing is that may be the Qur'an points to that. That we are not in a position yet to know certain things, and if we push we may get answer we cannot understand or do not make sense, because we lack the knowledge of the ground on which those questions rest.
For instance, scientific matters. Any question about ADN or which inolved it at a certain time, my throw people into the weirdest beliefs, because they did not have a map of where those things fit. So, in due course they might be answered but not there and then.
That is something I could make of it right now.

IMO it will defeat the main theme of the Quran, "unity in diversity through freedom of religion"
it will distress the society
and it will cause disunity in the society. . . no freedom. The path of those You have blessed,
not of those who have incurred the wrath, <- the deniers
nor the misguided. <- the ignorant ones
17And Moses said to his people "God orders you
- to slaughter <- Allah could have accepted if they don't ask, only 2 conditions
- a heifer."
They said "Do you mock us?" <- because there is no detail
He said "I seek refuge with God that I not be of the ignorant ones."They said "Call upon your Lord for us that He may clarify which it is."
He said "He says it is a heifer
- neither too old
- nor too young,
- an age between that.
So now do as you are commanded."
They said "Call upon your Lord for us that He may clarify what color it is."He said "He says
- it is a yellow heifer
- with a strong color,
- pleasing to those who see it."
They said "Call upon your Lord for us that He may clarify which one it is,
for the heifers all look alike to us and we will, God willing, be guided."He said "He says it is a heifer which
- was never subjugated to plough the land,
- or water the crops,
- free from any blemish." (now it is 11 conditions)
They said "Now you have come with the truth."
And they slaughtered it,
though they had nearly not done so. <- distress the society268-72

Peace,
To me it feels like it says do not ask question that if answered to you without any experience (of the real decree) would harm you. Asking them in the light of the recitation they would understand better, and God willing, not be turned away from the mindful path.
I take it that the 5101 works together with the context, so let us check the surrounding passages.
599 The messenger is only to deliver. And God knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
5100 Say ?The bad and the good are not equal, even if the abundance of the bad impresses you.? So be aware of God, O you who possess intelligence, that you may succeed.
5101 O you who believe, do not ask about things/wishes/questions which if clarified (made) experienced/known to you, would harm you (or make you doubt probably, harm your faith) - and if you ask about them with the Qur?an/recitation being revealed given then they will become clear/experienced/known to you. God pardons for them, and God is Forgiving, Compassionate.
5102 A people before you had asked the same, then they became rejecters/opponents in it.EDIT I have to change something which is untrue to the translation. The first case is ask questions that are made known to you. The conclusion and principle about the meaning of the passage still remains the same though, basically. I take it as being overly critical to God and the decree before you have really experienced the thing. Like many become atheists today after having been Muslims and many leave because of the strange rituals and stuff in Islam.
from root ,the word seems to indicate that something is not experienced by a person. The word is likely misinterpreted by traditional interpreters.
It is interesting that Corpus Qur'an says this alternative in comprehension for the word
Active participle
(112719) bdiya immature in opinionActive participle
(332011) bdna living in (the) desertI suspect that it is slightly misunderstood traditionally. It comes quite clear that the word, as a whole, means to experience something. Check the narration with Adam and Eve and their (alleged) bodies
719 ?And O Adam, reside you and your mate in the paradise, and eat from it as you both wish, and do not come near this tree, else you will be of those who have wronged.?
720 But the devil whispered to them, to reveal to them what was not apparent/experienced/known to/by them of their bodies; and he said ?Your Lord did not prohibit you from this tree except that you would become angels, or you would be immortal.?
721 And he swore to them ?I am giving good advice.?
722 So he misled them with deception; and when they tasted the tree, their bodies became apparent/experienced/known to them, and they rushed to cover themselves with the leaves of the paradise; and their Lord called to them ?Did I not prohibit you from that tree, and tell you that the devil is your clear enemy??Their bodies were there all the time, but Adam and Eve (?) experienced their bodies for the first time in the passage above. From a traditional understanding it seemed a bit strange if their bodies were invisible prior to the event. They merely understood their nakedness.
As for the trilateral N - Z - L (reveal) I take that the word is stigmatized and it is not so exaggerated. It means something more worldly like "given". I have cross-checked this like a maniac and it is the suggestion that I have right now.
ashyaa's root can mean either thing or wish/will and in the context above I rather would give it a wishful meaning, like a question.
It seems the passage talks about rushing into having things explained and because you are yet inexperienced and unable to comprehend you risk facing away from the path of God. Could perhaps be for a newcomer to the Qur'an asks about details from just about any source of information without really becoming experienced with what it really says and then become an atheist because it looks like the Qur'an speaks of unrighteous things like killing apostates or cutting off the hand of a thief.
It is my own mind's thinking when I read the passage in the light that I could bring about it.
It does not seem to be apparent whom you ask in the passage above, but just general and by not asking them in the light of the recitation (Qur'an) given to you, you risk turning away from God. It could be inferred that it may be just asking your random mullah or imam a question about faith, without the recitation been experienced by you. Many people leave Islam because they feel it advocates a lot of strange stuff and they serve an egotistical grumpy man in Heathen.
This is my take on this by a brief investigation, <1 hour on it. I could spend more time, but I am exhausted from salat.
Check the 5103 which may be that the person in 5101 is beginning to doubt what kind of strange faith Islam is from what they get to hear from people
5103 God did not decree any restrictions for combining of livestock, or roaming livestock, or ones that give twin births, or a male camel freed from work; but the people who rejected invented lies to God, and most of them do not comprehend.
It may just as well be a continuation on the topic from 5101. Like I said; my take is that you ask questions with a mind biased by traditional sects/religions.
Have faith

Perhaps the bold words are causing the problem since they are not in the Arabic text of Qur'aan. Time adverb has been overlooked alongwith tense of the verbs and thus the time frame.
O those/you who proclaim to have accepted-become believers, listen;
You should not ask questions-seek answers about such matters that if it is disclosed for you it could be embarrassing/troublesome for you people.
And if you ask such question during the period the Qur'aan is being revealed gradually, it would be disclosed for you. Allah the Exalted has overlooked it.

Or do you intend that you might raise questions to the Messenger of you people in the manner as was Ms questioned aforetimes?Be mindful; Whoever purposely converts from the state-announcement of acceptance-belief to refusal-disbelief, thereby, for reason of conversion he is certainly the one who has forthwith lost the Way of Dynamic balance-Straight Path.

I think this is valid for us today. The Qur'an is being revealed to us gradually. That is, it is there, but we grasp meanings as we go along. We do not grasp averything as soon as we first read the Qur'an. We should give us time to be in a disposition to get what it has to offered and we have not yet grasped.

basically by this you mean asking so called authorities without having experienced/verified it yourself? however that's what we're supposed do in most/all cases?...was wondering if these verses meant something different but to clarify, in your opinion it's a reiteration of sorts?O those/you who proclaim to have accepted-become believers, listen;
You should not ask questions-seek answers about such matters that if it is disclosed for you it could be embarrassing/troublesome for you people.

How do we know what questions will lead to which answers that could be embarrassing/troublesome for us unless we ask? I mean, if we know it would be troublesome then why would we ask? It appears that it is in regards to questions of the sort that we should know may cause us issues? And regarding these questions, are they very specific that are answered/disclosed by the quran, or are they general in the sense that our reasoning as to why we shouldn't go down certain paths made clear with the revelation?People are not being barred from asking questions. Advise is with regard to the nature of the question, answers of which could be embarrasing or trouble causer.
We also have the intentions with which questions are asked. One can be genuinely concerned and ask a question, the same question can be asked by someone wanting to cause trouble as well, or due to laziness etc. Does the intention/mindset play a part? Or would one say these questions are of a specific type no matter who asks them with whatever intentions? And why should the answers to these questions cause them to reject? Should we be afraid of questioning because it may create doubt? That doesn't sound right. Seems more like the mindset behind the line of inquiry rather than the inquiries themselves.Thank you Mazhar for pointing out 2107/8/9 etc. That's an interesting connection.

One question that comes to my mind is that one might ask whether so and so is really my father? We can even today get the sure answer by DNA test. Recently we had this question with regard to a court decision about alleged daughter of a political leader. She was declared as "love child". Mother claimed she is the daugther of that political leader and asked for the DNA test. He declined for the test. Reason is obvious, matter would have been exposed, causing embarrassment and threat to his political career.
Had somebody asked this question during revelation, it would have been disclosed as per Allah's promise. Answer could have been disturbing for himself, his mother, and gentleman acknowledged in the society as his father.
One can understand today why four eye witnessess are required for establishing the charge of Zinna against a woman and man. If circumstantial or scientific evidence was allowed, today one man could have alleged Zina and could have asked for DNA or medical test to prove his allegation.
Similarly one could naively ask when would I die. The answer could have brought him severe shock.
People did ask questions that are quoted in Qur'aan. Questions are asked to get rid of doubts and uncertainities. So certain doubts and uncertainities should be let as they are veiled, may be disclosure becomes troublesome.

Peace savage_carrot,
Not sure myself, but do you have more information on why you think so?
Just down the discourse repetitive analysis of the root's occurrence. I feel sent down/revealed is awfully exaggerated. That is all. How about just... given sun
Besides the traditional "down from Heaven" is just a bit too imaginative. You likely know that it comes from any direction and in fact no direction at all. God is everything around us and we cannot see God. Thus I opt for just given a scripture yes
The only other possible is transmit or relay, but I found another word that has the meaning of "relay" information.
I may make an independent study of the phenomenon though. Have patience.
basically by this you mean asking so called authorities without having experienced/verified it yourself?
I am not sure if I was clear enough despite working towards a good explanation of the case. The thing in the passage is that believers should not ask around for with questions (any source) outside the light of Qur'an (or the rightful decree whatsoever). It is also easy to realize based on the context if you continue to read down the passages on, for example, 5103 that I mentioned in my previous post. You should simply not believe in any kind of nonsense that you without being experienced, it says.
You possibly saw my comparison of the root word and that is seemed quite clear that it was not absolutely accurately interpreted traditionally. The passages with Adam are given much better light and their bodies were rather unknown to them rather than invisible, i.e. they did not know about the sense of nakedness, you know. In other word they received an experience. Their bodies were not invisible before Satan told them to "eat the apple" (whatever), only that they were not aware that they were naked.
Same kind of inference should be used on 5101 too to be able to derive the right meaning. They do something like the sectarians that would harm them (likely spiritually) before reading it in the light of Qur'an. The ones who distort the deen it talks about in 5101, in my opinion though as not to sound arrogant and not to fall in the same trap as they have.
It seems many people come to Islam without experience and many begin doing the wrong things when they ask what they have to do and that is without any further enlightenment of the faith itself. They may follow like lemmings.
was wondering if these verses meant something different but to clarify
Yes. It was quite different even if it looks the same; "be known to" or experienced is very different from clarified.

The thing is that may be the Qur'an points to that. That we are not in a position yet to know certain things, and if we push we may get answer we cannot understand or do not make sense, because we lack the knowledge of the ground on which those questions rest.
This point is separately discussed in Qur'aan.
Contradicting it, do they keep saying to people "He Muhammad has drafted, compiled it Qur'aan with his own effort, perception, knowledge, understanding?"
You the Messenger ask them "If you think that it is authored by me, thereby, you bring one Surat Segment authored in semblance of a Segment of it Qur'aan.
And for the needful, you invite-get help of all your friends-helpers-lawyers you have access to other than Allah the Exalted;
Try it, if you were truthful in your assertion about authorship of Qur'aan."The fact of the matter is that they have contradicted for the reason that they have not comprehended-encompassed the knowledge contained in it; and its ultimate objective perception has not yet come to them
In the same manner people who were before their times had contradicted;
Therefore, to take a lesson, you the Messenger tell everyone to travel in land; "you see how was the conclusion/end result of the criminally guilty people." -
Just down the discourse repetitive analysis of the root's occurrence. I feel sent down/revealed is awfully exaggerated. That is all. How about just... given
Moreover, the fact remains that Our Majesty did give you the Messenger Seven distinctly elaborative Aa'ya'at Unitary Verbal Passages selected-excepted from the Binary-Symmetrical-analogous Miscellany.
Furthermore, it also remains a certain fact that We have given the Grand Qur'aan to you the Messenger . -
Yes, but your elevated messenger does no longer live here on Earth.
-
Yes, but your elevated messenger does no longer live here on Earth.
Thanks for ascribing him as elevated Messenger for me. I accept that he will be witness upon me. He will watch my deed-record-video before I am taken to the Court of Justice, Allah the Exalted, and will thus act as eye witness and defense lawyer for me.
Even if he was living in my life, his presence would have been of no avail to me if I were "dead".
Know it; We did not teach poetry to him the Messenger . Nor it is befitting that he should desire learn it for himself.
This is not poetry; it is but the Reminder-Admonisher-Revivalist; and it is Qur'aan characteristically explicit conveyor of information in succinct, individuated, distinct and crystallized manner.
The objective is that he the Messenger may alarm him who resembles a truly alive person.
And so that the Word is established for conviction upon those who willfully and persistently refuse to accept. However, the issue was "given" and "awefully exaggerated" sent down/revealed. The Ayah was quoted for your consideration.
-
You really associate partners with Allah quite manifestly. So Muhammad will act on your behalf...
Ah well... it is off-topic and it is not really worth discussing anyway. It is just so wrong.

I understand the reasoning but question whether it is the right thing to do. In terms of the example you gave, this child is locked out of inheritance rights etc. Sure, the father can quietly do whatever he wants for the child except make the child legal. Reminds me of Henry the VIII and the various dramas that played out regarding male children he wanted to legally make heirs. I don't think a system like that is...well, good is it? Interesting discussion though. One can understand today why four eye witnessess are required for establishing the charge of Zinna against a woman and man. If circumstantial or scientific evidence was allowed, today one man could have alleged Zina and could have asked for DNA or medical test to prove his allegation.
I would think the reasoning was making it tougher for false claims to do the rounds...? Why would a man or a woman opt for punishment though? Crisis of conscience? In which case, if one wants it to be known knowing the consequences why would someone make it difficult for them to confess? Not sure where you're going with this...If today we can use something that can prove the veracity of a rape claim or other claims, then why on earth would we not use it?Similarly one could naively ask when would I die. The answer could have brought him severe shock.
And you think that this answer would be mentioned in the quran? Or it would be external somehow? Not sure how the guy would've gotten the answer?People did ask questions that are quoted in Qur'aan. Questions are asked to get rid of doubts and uncertainities. So certain doubts and uncertainities should be let as they are veiled, may be disclosure becomes troublesome.
I can agree that we should know that there are limits to our knowledge and when to put down the brush from the canvas and all, but would such questions as you put forth as examples cause us to be rejectors?Just down the discourse repetitive analysis of the root's occurrence. I feel sent down/revealed is awfully exaggerated. That is all. How about just... given sun

That is over now, whatever was asked to the Messenger, or whatever was slandered in those days, it finds mention in Qur'aan.
Now the medical experts could predict about the death of an ailing patient. -
Salam alaikum.
?Revelation? is a bad word to be used for N-Z-L.
NZL means ?to make go down? as opposed to Ayn-Ra-Jeem ?to make go up?, or descend and ascend respectively
He knows all that enters the earth, and all that comes out of it, as well as all that descends(yanzilu) from the skies, and all that ascends(ya'ruju) to them. And He alone is a dispenser of grace, truly-forgiving. (342)
B-D-W, also mentioned in 5101 is the actual word that means ?reveal?. ?Reveal? as opposed to ?conceal?, like in
? and God knows all that you reveal(tubdoona), and all that you conceal. (599)
Verse 5101 is referring to a time when the Quran was being sent down. But now the complete Quran is with us, and so we can question all we want.

Thanks for the information, Fahad.
