Imraa' means woman, singular, it also means wife joined to the name in the possessive case.

There is the term ba3l to mean husband and bu3ulat for the plural, but there is no equivalent of that meaning wife or wives, so for the plural of wife is used the term spouses or mates, azwaj, which is the term used when speaking about the Prophet's wives.

As to the ma malakat aymanukum, or as translates "maintained by your oaths" they are a type of spouses, which differ from the common denomination concerning dower and may be other terms of marriage. But they are spouses all right when that is what is meant.

    Salaam

      Peace.

The words "Untha", "Imraat" and "Nissa" are all terms for women , used in Qoran as follows

1-"Untha" female gender mainly used for child/ren ( female gender) in Qoran.

2- "Imraat" singular mainly used for mature ( Woman, wife...) to give gender identity ,in equal terms with man identity.

3- " Nissa" Mature Women( plural) in society ( Married wives, mothers, sisters,Family groups...) To portrait the family community..etc.

The theme of Qoran is " Untha" for the gender, " Imraat" for the woman person that is equal to the man person, with her own character, right... and "Nissa" generally for women in the community/family...
There are other words like, "zawja", "Ajuz"...also used on occasions
      Hope that helps
      GOD bless you.
      Peace.

There are indeed many misconceptions about the Arabic found in the book called Quran. Misconceptions so grave words may seem to mean something they do not. Huruf is onto something in her post.

The perception of many words meaning "woman" in Arabic is very much an illusion.

            Greetings of Peace!

Nice to see your insightful replies. Glad to read all the varied responses.

Just to clarify my point, I am not praising the west, nor doubting the glorious message of the Holy Qur'an. I have only voiced my concern that though we have the perfect unedited message safe with us for the past millennium, our people have yet to come out of their closed mind-sets. Those amongst us who can, prefer to escape to the west and settle there. This is a fact, whether we like it or not.

One longs to see the tide turn some day, when the edisons and the einsteins, the david humes and the da vincis, the steve jobs and the stephen hawkins rise from the Muslim world. We still look back at the golden age of the Islamic civilization centuries back and for some reason find it difficult to get back on our feet today. It is not just the west, various other societies have grown at rapid pace too. The Japanese, Koreans and Chinese are marching forward with development at break-neck speed, none of whom are Islamic societies. The recent record set by a chinese company named 'Alibaba' as the world's largest IPO ever, is certainly an irony.

Perhaps we can summarise our passiveness in the growth of today's world as being the effect of becoming a community having no interest in the material goals and pleasures of this world. Perhaps our focus being only on the next life, we are unable to push our creative energies in any other direction. In the end, none of the bill gates and new technologies matter, because everything in life is just vanity right?

again the fact remains, those advanced and charitable nations that are supposedly following the message of the Quran are indeed following it without any help from the original Quran that we have. They are guided without it and seem to be prospering very much. In terms of exposed clothing and socially cold, well the Muslim labelled nations have the same problem- lack of freedoms for women and basic human rights issues; abuse of foreign workers in inhuman conditions while the local population lives in luxury...

These are points that many of us Muslims wish to sweep under the carpet... the fact that despite holding the book of God, we are not progressing in any way.. isn't that ironical?

The west is more educated than the Muslim world, so is Japan, India, China, Germany and some others.
Technological advancement is driven by knowledge thru education or in the case of we Muslims, the
lack of education has created ignorance and the inability to prosper on the world stage, we hold barbaric
and archaic views that foster alienation. On the other hand, piety is not owned by any one culture in particular
but is taught by various institutions through out the world to maintain an orderly society.

              God bless

                  I disagree with your summary..
Today's so-called "Islamic World" (Read Middle East World) have too much interest in material goals and pleasures of this world. And that's why there's so many conflict and hatred with today's Middle East World, it's all driven by GREED and PRIDE.

One among the root cause is the PRIDE and ARROGANCE of having "Superior culture / religion / sect and/or holy book above others" a.k.a Religion/Cultural FACISM.

Technological advancement is driven by knowledge thru education or in the case of we Muslims, the

                  +1 on the above,

I might add lack of education and critical thinking has created an ignorant society.
Adding pride to the mix, an ignorant and proud society in turn resulted in barbaric and violent behavior, leveraging religion / tradition as an excuse for their barbaric behavior.

The same pattern can be found elsewhere in the world, the european neo-nazis or american rednecks is another good example.

Egoistic nature of some with half baked knowledge about the world is the main reason for the problems in muslim world and also the power given to them by the silent muslim majority. Their idols do stop the muslims from undestanding the true form of God/Nature.
All messages brought forward by saints and prophets are peaceful, but cause issues when it takes the shape of a rigid form called RELIGION, esp current Islamic religion.

                      Dear Harris, Salam and peace,

                      1. here is a study about question 1, please read carrefuly this needs time and research
                        http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=6j39cpgjk936phh6sem9tu0dd7&topic=9604930.0

                      2. this is people choice (hatered and chaos in "pagano-muslim" world), to act and behave wrongly this is not Allah choice

                      3. "why is it that the Prophet of Islam had upto 9 wives at the same time?" Where did you get that, please quote from Al Quran.

                      Peace

So fact is the Prophet was married by god with one women.
"3337 And you said to the one who was blessed by God, and blessed by you Keep your wife and reverence God, and you hid inside yourself what God wished to proclaim. And you were concerned with the people, while God was more deserving that you be concerned with. So when Zayd ended his relationship with his wife, We had you marry her, to establish that there is no wrongdoing for the believers in marrying the wives of their adopted sons if their relationship is ended. And the command of God is always done. "

Second fact is that once he had two wifes if the first mentioned wife is under these two women we dont get to know.

"664 If the two of you repent to God, then your hearts have listened. But if you band together against him,
then God is his ally, and so are Gabriel and the righteous believers. Also, the angels are his helpers. "

Third fact is God stopped the amount of wifes at some point of time.

"3352 No women are lawful to you beyond this, nor that you change them for other wives, even though you may be attracted by their beauty, except what is maintained by your oath. And God is Watcher over all things. "

Another adding fact is that his wifes are living in seperate houses and some ladies do have daughters with the Prophet and Lady employees are in the house of the Prophet.

So fact is the Prophet had two wifes the number above is Maximum one .

Some verses are giving the Impression that the Prophet was leading a female soccerteam and because of the misleading scholars in the past who interpretated the famous 43 to be allowed marrying up to 4 wifes according to there wrong misconception the Prophet must have more than 4 so thats why there are these ahadith about 11 and more? women.

Si di, He had more than two wives, because the plural is used when espeaking about them. Plural in Arabic is above two, two is not plural but dual, it is different morphology and conjugation just as much as plural and singular are two different things.

Also to be born in mind is that there is not rule in the Qur'an that I can think or, correct me if I am wrong. that forces any man with several wives already to relinquish any of them, and that must also be the case with the prophet, in fact there is the prohibition for two sisters but with the caveat that what is already done need not be undone. That is logical.

So a lot of these things have to do with a situation that is in place and its modification, but not at the cost of harming people in rights and engagements which are in force and inwhich they have invested their lives or a lot of them. Social improvements are meant to cause benefits, not to cause prejudice.

                          Salaam

                            664" "

If you read further in 665 we can read that if the Prophet is going to divorce these two women from him God might giving him better spouses. But we don't read if the Prophet is divorcing them from the rest of his wifes or the Prophet shouldn't worry because he has still 9 good women left.

It is a hypotetical thing. The prophet is not divorcing anything, this a warning to the two of them and the sentence in 66.5 is equilly hypothetical. It says if He divorced you... this you is plural, so it is not speaking abut any two but in general for all of the wives. But the whole thing is hypothetical, a warning, and that means that it was revealed previous to the aya where the wives are given to choose whether to stay with the Prophet or to leave him. Those who stayed after that, he could not get divorced from them. He was not to divorce any of them he was not to exchange any of them, those were the mothers of believers and mothers stay mothers forever.

Who knows, may be those two preferred to leave him and were not included amongst the mothers of the believers, may be they did stay and deserved that denomination, we do not know. All we know is that those who stayed were worthy women who preferred God to anything else.

                              Salaam

I know that God is in control of all things and has wisdom far, far, far, beyond human understanding, so while
we give anecdotes as to why we Muslims are in the condition we are in, let us not forget our reality is part of God's
plan. What I mean by this is that maybe the rest of the world is better off because of our current malaise. Imagine
if we in our current mindset possessed nuclear capabilities besides the Pakistanis! Maybe the rest of the world
has benefited from our ignorant, less educated societies.

                                  Peace,

I know that God is in control of all things and has wisdom far, far, far, beyond human understanding, so while
we give anecdotes as to why we Muslims are in the condition we are in, let us not forget our reality is part of God's
plan. What I mean by this is that maybe the rest of the world is better off because of our current malaise. Imagine
if we in our current mindset possessed nuclear capabilities besides the Pakistanis! Maybe the rest of the world
has benefited from our ignorant, less educated societies.

                                  God bless

                                  peace

Good point Hawk.. Never thought about it... Certainly the peace and development of the modern world is much safer today with our Muslim brothers fighting each other, instead of focusing all their hatred and energies on the rest of the world...

But on the other hand, with ignorance comes the devil... with knowledge- our people might still be leading the world forward as we did during the dark ages. Only wisdom and understanding can remove people's hatred for each other... when mass-delusion is the order of the day, what hope have we?

                                    @huruf,
I agree with you, this is a subject which i not Crystal clear but let me say i don't think the Prophet had as much women as hadith are telling us.

I have read that the word zauj is also used in some countries for the number Two and the plural of it is used for even numbers and this word is always used for anything in pair or couple.

So the Prophet could probably had Two or 4 wifes cause i think above that god would use the plural of zauj.

So i stay with my opinion that the Prophet had only two wifes.

And i can leave you huruf to agree with you to disagree.peace.

No, si di. Azwaj is more than two.

I see thst the number of wives of the prophet seems to be a great problem for you and that somehow you want to reduce it because you do not agree that it would be right for him to have more. I think you will learn and may be change your views a lot as you live on. We all have done so.

But I assure you, in this csse, believe of course whatever you want, but be sure that I have no vested interest in wanting you to believe anything at all, but azwaj means he did have more than two.

You also must bear in mind aya 33.6 Where God says that the spouses of the prophet are mothers of the believers, that "mothers " in Arabic is also in the plural, it is more thabn two mothers. . That is, after whatever their number was, left the prophet when they were told to choose, what was left was more than two wives.

On the other hand let me ask you a question

?Why is that number so important for you? ?What does it make to us now that they were two or twenty? It made its sense when it happenned but that does not bind us to anything, not certainly to anything we consider wrong or improper.

                                      Salaam

I am also of the opinion that there is something fishy about the number of wives of the prophet, although I have not studied the phenomenon to any extent at the moment.

It would not surprise me if he had only one wife whereas the traditional interpretation and perception on Arabic grammar to be completely misunderstood.

Sure we have perfect unedited message safe, but the people who have given themselves the right to interpret them are corrupted bukhari followers. That's why jizia which is supposed to be war compensation is turned into a tax for non muslims. Verses about orphans were turned into a right for men to have multiple wives. Mainstream Islam today is what Christianity used to be couple of centuries ago. Say one word against mullah's outside and you will end up getting shot. They have replaced God with their own power. Maulana itself is a word that is divine and related to God. However, they chose this title for themselves and that's a pure blasphemy.

What all these people have in common is the help of the elite society that worships the satan. There is a big monopoly on power. You can easily get a Nobel prize provided you join them in their project. By the way, edison, einsteins and the others are all connected to the group that controls Muslim brotherhood also. Apparently, the founder of this brotherhood was a freemason.

Wrong, travel the world. UAE is far more technologically advanced than USA. They surely don't make the gadgets, but they take an interest in buying what is new. Bill Gates is just another pawn and his parents were rich anyways.

By the way, US does look like a progressive nation, but it has more to do with their urge to respect all ethnicities. Inventors now dont exist. Everything is made through teams and in those teams, Muslims work also. But this does not solve the problem of dumb Americans. We have tons of them here. 65 percent of Americans don't read a book after college graduation. Also its too easy to brainwash them. Thats why, they accept slavery thinking its freedom. I have also come across those who got A's in college all their lives but don't recognize simple geometric shapes. Some of these dummies still have the power to be Bill Gates just because of support from the elite.
