Is gambling really haram?
-
Gambling is bad because it stimulates the body's instinct. In fact, even games in which you play against opponents activates the instinct and could therefore be recommended to be avoided. It is hence not recommended with games.
Alcohol is bad because it is harmful to the body's functionality and it is prone to cause addiction. It is good to abstain from all stimulants, even coffee and tea. The body was designed to run without those. The body was designed to run on what gives nutrition and water. Alcohol is not recommended.
Both are factors that make a person oblivious of who they are and lost to the world. The more you stimulate various sides of the instincts, the more this will preoccupy your mind and you will chase after vanity (things that have no real meaning but is lowly excitement of a primitive body).
But for the one who likes this world they can ignore the above and do these things that the instinct calls for.
Be well

They way i've read quran it's alcohol and gambling together that's haram. Never on their own!

Together they are toxic for the wealth. I know someone who won a car of a drunk man during gambling. I hope you get the point. Alcohol is not completely haram, for it can be sometimes good for health. But again, even doctors say moderation is better especially red wine because it keeps the heart good. Not alcoholic drinks are good. Quality and ingredients matter. I hate alcohol though. I can't stand hangover and the after-drinking odor in the body and hair.

about intoxicants people just used it to make their mind relax, some of them slow down the mind some of them make it appear in a transe, basically a hidden thing/ingredients cover ur mind that will give u a state of mind which everybody want.
but again if somebody want his mind relax what should he consume if not by intoxicants, smoking tea weed marijuana all these things are performing function out of randam functions, redbull as well it gives u energy so that u can awake ,,
about gambling its a waste of money and cause trouble, and leads you towards robbery, give u headache when u loose, keep u awake thinking how to chase the money back, and most of the times u loose, in case of family person , its more risky if he lose his money in gambling how he will gona feed them,
whatever trick we play with words and interpretation of quran , wrong cannot b right,
lie is haram/prohibited.
dishonesty is haram/prohibted
illegal sex is haram/prohibited.but all these things are also not mention in haram list so can we do it..
but we just want to see label if its not mention in the catagory of haram then its permissible, obviously its not permissible.
my frd father killed his whole family while he was drunk.
my uncles become strange persons when they drunk..even i experienced both of these things and i find them curse, trust me plz dnt trick with words i already get a lesson from my end,, i conisider them not haram,, but not a favorable thing though

Greetings and Peace, all group
I'm not sure that gambling is haram.
344 This is from the news of the unseen that We inspire to you. You were not with them when they drew straws as to which one of them will be charged with Mary; you were not with them when they disputed.
We should of course avoid extremes.
May ALLAH see fit to Guide all seekers.

Peace,
well put.
gamble at your own detriment. gambling is obviously a loosing game overall..

Competing is the better term instead of gambling. It is the trigger of the instinct that is detrimental.

human nature is very eggosit , he never accept the losing at any cost, so he try to chase in which most of the time he lose again, that cause other satanic things like murder rob fight. usually in gambling the chances of trouble is so much ..

Peace be with you,
Competing is not a better term instead of gambling. It is not the trigger of the instinct that is detrimental. - We can not consider competing to be a bad thing as we are instructed by Allah to compete in righteousness.
Games of chance and intoxicants are the work of the devil - he only wishes to cause animosity between you. Stay away from them if you are to be success full. - Let us Remember that.
;D ;D ;D
(I have read some of your other posts brother and read some of your writings on your boards.com site - I think I understand a lot of what you are trying to get at; about Allah being a Being that is different to anything else; nothing can be compared to Him; no image; but can be within a person as with the many examples of Esa,, that is that Allah can be found within a person, He is closer to us than our jugular vein; however He manifests Himself and helps us more when we do as we are commanded by Him -?- however I think that in this current thread post in particular you have called it wrong bro )
Peace and blessings and best wishes

I do not buy that. Competition is an instinctive impulse. Either you are righteous or you are not, it is nothing to trigger the instinct for. The drive to be better than others is animalistic. It is a call to build up the possibility to be arrogant. Competition is driving towards arrogance. There is no use of competition at all.
Why gambling is bad is because it lures forth the instinct in us (in the bodies = Satan). Why gambling and competition is bad is the equally same reason. Gambling causes animosity and so may competition overall. When you take it as a challenge and give in to the instinct you will let the instinct get the better of you. Very hard competition makes anger easy to accumulate, when you take the challenge very seriously. But even without anger you will clearly display instinctive behavior.
That is why I never try to compete with anyone. I do not even play games versus anyone.
If it would seem that we are to compete in righteousness then clearly the interpretation must be wrong. The translation is likely supposed to be something else

I agree with you - for doesn't the Qur'an remind us "what is the life of this world except competition in wealth and children"
However, we are also instructed to compete in righteousness.
This could be a mis-translation and will have to be looked into - but I think it makes sense as stands.
Competition can be a good thing - why must it be exclusively bad?
I understand that competition can lead to anger, frustration, etc. but can it also not lead to fairness? In a free market it is the freedom of competition and competitive businesses that keeps prices low or quality high (or so I am told).
Furthermore, if we were to compete (or strive?) in righteousness, and therefor complete in being humble while being righteous, wouldn't the virtues being competed for cancel out any negative that can arise from competition?
Just some thoughts to reflect upon, ultimately The God knows the truth, I ask He teach us it.
Peace,

Peace,
Stevenexactly my brother ,
we are locked in the gravity of competetion...
think about the starting point of birth...
we compete more than 3 million semens at the very first day of our (birth history) to cling in the resting place of mother, then get birth, then start crawling , walking running, race competetion is the first of our memory some come first some last, then exams grades, everything we locked in competetion,, we cannot get rid of this thing...
but again you are right we should compete not for making somebody lose... but for making ourself win...
hope you got it..
if you play for making somebody lose you will lose eventulay..
play hard but play honestly, this life is also a game ..lol
and a competetion hereafter is waiting for us.. levels of paradise , i still dnt know will there be a next step of journey after hereafter.. our story will finish like happy ending .. or there is something else waiting for us,
God knows best
peace

Business competition is not that great. There are downsides with it such as moving of production to cheap labor countries, minimum number of employees to sustain production, cheaper materials, lower quality. So competition is harmful in many ways.
If you wish to cut the cost of a product you have to cut down on something else. Sure profit is one way of doing it, but generally somewhere in the chain someone is hurt. In Sweden there is a problem with the farmers not being paid enough for milk and many of them stop selling milk because they do not earn to get a decent living while the dairies earn a lot of money as a middle-hand, and they fight to deliver as cheap milk as possible in the stores but usually at the expense of the farmers rather than the dairies. If customers were willing to pay a little more and there was not so much competition the farmers would be more successful.
There are many cases where business competition is detrimental.

AmenuelThen couldn't competition been seen as similar to a Knife, or a Computer - the thing itself competition is neither good nor bad, however it is it's application that is important?
A knife can be used for a good cause to help in cutting food or objects. or for bad murder, robbery, etc.
The same applies to competition - it can bring people together... like a team, teamwork can do wonders for bringing people together, making friends, learning and understanding leadership and chain of command, it can help the "quiet" or "loners" gain confidence.
However there are bad sides to it football teams fans pointlessly fighting, division, jealousy, anger. It is quite an unusual thing - a game of football brings people together, but also divides.
I believe this is why the Qur'an promotes competing for righteousness; however it warns us to be careful of games of vein amusement.
I completely get your point about how bad it can be though because of the business examples you listed - the more I'm reading your posts and messages the more I am being moved towards your understanding though about satan being the instinct essentially,, I am just confused as to these things.... like emotions for example, Qur'an warns us against having a heart made of stone, so clearly we are not supposed to become emotionless, but learn to control our feelings?
I pray The God increases us in Knowledge and Understanding.

Emotions driven by the instinct should be avoided or at least paid attention to if avoidance is not immediately possible. You can probably figure out what is driven by the instinct through a little contemplation. Your person should be driven by logic much like a machine that would not insert emotions into a decision. But, you should constructively work for such which would cause general development and in this world is helps as a tool to emulate humanliness in order to interact with people, even if you achieve perfect separation from the world yourself. It could be seen as hypocritical to play a game, but in this case it is more like strategy. Therefore you cannot seem like a machine in this life if you would like to help others less conscious than you are. Empathy is a great tool and it also helps yourself from affliction of the instinct which tends to turn you towards selfishness.
It is you who choose who you are. Make the best of yourself. And remember it is always good to think like this "Everything is possible, nothing is impossible". If you only knew the true existence you would not doubt a second.

I think regarding this discussion about competition is that the Quran clearly states compete in righteousness only.
Simple definition the act or process of trying to get or win something (such as a prize or a higher level of success) that someone else is also trying to get or win the act or process of competing actions that are done by people, companies, etc., that are competing against each other
Competing in righteousness means, charity, prayer, good deeds, good words. When we compete with each other in this aspect, we all benefit and gain and humanity benefits. We will all be in Paradise chilling with each other (god willing) because our scale and book of deeds will be filled with righteousness and this form of competition will have helped encourage each other, inspire each other to be better and help uplift our community.
This may mean competing in righteousness with other religions or non believers. What great examples would we be if we could out beat the Mormons with charity work. What if we always took the higher road with a rough or rude person or what if we practiced patience in tolerance with someone of a different mind or belief system. This is great dawah or missionary work to the straight path. What if 2 totally opposing religions worked for the better good and competed in righteousness. ( SALAAM-SHALOM groups as an example - do this every winter and work together competing in righteousness. Humanity benefits in the end.)
I think this also is a reminder to not compete in other aspects and to not be jealous of what others have. Most people compete out of a desire to be the winner to " keep up with the Joneses'" but GOD knows that it is detrimental to Humanity. We need to help each other, not bring and tear each other down.
Just my two cents on this topic.

Indeed the story of Moses and the traveler is a good lesson for people.
But seeking to defeat others is not in my world of God. Competition is aimed at defeating someone else. We should help others.

human emotions are unable to control in some specific points of life.. specially when other person want to give you problems and sadness , its difficult to love him in return, the law of emotions bring negetive results for rival, competetor and specially ur enemy..
showing good emotions for frd or sympathiser is very easy task .. same like swiming with the flow of water is easy..
but showing good emotions from inside to ur enemy is a difficult task... same like swiming opposite of the flow of water..there our test start and 99 in 100 find it difficult and usually carry on with flow..
two three times in my life i wanted to take revenge from somebody and i was in a position one day to take revenge but i forgive just due to the condition that God like those who forgive.. but still this day i hate her... why i hate her i really sometimes not understand...
