as far i research,, the theory which fit best is...
one sole genderless then a couple from that sole male and female...
the one sole state could be anytime started from the first cell of life ..probably.. our understanding started from adam and wife .. the couple generate all present humanity...
a male cell cannot generate any cell i think ,so thats the law after getting shape=perfected human being=adam+mate.. before getting shape/form the set of laws were different which is not relevant to us or we are still unable to understand them.. some hints in evolution might help...
infact quran talks about creation of human being the evolution of human being is left for us to research... its quite wise and interesting how God describe things so that human seek and get things discover from the covering of misunderstanding...

The verse mentioned is not about initial couple rather "your" creation in the womb i.e. cell division and all start as generic embryo (i.e. female) then sex chromosomes code starts when hormones like testosterone at their programmed stage take over which without each would remain a female.
