      105 He is the One who has made the sun a radiance, and the moon a light, and He has measured its phases; [that you may know the number of the years and the count. God has not created this except with the truth. He clarifies the revelations for a people who know.

      1712 And We made the night and the day as two signs, so We erased the sign of night and We made the sign of day to see in, that you may seek bounty from your Lord, and that you may know the number of the years and the count. And everything We have detailed completely.

        How can we apply a calendar in space, no days no nights no sun and no moon - as there are so, so many..........and in some places on earth the day may be six months long what happens there !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Doubt if there was a calender in the quran peace

          Thanks, but how can we operate a luni-solar calendar without intercalation which Qur'an 936, 37 seemingly forbid?

            How can we apply a calendar in space, no days no nights no sun and no moon - as there are so, so many..........and in some places on earth the day may be six months long what happens there !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Doubt if there was a calender in the quran peace

            1. Our calendar is based on our home, Earth. No need to invent calendars in space, as we don't live in space. If we leave Earth, then no need to keep track of seasons, and if we'd ever be so advanced as to leave Earth into space, then we'd also be able to keep track of time through technology like we do today.

            2. The day is never six months long on Earth. That which people call six months long day and six months long night is just a poetic way of describing the amount of day light hours. The sun still peaks and has a low. Moon has it's normal cycles, just like the stars. On Earth, there is no place which has a bigger problem measuring time or seasons than any other place.

            So no worries.

                The people at Yahoo Answers weren't very informed.

                In any case, when we say 6 months night and 6 months day, it gives the wrong impression in at least two different ways.

                First it sounds like you have no daylight at all for six months (like a dark starry night), and then normal daylight for six months. This is not the case. Even when the sun doesn't rise above the horizon for weeks during winter, there is still the light of dawn/dusk.
                Secondly, it sounds like there would be a drastic shift between night and day after every six months. Obviously this is not the case. The light doesn't suddenly switch off from summer to winter. There is naturally a gradual increase or decrease over the year of the amount of hour of sun above vs below the horizon.

                Also, despite that the sun doesn't set for some time during the summer, and doesn't rise above the horizon during winters, one can still observe the cyclic shifts of night and day. During summers, the sun oscillates on the sky, and during winters the light of the sky comes and goes. So the means for keeping track of days are still there.

                  A. Lunar
                  B. Luni-Solar
                  C. Solar

                  Please, give reasons for your choice and try to elaborate. It would help more than vague, dead end replies.

                  For all my life, i have considered it Lunar but am beginning to reconsider. The Lunar calendar doesn't keep track of season and is unreliable for marking historical events. The Luni-Solar calendar overcomes this by intercalation but doesn't Qur'an 937 forbid intercalation?

                  Your contribution will be highly appreciated.

                  Calendaring system was made to serve certain purpose..
                  Thus I don't believe that there is such thing as "Truest Calendaring System"..

                  Solar based calendar is great for agricultural society, as it correctly mark the time of the season (Planting season, Harvesting season etc..)

                  Lunar based calendar is great for hmm... I don't know any activities which are dependent on the cycle of the moon.. ))

                  The question is similar to How should a COMPUTER apply a calendar?
                  Given it cannot see any days or nights or sun or moon.
                  Well the answer is It marks the time by how many milliseconds has passed since certain point (epoch) in time.
                  And the epoch time is January 1, 1900.

                  Thanks to the above 'calendaring system' we can discuss with each others here on this internet forum..

                  Thus in Space, the calendaring system will work in the same manner as the calendaring system used by the computer. How many milliseconds since certain point in time.

                    What is forbidden is the use of the intercalary month every other year (which is what the people were doing to circumvent God's restrictions). The proper use of the intercalary is to insert it every 3rd year only.

                      Days around Dec 22 and June 22 are interesting as the north/ and south pole areas don't get any sunlight at all or get sunlight all the time , as the earths axis is tilted please see the diagram, Thanks.
