I have been denying the fact that Muslims are behind other nations by trying to justify their condition using colonization as an excuse. Lately, I have come to think that something is wrong with muslim mind. I need a better understanding on the reasons of muslim backwardness.

There are several factors. One is that they follow a text severely lacking in interpretation. Another is they are religious (Pagans), materialized view of their faith. They are superstitious. They do not follow 'The Ten Commandments'. They believe in lies.

The list can be made long and elaborate.

      Salaam

        Salam and Peace,

to answer your question we need to go back in History....

From Antiquity to middle age, The dark world...

So was Arabia, middle east, Persia, even in western europe which was already in christianity.
Christianity at that time was lead by obscurantism more than logical or enlightenment, even if now a day western countries propagate the idea that they inherited their scientific and political mind from Greece, so why were they backward in the 6th century?

        Then came down the Quran....

Initially The book came down to a nation who was pagan, illiterate, and the global environment was not so different as explained before, superstitions were the "normal" way of life.
It took some time for the "new" community to digest the teaching of this book. Yes since the beginning of Islam (and the same for other religions) political leaders understood the power of the religion! Easier to lead and control mass population.

After some generations and particularly under the Abbasid empire, science, philosophy, justice etc have been developed so strongly, why this change?

        The Quran and the books.....

Yes since the 8th century when Arabs discovered the paper after a battle with Chinese, the chines prisoners once back in Damascus explained the fabrication of the paper.
The Arabs improved the technic, and added metal in the ink to have a better quality, today it is still the same formula used for both (paper and ink).
Even though Chinese invented the paper, they never write a complete book, their writings was more shaped for labels and scrolls.

        Guess what happened next?
Now Arabs discovered the paper, they had a book which invite them to think and ponder...They write the first book ever!!! The Great Reading, The Quran is the first book put in paper and binding book shape.

You will say, but Egyptian had the papyrus, Mesopotamian had the tablets etc... Yes so what, try to write a book on papyrus or on tablets and try to disseminate it!!! You would need a carriage with 4 horses to move a book, and for papyrus you can only have it in scrolls, a 200 pages book would measure 27m long!!!!!!!!

This invention, was one of the biggest invention in the world, people could now start educate themselves, in medecine, mathematics, astronomy, etc...
Between the 6th and the 14th century MUSLIM world (Persian, Berbers, Mesopotamians, Assyrians, Indonesians, Asians, Africans etc etc including Jewish and Christians) invented

        • modern medecine and pharmaceutic (surgery, anesthesia, ophthalmology etc etc..)
        • mathematics (algebra, logarithm, trigonometry, the zero and the decimals)
        • astronomy
        • physics
        • chemistry
          etc etc etc

        OH Nice, so what happened???
Under the Ottoman empire, the sultan Selim 2 (if I remember well) prohibited the production of books by death penalty, while in western europe, the printing and translation of arabic books were of millions copy even if a minority could read!!!!!!!
This was and is the key for muslim downgrade.
Even today Israel publish more books than the entire arab countries!!!!

It took no more than 2 or 3 generations to counter balance the advanced degree of Muslims vs the western world.

        Industrial revolution......
When Muslims invented mathematics, it was to help to create time table for prayers, astronomy was to identify Ramadan easily, etc etc.... Let's say the goals were to make muslim life easier and it was in a "humanistic" way or in other word it was a noble cause, even if it helped them conquer some countries...

So did Christopher Colombus with the help of muslim navigation tools e.g. compass, sextant, maps...

While in western countries, after middle age, it took them 2 or 3 centuries (from 15th to 18th) to have the big start, put the religion aside and start understanding the muslim scientific books.
Westerners appropriate the knowledge and put greek name on all discoveries!!!
e.g. Thales, Pythagore etc etc (how could they invent formula without having even the numbers and decimals???)

In western countries when new Engineers understood the science they understood quickly they could make money from it e.g. Ford, Edison (General Electric) far from Quranic teachings isn't it?

Remember in the muslim world, to become a scientist you would first learn the Quran entirely, then start learning science, the learning of the book was a basic requirement in all schools!!!

        does it answer your question?

        Peace

Mostly what Man of Faith said, with the addition since the abolition of Ottoman Empire was also the abolition of good Muslim reputation and advancement in politics, sciences and many other things - we were, by Western standards, secular without even being it! This was true Islam Muslims followed at these time, we were all one community. Women had equal rights to men - in fact, women back then didn't even wear bags over their heads!

It was around this time that when the Ottoman Empire abolished, "conservatism" (I use the word "radical," "fundamentalist" very loosely when referring to violent "Muslims" because it is not in the fundamentals of Islam to be violent, it's in fact the opposite, they are not even Muslims - they should be called for Wahhabis) and an intolerant, "radical," Wahabbi religious cult was founded in the name of Islam. This was due to the fact that other countries in the Middle East doesn't have a peaceful figure like Mustafa Kemal Ataturk to save them from the greedy, prideful dictators only seeking for power.

This cult grew significant in growth after Ottoman Empire because the Saudi dictators conquered Arabia in 1932 and established Wahabism as its state religion and would oppress the people who rebelled against them, generations afterwards, the citizens have grown up in the environments and have learned to accept this cult since its their birth religion, the ideology they have been brainwashed with and the propaganda that they have heard, it's what made them intolerantly backward - also if you rebelled against them now, you will be killed if you disagreed with such a cult.

Thus, 28 million Muslims from that country alone have been "radicalized" and are backwards. Let's hope the new king will reform the country and forsake the cult.

When the Ottoman Empire abolished, the British forces occupied Palestine, after the Second World War - the Zionist Jews made the excuse to occupy the country from the Britons due to their "oppression" from European countries during the war, which I honestly find ludicrous since every citizen of those times of any non-Scandinavian ethnicity was being severely oppressed and the Jews were no more significant or different. The British forces accepted their excuse and Israel was established in 1948, many Arabs saw it as a great loss of Arab land and went to war with them, the Arabs lost and since then has been bad losers and created a strong hatred against the Jews by stigmatizing them and killing their people, Israel responded in the same way - but they are being blamed for it.

Now, that's the excuse of much antisemitism, also a part of the backwardness, in Middle East, the Palestinians today are born in an poor environment with very rich neighbors - they find this unfair and get educated in antisemitism at a very young age, in order to wage war against them.

Syria, Iraq, Libya and other of the fellow Middle Eastern - North African countries where once lead by European countries, such as France. But after they chose to let them have their own leaders and unaffiliate themselves from them, the leaders had still not an established government - they were then overtaken by dictators by, perhaps, a coup - for example Gaddafi took over Libya after only 8 years where it was standing on its own lead by their first and only King, Idris. These dictators didn't wish democracy and affiliated them with their ideology and incorporated it in their religion, after the next generation where none have done anything due to weakness, you accept it as it is and your children live and grow up with the repulsive ideology.

Other African countries are just so poor that they don't know better and learn from hearsay people and accept it as facts of life.

Pakistan was founded relatively recent and has an overpopulation, is poor, after it was affected by Arabic terror groups, the Pakistanis became intolerant, too. Albeit, the government is a democracy, it's unable to control its citizens and is struggling fighting against Taliban.

Iran was a very liberal country, in 1979, it was overtaken by a revolution of a man who claimed to be righteous, the Iranians were gullible and supported him until he was elected, it became known that he was a bigoted conservative whose only intentions were power and halting the society. They were then utterly oppressed and nothing could be done after Khomeini came to the power. A generation after, the new coming Iranians live in the environment and really don't know better.

We still have India, Indonesia and other Eastern to Southeast Asian countries that are Muslims that weren't affected like the Middle Eastern countries, following Islam in a just and right way.

But this is the reason for the backwardness of Middle Eastern, African Muslims, they inherit the violent ideologies and those ideologies are incorporated with a "because it's in the Islam and Sunnah of the Prophet, you must accept it as a true Muslim," which ignorant people can't argue against and usually lose the battle.

Blame the West for the abolition of the Ottoman Empire and their unjust nonsupport for the Arab countries, once in their occupation, that have since become into these backward, scum holes that they are now.

            Peace Mussabahire.

I agree with herbman. Qoran was the reason then and Qoran is the reason now!!!!!

            Look at this

You shall hold fast to the rope of God, all of you, and do not be divided. Recall God's blessings upon you - you used to be enemies and He reconciled your hearts. By His grace, you became brethren. You were at the brink of a pit of fire, and He saved you therefrom. God thus explains His revelations for you, that you may be guided.

Now the Muslims are back at the brink of a pit of fire again, why?

Followers of Qoran alone are expected to be united, speaking one language - the language of guidance - and acting according to the only one valid source of laws. ( Like once upon a time!!!)
We cannot make Qoran-based decisions if we are not fully knowledgeable of all the divine details mentioned throughout the 114 chapters of this infallible, fully detailed, Arabic Qoran.
We cannot have one voice, one choice and one action if we fail to encompass the entire context of Qoran and grasp all the tiny details of every single issue in this amazing book.

Selectivity and partial obedience ,following other sources and authorities like sheep means nothing and leads to nothing but confusion, divisions and weakness. Ultimately, our voice of the truth would fade out- we become unworthy of it.

That is what happened to the Muslims, The downfall was certain in this case..

Our knowledge of Qoran is one of the guards we have against ignorance and confusion .
When we are well-educated and truly knowledgeable of God's detailed teachings and commands in Qoran, we're less likely to fall backwards .
Ignorance, on the other hand, is the real disability of the followers. It renders them as easy targets for the so called Leaders,Scholars.... Ignorance is the one common trait among those going backwards.

The majority of Muslims today do not study/ponder Qoran or do they?!!!

            GOD bless you.
            Peace.

              Peace herbman,

Selim III (1761-180 actually tried reform eliminated as result.

The Quarterly Review, Volume 41 European Turkey page 475

This weak but well-disposed man, desirous of gradually introducing the arts and sciences of western Europe, commenced by the establishment of a printing-press and a paper manufactory. For the use of the latter, he gave up an imperial kiosk, a summer residence of the sultans; and the printing-office was at Scutari. An attempt of the same kind had been made by Achmet III (Ahmed III 1673 ? 1736), so early as the year 1727; the ollemas gave their consent, but it was rendered nugatory, by excepting the Koran, for a reason, as Mr. Walsh observes, ?characteristic of the people ? they said it would be an act of impiety if the word of God should be squeezed and pressed together; but the true cause was, that great numbers of themselves earned a considerable income by transcribing those books, which would be at once destroyed, if suffered to be printed.? As Turks read nothing else but the Koran, the printing-office was soon discontinued. Its renewal by Selim had no better success; it languished and declined on the death of its patron, who fell a victim to the rage of the Janissaries, for attempting to innovate upon their ancient and venerable ignorance.?

853 such because the god not it be changes grace which bestowed it on folk until change they of what in souls theirs/themselves and that the god hearer knower

                  Peace all,

In Quran, "muslimeen" are contrasted with "mujrimeen"

                  6835 Should we treat/make peacemakers/"al-muslimeen" like criminals/"al-mujrimeen"?

The opposite of peacemaker/"muslim" is not a disbeliever. The opposite of peacemaker/"muslim" is a criminal/"mujrim".

The word "muslim" (small m, common noun, as used in Quran) means someone who makes peace, or a peacemaker, or someone who is not a criminal, and it has nothing to do with any religion or belief system or following Quran (example Abraham).

A "muslim"/peacemaker can NEVER be backward because he/she will be a peacemaker and not a criminal, and the reason people are backward is because they are criminals and cause corruption and bloodshed. It is analogous to saying "why is an intelligent person stupid?". An intelligent person can never be stupid.

On the other hand, a Muslim (capital M, proper name, follower of a fabricated man made religion, never used in Quran) can be backward if he/she is not a "muslim"/peacemaker and is a criminal instead and causes corruption and bloodshed.

The reason Muslims are backward is because they are not "muslim" and instead they have become "mujrim".

May the infinite Creator guide us to the truth.

I have been denying the fact that Muslims are behind other nations by trying to justify their condition using colonization as an excuse. Lately, I have come to think that something is wrong with muslim mind. I need a better understanding on the reasons of muslim backwardness.

                    All religious people are backward...
Those who doesn't have critical mind, those who doesn't have creative mind.
Those who are too lazy to think for themselves and delegate the task of thinking to other people and just 'follow'...
Those who are afraid to speak out their mind when they find something wrong...
Those who are close minded and cannot accept new ideas..

And it's not only applicable to Muslim (The member of a religion named Islam), it also applicable to Judaist, Christianist etc..
Look at the current "rednecks" population in US, they are very religious and they are backward..

After some generations and particularly under the Abbasid empire, science, philosophy, justice etc have been developed so strongly, why this change?

                    The Quran and the books.....

Very simple, the characteristic of the society within Abbasid Empire were

                    1. Egalitarian
                    2. Open Minded and Innovative (many of the so called inventions was a 'modified' / 'improved' ideas from other culture)
                    3. Critical, debate and discussion is heavily encouraged..

"The Persians ruled for a thousand years and did not need us Arabs even for a day. We have been ruling them for one or two centuries and cannot do without them for an hour"
-- Harun Al Rashid (8th century Sultan)

"If the people of this religion are asked about the proof for the soundness of their religion, they flare up, get angry and spill the blood of whoever confronts them with this question. They forbid rational speculation, and strive to kill their adversaries. This is why truth became thoroughly silenced and concealed."

"You claim that the evidentiary miracle is present and available, namely, the Koran. You say "Whoever denies it, let him produce a similar one." Indeed, we shall produce a thousand similar, from the works of rhetoricians, eloquent speakers and valiant poets, which are more appropriately phrased and state the issues more succinctly. They convey the meaning better and their rhymed prose is in better meter. ? By God what you say astonishes us! You are talking about a work which recounts ancient myths, and which at the same time is full of contradictions and does not contain any useful information or explanation. Then you say "Produce something like it""
-- Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi (9th century scholar)

And nobody assassinated or give a death threat to Razi..

Now Arabs discovered the paper, they had a book which invite them to think and ponder...They write the first book ever!!! The Great Reading, The Quran is the first book put in paper and binding book shape.

Many mistake on your citation above..
Lao Tse wrote Tao The Ching in a 'book' format in 6th century BC, 1400 years before the Abbassid era..
Sun Tzu wrote "Art Of War" (Sunzi Bingfa) in a 'book' format in 5th century BC, 1300 years before the Abbassid era.

Both book contains so many 'truth' that it still often cited and act as a reference up until today..
Without any 'religion' / 'superstition' being formed around the books, or enforcement to believe in those books and neither of the author claim that it was 'written by the God/Gods"..

Between the 6th and the 14th century MUSLIM world (Persian, Berbers, Mesopotamians, Assyrians, Indonesians, Asians, Africans etc etc including Jewish and Christians) invented

Again a mistake, the Indonesians and Asians (read Malaysia, Bangladesh India and today's Pakistan) during 14th century was a "Hindu/Buddhist" world.. They did made many great invention and achievement during that era.

As I mentioned above many of the so-called "Muslim" invention was a borrowed idea from other culture / civilization.. Math from India/Pakistan, Paper and Ink from China, Astronomy and Engineering from Persia/Assyria etc..

After the total obliteration of the "Caliphate" by the Turk/Mongols... and then the adoption of Islam by the Turk/Mongols, the religion of Islam was being expanded by the Turkic/Mongol Sultan towards India/Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia.. mostly through conquest.. The people was forced or heavily pressured to convert from Hinduism/Buddhism to the Turkic/Mongolian conqueror's religion of Islam.

And that happened only recently... 17th century above..

I never considered India, Bangladesh and Indonesia as "Islamic country".. because they're secular.. up until today..
And by the end of this century you (or your children) will witness the rise of India and Indonesia to it's former glory..

Pakistan and Iran/Persia was a secular country up until mid of 20th century..

                    Salam / Peace

Thanks for filling in, brother Jafar.

Edit And I could be as bold as to say most people of those who call themselves muslim do not even know what the word means.

A few say peacemaker which is in the right direction, but it is as general as to be sound, in body and soul but mostly soul which is the real you. In relationship to God (aslama l'Rabb) it refers to be firm towards the Rabb, as be a sound person without flaws, but the connotation as to be firm to someone is also that you can be reliable. So one mental image is faithfulness towards the Rabb of the intricate meaning of 'aslama l'Rabb'.

Those you refer to as backwards are not muslim but only self-proclaimed ones who do not even know what the attribute implies.

The term Muslim could be considered fairly equal in meaning to "Believer", a person with faith/spirit. Believer is an incredibly awkward and inaccurate word but is the only one-word noun to use that I know of in English. I call myself Man of Faith due to this reason partially. I humorously thought of "Faithling" once, but I discarded that.

                      Salaam

Not encouraging personal freedom, wrong laws in the name of Sharia not understanding natural laws embedded within nature and so should change with the environment one lives in.

Muslims are not allowed to change by their idol worshiping religious leaders as how Prophet changed shattering superstitious beliefs of his time. In short they do not have good understanding/relationship with God(infact become non muslims).

moreover I think the lack of Technology or wealth do not define backwardness, Its the happiness/peace factor I will consider the most that tells if a community or individual is blessed with.

There are different types of knowledge and wisdom, abstract and concrete. The abstract one requires no formal education but one can work that out themselves in their mind. The knowledge bound to this illusion of solidity is worth little at the end of days.

Intelligence is thus not necessarily bound to knowledge but one can know less than another but still be more intelligent. That is true for a person who has entered into the realm of Allah. A better soul depth widens one's perception and just able to use the mind for thinking requires little knowledge. And to know good from wrong requires little knowledge.

                                Salaam

Definitely, that's why somebody came up with "Happiness Index".. to measure "well being"..
                                  http//www.happyplanetindex.org/

Although technology and wealth does have a positive contribution to happiness..
Yet overuse of technology which causes pollution (for example) shall have a negative contribution to general well being and happiness..

To me "backwardness" is a mental state.. it is the opposite of "Progressive"...
Backward community is not a happy community.. they are full of hatred / resentment toward others, they're not satisfied, feeling their well being and needs are not being met. And instead of positive outlook and came out with innovative and positive idea on how to overcome their problem they resorted to how to make others feel as bad as they are... how to make others suffer as they are.. they're happy if they can put some suffering to others..

To make matter worse, they're proud and will not accept any new idea or solution that is coming from outside of their circle/tradition/religion, instead they labeled those new idea as 'dangerous'...
Such social environment shall not create a peaceful environment.

Basically it's the attitude of the character named "Iblees" in the Quran.. Proud, Envious, Angry, Bitter, Jealous, Full of Hate and try to make others suffer as he is..

Thank you Jafar for your great explanation. I appreciate your words.

Thank you Jafar. This is what I personally face from several of the Muslims in my community. Basically many of them are ruled through fear. And they think by being innovative and taking matters in their own hands to cure their troubles and oppression, they may actually end up invoking the curse of Allah and hence potentially lose their Akhirah.

As for the usual parroted sayings of Muslims that following the Quran would make them enlightened, um, if it is the currently accepted translation of the Quran, it definitely isn't so. Unless we cherry-pick some of the good verses of the Quran, which I agree by themselves they are very enlightening to a number of us.

In the Quran among the negative things there are things like misogyny (such as half inheritance, half testimony for financial cases, polygamy, men being one degree above women, etc), racism (997), calling a set of people impure for their beliefs (92, unscientific statements (e.g 2133, 1679), violent punishments (e.g 533, 242), excess emphasis on punishment of Hell-fire and excess emphasis on "believing". I don't see how reading such verses should propel Muslims to advance their country and actually be just instead of trying to scurry and believe and follow religious rules and rituals in order to please such a God just to avoid the horrendous description of the Hell, and think the negative results due to following some of the Qurans ruling are due to test from their God and hence they have to bear the oppression in order to get to Jannah. This mindset is all too common one among the Muslims I am with at least. The combination with Hadith makes it worse.

The fact is I have seen the people who are the most beneficial and progressive in a community are the ones who are less fear-based and less superstitious in general. I find it sort of impossible that the one who literally takes in all of the Quran as we know of today would not live in fear and hence be less productive as a person due to such an influence. Such people also end up having an effect on other people based on their own fears and superstitions.

The equality talked between men and women in the Quran is mainly in terms of how they are to God. That's hardly beneficial for people in the world who would want to know how men and women are equal on this planet.

Several of the most progressive, peaceful and less corrupted countries in the world are non-Muslim ones. They know nothing about the Quran in general nor care to find out. Maybe that should tell us that it could be due to following MORE of Islam as we know of today, the Muslim mindsets are the way they are today.

                                      Peace,

                                      Samira

Sometimes we need to think before we make a general comment like yours here

What have you based this on? People you know?

Are you sure all of them are the way you described?

I can only speak for myself, I have not influenced my wife who is still a Unitarian Christian and strong at that. Nor have I influenced my son who after qualifying as a Doctor last year, decided to keep searching and pondering ,then make up his own mind. Nor have I influenced my elder daughter who is running a big company and has no time ( as she puts it) for study /religion... Nor have I influenced my youngest daughter who, by herself decided to study with me once a week...But retains her freedom and confidence , she has the freedom to choose like everyone else. Everybody has the freedom to choose.

I hope to converse with you ,sometimes in the future , if you ever realise what a treasure Qoran is. What wisdom, what message.

But never mind for now. You are entitled to your views and opinion.
                                        GOD bless you.
