    LOL!

Not that open minded, some here are pushing Flat Earth, so wouldn't work with a Flat Earth where the actual Moon is in fact a prism, and the Sun a lamp )
    Anything else?

Now seriously, there are two interpretations being pushed

    1. the first full moon after the winter solstice

    2. the first full moon after the summer solstice

each argue their case within this forum,

me I chose 2. and the first full moon will be 2nd of July, so I will fast 3 days 2, 3 and 4th of July, could complete it to the requisite 10 days, but too hard for me because of a health condition.

Of course 1. is easier in winter, days being shorter, but it didn't convince me.

Another approach would be to fast both, still shorter than the full Ramadan one month which shifts by 10 days backwards every year

Have a nice (alternative non hadithist) exploration of Quran.

    Salam

    Nabil

As for me, I started fasting June 1st, will cover the standard Ramadan practiced by the majority, and will also do this solstice thing with Nabil probably. All the while I'll be exercising extensively throughout the day to keep my metabolism going since I don't want it to stagnate and cause a weight gain but this is just particular to my situation, since I joined the YMCA June 1st and started fasting too.

So I fast the Gregorian Month, the Muslim Month, and the Solstice? lol Solstice I just threw in because of Nabil the Nabster but I usually end up fasting longer than the Ramadan term anyway.

I believe fasting is a term of one month (28 or 30 days whatever you prefer, I'd do the longer if possible) at the time of Ramadan which perhaps is the Hottest Month or the 9th Month of the Islamic Calendar (and I think it is fine to go along with the rest of the Muslims on it) and can be done at any other time as well as the Qur'an seems to indicate, and is abstaining from food and drink during the hours of the light.

I didn't start July 1st out of doubt necessarily, but just to do extra and get into the groove or routine before the mainstream Ramadan begins, and I like doing extra things anyway, check out my other posts in the Trash too if you would like to learn more of my practices! You can also email me at [email protected], bye!

But the guy just asked which known Gregorian month was in existence when Qur'an was reveled?
Was it July or November when it was Ramadan for Muhammad and when the revelation of the Qur'an started?

I can't remember where I read this, the first fully fasted Ramadan by Muhammad (P) was claimed to be in the beginning of Summer.

Since the Gregorian calendar was in vogue when Muhammad existed, it would be quite possible to calculate exactly which month corresponds with Ramadan, or at least the first month of the Muslim calendar which started after Hijra, wouldn't it?

            Thank you

The Gregorian Calendar shifts, particularly over centuries and stuff, so it might not be that easy, plus one would have to rely on the Hadith accounts

Muslim accounts say it began in the year 610.

"According to traditional Islamic beliefs, the Quranic revelation started one night during the month of Ramadan in 610 AD, when Muhammad, who was forty years old, received the first revelation from the angel Gabriel, who had given him the responsibility for inscribing these messages from God to give to mankind."

Its called BH and is considered 12 BH or something in the Islamic Calendar.

"October 4 ? Heraclius arrives with a fleet from Africa at Constantinople. Assisted by an uprising in the capital, he overthrows and personally beheads emperor Phocas. Heraclius gains the throne with help from his father Heraclius the Elder. His first major act is to change the official language of the Eastern Roman Empire from Latin to Greek (already the language of the vast majority of the population). Because of this, after AD 610 the Empire is customarily referred to as the Byzantine Empire (the term Byzantine is a modern term invented by historians in the 18th century; the people of the Empire itself always referred to themselves as "" ? in English, Romious)."

              http//habibur.com

              "Alice,
              Just had an 'obviously' moment...
The first revelation occurred in Ramadan in the year 610 CE. There are 4 known dates that this could have occurred which are 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th Ramadan. These dates are known as the Night of Power or the Night of Destiny and is when the Quran was revealed, and this is where I would say, the first revelation took place.
              These dates correspond to;
              23 Ramadan 610 = August 20 610
              25 Ramadan 610 = August 22 610
              27 Ramadan 610 = August 24 610
              29 Ramadan 610 = August 26 610
Also, it is worth noting that the night of August 19 610 before midnight (e.g. 1800 - 2359, Aug 19 610) in Western terms is normally classed as the night of August 20 610 in Islamic/Eastern terms.
              Maz"

"I would go with one of the 4 dates mentioned earlier for the birth of Islam (until I am presented with reputable evidence to suggest otherwise) and I agree with July 16 622 (1/1/1 AH) as being the start of the Islamic Era. I think the website mentions Sep 24 622!
              Maz"

              "Zarathu,
I think you are quite right in what you say. There are many sources and one of the main problems is the ineffective recording of dates. Only the approximate year was recorded and also things like, "about 3 or 4 years after such and such" were also common.
I have also spoken to a few scholars and students of Islamic studies during the day and they are of the opinion that Islam can be assumed to have started when the Quran was revealed. This occurred on 21 or 23 or 25 or 27 or 29 Ramadan, 610. That is, another date to the one I added in an earlier post. Although the exact date was known by Muhammad, in one of his "speeches", he did not give the date but told Muslims to pay heed to the last 5 odd-numbered days of Ramadan which are all followed 'religiously' each Ramadan. He also thinks that these 5 dates are irrespective of the sect of Islam that is followed.
Again, I think you are quite right with the start or foundation of Christianity. I have looked at Campion's book where he does have a section on Jesus and the Christian calendar, the Christian calendar as 6pm, 31st Dec, 1BC (or 0000, 1st Jan, 1AD) and the start of the Muslim era as starting 6pm 16 July 622 but also mentions that Muhammad in fact arrived in Medina, 2nd July 622.
              Maz"

"Muhammed had his first revelation on the night of August 10th 0610. The actual time is not given and was probably never recorded. I have chosen 10.00 pm because of Pluto conjunct antiVertex and Mars on IC. I have found that almost anything to do with angels has a strong Mars or Pluto component, there doesn't seem to be anything gentle about them. It also seems to me that religions started by angels always involve the suppression of women, are often violent and warlike and insist on the worship of a single god.
Thank you for your help and research
              Alice McDermott"

"Also, your mention of "The Muslim dates are in the Islamic calendar extended back in time. The Western dates are in the Julian calendar. The Hijra is celebrated annually on 8 Rabi' I, about 66 days after 1 Muharram, the first day of the Muslim year. Many writers confuse the first day of the year of the Hijra with the Hijra itself, erroneously stating that the Hijra occurred on 1 Muharram AH 1 or 16 July 622" are important and have really prompted me to do some more fact-finding on the 'Hegira - calendar start' scenario. I have spent much time on determining and creating an Islamic timeline for this period and looking back at my notes because of this post, I have in fact noticed a discrepancy of about 87 days or so which I couldn't account for. Nice....
              Maz"

"Muhummad died on th 8th June 0632. I thought I would progress and direct the possible charts for Islam to that date to see if any showed the death of the leader."

                  Peace,

Making Fasting at a specific period came enforced in Madinah, much later than the first revelation, and after the famous verses on fasting got revealed, Muhammad is reported to have fasted 9 official Ramadans.

Hi guys, new to the forum. Good to see some healthy thinking folks up in here. Had a question, does anyone know which Gregorian month corresponds with the Islamic month of the original ramadan, the original first ramadan month in which the Quran was revealed.

                        Salaam Cilvaringz

Qur'an was revealed in a night not in a month as per 971
                        &#65279
We have sent it (the Qur?an) down in the Night of Qadr.

It was made public by Muhammad after the night of its revelation in his remaining lifetime.

There was no month named Ramadan among Arabs of that time.

                        Please reflect.

I am in flux at the moment about what Ramadan means, between the ijtihads of Rashid Khalifah, then @Layth, @Ayman and now @shirk...

Just now, I tend to believe it is a marker for the beginning of a period, at which it is asked to fast from 3 to 10 days, and Allah knows best what it means.

Also the marker, can also be the period itself.

For me the safest bet is to do more than less, to at least match if not exceed the standards of the mainstream, so at the very least in my opinion its a lunar month and I don't think its harmful to do it along with the other Muslims. I think the Muslims have been doing it for a month for a very long time, even if it started to be practiced like that 100 years after the death of Muhammed or something.

I've been fasting since I was a little child, most Muslims do a full month I think with not eating and drinking from before sunrise to after sunset and they usually eat in the early morning and evening, but I don't even eat in the morning and I eat one meal.

It has never been difficult for me, and I generally live like that anyway, though it isn't good for the metabolism really so its better and healthier to exercise and eat small meals throughout the day (when not fasting of course).

I don't have an issue getting hypoglycemic or anything and have practiced going without food for long periods of time, going without bathroom for long periods of time and other things, but ever since I was a little child I was doing it and I've always been disciplined and having great willpower.

Also, I've never been that desirous of food or craving it like crazy so it isn't hard to abstain from it or most things.

Because fasting is not a challenge really, I take the opportunity to really think about things related to deprivation. I was empathizing with this bum I was watching the tv with earlier today and the commercials seemed so inane and ridiculous from the perspective of a bum (like I was imagining how a bum might see these things, and they were so silly seeming, things I could never have and didn't even care about, a woman punching a person in a sandwich outfit, talking about expensive insoles for shoes, all kinds of consumerist stuff).

So yeah, 30 days seems a nice amount of time to get a taste of what it is like to be a starving vagabond deprived of anything in the world, especially when the fasts are so many hours long in the north lands.

Often they are in a condition similar to those fasting, because there is food all around them but they don't have the money to buy it and have to wait.

It reminds us of so many things we can be grateful for, even though they are not that great and the overall story is unpleasant, but how we have been particularly spared and blessed as compared to even more difficult stories like having no money, being disabled somehow, all these difficulties, fasting I think can be used to help practice and enhance compassion as well.
