but I wanted to ask if anyone knows of Muslims that would consider this forgivable and would this belief be completely unheard of?

When a Muslim commits suicide, would everyone consider that person not to have believed in Allah when they died, even if they professed to?

When it does happen do people pray for their forgiveness or do they just believe they will go to hell?
    Many thanks.

I know a family of those who died through performing the act of suicide bombing which believe that

    1. The suicide bomber will go to heaven, earned 72 virgins as they died as 'martyr' in the 'cause of Allah'.
    2. Since member of the family has died through martyrdom, the family then also believe that they will also go to heaven, since the martyr will earn the rights of 'safa'at' and can choose up to 1000 people of quota on who shall he select to enter heaven. Obviously the suicide martyr will choose those who are close to him, family members and also friends..
    3. Basically the suicide bomber will then viewed as a 'hero'. Instead of asking for 'his forgiveness'.. they will ask the suicide martyr to pass along their forgiveness (since he's now has earn the rights of 'safa'at' a.k.a mediator)

The above belief are common to be found within Sunnis Muslims..

That's a sticky topic in one area and that happens to be the medical condition. Just a few years ago, when I had to always face the topic of assisted suicide for the terminally ill patients, I made a thread about it here. If I remember correctly we all had the same kind of "stuck" feeling about it.

I have seen a previous topic on this website with someone asking first hand, would they be forgiven for the act of suicide, but I wanted to ask if anyone knows of Muslims that would consider this forgivable and would this belief be completely unheard of?

I did once see a sunniforum thread in which some sectarians were saying that suicide for the sake of religion is acceptable -\

When it does happen do people pray for their forgiveness or do they just believe they will go to hell?

In that case of religious suicide, Jafar is right. In other cases, I think it is natural for loved ones to do such prayers.

Does the cause of death ever get hidden by the person's family?

I believe this can be done by just about anyone for a wide variety of reasons. Religion does not need to be the factor. I mean sometimes people may decide to hide it because they were the instigators and they just don't want any trouble with the law.

People who suffer from depression, whaever their beliefs, may commi suiide beacause of their conndition. In that sense it cannot be treated like suiide because it is a diease.

As to the suiide bombers, hahahaha, I just wonder how many of hem are leggit.

Onn the other hannd in war many heroes did indeed die vonlunarily beaue they incurred a risk where death was certain.

Funyy how talk goes off to folklore suiide ommbing when somebody ask about plain suicide.

        Salaam

I am really surprised at your statement, quote

          Do you know all "Sunnis"?
For example I know a lot of Sunnis who are against suicide bombing. Some are very peaceful and tolerant folk.
If you mean a small minority, then you need to be careful not to tarnish every Sunni with the same quote.
And just in case you wonder,I am not a Sunni, nor do I share their belief.I am just advising on "fairness" like we want for ourselves.

sometimes i laugh what people claims actually....

sunni kids get died in suicide bombings... sunni male females get died in suicide bombings,,,

there are operations going on by pak army to eliminate suicide bombings... and they treated them like terrorists ...

as far i know from last ten years i encounter more than 10000 sunnis from everywhere they claim suicide bombers are wrong. they are not a part of islam.. and stuff like that...

using a label of muslim did not make you what God like ..in acts...

sunnis shia hindus , chinese , christians ,jews.. all are unaware what scholars inject in them.. by their innerside they know God is supreme everybody will judge according to the knowledge and ability they gain ... God will not do unjust to anybody ...

if a hindu pray to bhagwan ,and he claimed its eshwar the one ...that can help. usually they call supreme being oper wala the one on its high..

if chirstian think God come down to earth in the shape of jesus.. infact indirectly they claim God is all in all

sunnis beleive the muhammad was prophet of God and he make them aware about true God.. indirectly they are also want to please God thats what their scholars tell them... in this way your God will b pleased...if you glorify muhammad...

all things depend on niyaat(inner side).. but honestly if they all read their basic teaching of scriptures they stop doing things what they are doing in ingnorancy...

interestingly i studied some hindu teachings the veda claim God is one , have no image, no eye can grasp the image of God... in light of this if they create a statue and their pandit people dnt stop them its not the mistake of random people...

same in christianity jeses himself never claim worship me or i m God..

same in sunni quran muhammad never talk i m the one who will take you to the heavens if you follow bukhari and company...

but God knows inner and outer... he will infact judge everybody what they act in this role , how they act in this role of life...

Being an ex-sunni myself, you're right. Those aren't the common beliefs among many "sunni" countries.
Why ? How ? Simply because in those countries, where they call themselves"moderate" they don't preach those hadiths that call for killing and 72 virgins etc. The so called "moderate" basically preach all that is good in the hadiths like "prayers", "charity", "more prayers" etc, while small groups do preach those extreme hadtihs and are usually jailed for that. In other countries, extremism is the norm or just more common.

                Hi,

Hope these open questions don't offend anyone. I'm researching for a screenplay I'm working on and had a few questions to find out views on suicide.

I have seen a previous topic on this website with someone asking first hand, would they be forgiven for the act of suicide, but I wanted to ask if anyone knows of Muslims that would consider this forgivable and would this belief be completely unheard of?

Does the cause of death ever get hidden by the person's family?

I'd really appreciate any views on this.

                Many thanks.

if a person is mentally sick due to whatever reason , the law of God not applied on him...

for example an insane perosn kill somebody court will not give an order to punish him with death penalty...

same if he kill himself without awaring what he actually doing will not make him suicider...

98 percent cases of suicides the brain stop works due to reasons or situations unexpected....

let say a women is getting raped and she want to save her honour anymeans possible she get suicide... do u think its a punishable deed...or she will burn inhell she was about to save her chasity...

a person suffer a huge loss in money whatever he earn in his whole life,,, not only money but he is indebted to people who are after him and give him torture and eventaully killed him after torture, so he just make his death easy by appraoching suicide...

when people commmit suicide its usually a situaton uncontrollabe or a mentally sick people... nothing else...

i did not see anybody doing suicide who is normal... even people hanging their legs in grave on death bed wish to live hunndred years more.. rotfl

                  I slightly revise

                  1. Since member of the family has died through martyrdom, the family then also believe that they will also go to heaven, the martyr has earn the rights of 'safa'at' and can choose up to 1000 people of quota on who shall he select to enter heaven. Obviously the suicide martyr will choose those who are close to him, family members and also friends..
                  2. Basically the suicide bomber martyr will then viewed as a 'hero'. Instead of asking for 'his forgiveness'.. they will ask the suicide martyr to pass along their forgiveness (since he's now has earn the rights of 'safa'at' a.k.a mediator)

The status of Martyrdom can be achieved through many means, death in the battlefield, death while in the process of killing the enemy of Allah (read Infidel / Kuffar) including by suicidal means or death when one was performing the ritual in Mecca (read victims of Hajj disaster, that's why nobody sued the Hajj organizer/Saudi kingdom for any disastrous event which caused thousands of death)

THE ABOVE beliefs are common to be found within Sunni Muslims.. regarding their view on Syuhada / Martyr and reward of "Syafa'at".

Guys, very few sectarians will directly tell you they support suicide bombing. Internet is where one can freely speak about it because of the privacy it offers. Examples below

                    1. This guy below is undecided about whether it is wrong.

I have not decided yet but I was wondering if someone could post the hadith that Palestinian scholars use to justify suicide bombing. One of them is of the sahaabah that flung himself over the wall to open the gate and the other is something about how Rasulullah called people to die for him when he was under attack or close to this. If anyone knows what I am referring to please post to complete this discussion.

                    1. This guy won't even call it suicide bombing

What a useless thread... Suiced is totally haram... You can not call the Mujahedden and sheheeds as suicide bombers or people in Jahannam... You must be afraid of Allah... These operations are called as shehadeh operations and used to destroy enemies.... It is done according to conditions... In Canakkale war and some others, there were a lot of fedai mujahideen....

                    1. Same opinion from another one

                    Salman Al-Farsi

                    This poll is wrong.

                    Suicide is plain haraam.

But Martyrdom operation is something different.

                    and its NOT multiple choice.

                    1. Another one

suicide ... enemy is not afraid of .

martyrdom operation ...enemy is most afraid of .

the distinction is clear cut ...

There is nothing wrong with martyrdom opration as it shatters the enemies ..

what shatters the enemy most is the most desirable .

                    1. This one also believes it can be justified

how about Edit the poll with more suitable options?
its kinda mixing suicide n suicide operations, both r done in totaly different maner, one of them can b justified acording to religion and other is a worse sin if cumited under any surcumstances like social pressure

                    1. Someone replies to guy #1

NoLongerLost (http//www.ummah.com/forum/member.php?u=24119) , If your support ive of the Palestian cause then I think the more correct term for the Palestians "suicide bomber" is a Homocide bomber or Smart self bomber...dont you think so?
Na'am a clear distiction needs to be made between what is 'suicide' out of dispair/other a matter condemned and completely haram and 'martyrdom operations' which as a tactic of Jihaad is permitted according to some 'Ullema within the correct context in light of the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the Seerah.

This thread title and wording are somewhat unclear, muffled, and misleading- thus the options and ramifications via ones choice is vague and could be misinterpreted therefore I shall abstain from voting.

I have not decided yet but I was wondering if someone could post the hadith that Palestinian scholars use to justify suicide bombing. One of them is of the sahaabah that flung himself over the wall to open the gate and the other is something about how Rasulullah called people to die for him when he was under attack or close to this. It is not just Palestinian scholars that permit this but a many 'Ullema from other sides of the borders from the Ummah based on the evidences.

The Sahabi (ra) whom flug himself (and asked his fellow Companions to hoist him) over the wall into the heart of the enemy with little or no cover in the thick of spears and a barrage of blades to open the gates from within the inner quarters of side from the wall of the enemy who armed with just his own body and little armoury on what can militarily (and in very other sense) be termed as absolute 'suicide' was our beloved Baraa' ibn Malik (ra), the brother of Anas ibn Malik (ra).

Baraa' (ra) was noted and distinguised for his bravery and courage- a fierce warrior that sought out martyrdom, and was physically a thin skinny individual though with the heart of a Lion.

Though from the elite of Muslim warriors he was never given the position of Commander/ Ameer of Expeditions for it is said in his thirst for martyrdom he would surely himself hasten and lead the rank of fighters with him without hesitation to certain death (Shuhadah) via plunging himself and his men under the swords to kill and be killed, such was his example.

Akhy about your other point- are you referring to when Rasul'Allah (saw) took the baiyah of martyrdom from the Sahabah (ra)? Which they glady gave to Islaam?

feel free to read the entire thread http//www.ummah.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-105749.html

                      Many thanks.

                      Salaam/Peace ElleZed,

here we should clearly see this Verse, first of all

                      ====================
29- O you who believe, do not consume your properties-money between you unjustly, unless it is through a trade which is mutually agreed by you.
And do not kill your own selves/souls (=anfusakum); (for) certainly, AL-LAH is Most-Merciful towards you.

30- And whoever does so out of animosity (towards himself/herself and towards AL-LAH) and transgression (against himself/herself and against AL-LAH),
We will cast him/her to a Fire; and this for AL-LAH is Most-Equitable.

                      QURAN TESTAMENT 4/29-30

So in my Understanding, if someone commits suicide
out of sheer animosity (towards himself/herself and towards AL-LAH) and transgression (against himself/herself and against AL-LAH),

then he/she may end up in Fire --(if he/she was a hostile person who would burn himself/herself and also other innocent people
                      with real Fire here (=85/4-10),
then in such a real Fire therein, (=40/17, 40)

and if he/she was a hostile person who would burn himself/herself and also other innocent people
with emotional Fire (=i.e. utterly insulting, scorning and ridiculing them, all the time, etc.) here,
then in such an emotional Fire therein. (=40/17, 40)

But thereafter, --(after tasting the consequences of his/her own sin, in full, therein)--
if he/she truly repents and returns to AL-LAH in that (real or emotional) Fire in the Hereafter,
our Lord AL-LAH may forgive him/her even therein,
and may immediately admit him/her into Paradise therein, when/if HE wills so. (=11/106-107)

When we pray to AL-LAH, we should always pray
exclusively and only as HE perfectly teaches to us
in QURAN TESTAMENT how to pray to seek HIS Forgiveness,
                      here

                      ====================
19- So know that there is no God except AL-LAH,
and seek Forgiveness for your own sins and also for (the sins) of the believing males and the believing females.

i.e. thus we should always say
my LORD, please, forgive my sins, and (the sins) of the believing males and the believing females.

And AL-LAH knows your movements and your place of rest.

                      QURAN TESTAMENT 47/19 = 71/28

So if that person who committed suicide above (=4/29) is still truly worthy of being remembered
among those believing males or believing females mentioned in the above Verse

--because only our Lord AL-LAH can know it, because only HE knows all the circumstances
with regard to that suicide committed above (=4/29), and
what was in the heart & mind of that person who committed that suicide (=4/30), at that time--

then that person may automatically be included in our Prayer above, among those believing males or believing females
                      mentioned in the above Verse.

But finally, we should never forget that

Believers should never despair and should never lose hope, no matter what the circumstances are, (=3/139 & 15/56)
we should absolutely and always trust in our Lord AL-LAH with all our heart & mind & soul & strength,

and thus we Should/Must always choose to live, in the Name of AL-LAH, till our normal death here,
in such an Excellent manner here, at that time, inshaAL-LAH. (=16/30-32)

                      Remain in peace/salaam.

Thanks for all your feedback on the topic. Thanks also to reel for the breakdown of views you'd experienced on the subject.

Yes, it wasn't about suicide bombing, though now I would like to ask is it a case of Muslims interpreting the Qu'ran in different ways? I saw this on a website

"There is an unpopular view that actions committed in the course of jihad resulting in one's own death are not considered suicide, even if by the nature of the act death is assured (e.g. suicide bombing). Such acts are instead considered a form of martyrdom. However, there is Quranic evidence to the contrary stating those involved in the killing of the innocent are wrongdoers and transgressors. Nevertheless, some claim Islam does permit the use of suicide only against the unjust and oppressors if one feels there is absolutely no other option available and life otherwise would end in death."

Is this an UNPOPULAR view amongst Muslims, as they say?

Also, as it would be suicide that someone has taken their own life (and no-one else's) someone here mentioned if it is depression that this would be different as it would be a disease. What else could they take their own life for if it wasn't due to mental illness? (Genuine question).

You're welcome. Do notice the author's opening line. What it is trying to say is that scholars do not agree with one another. One group believes that jihad driven suicide is martyrdom, but then there are also those who don't believe so because of certain Quran verses. This problem stems from the contradicting hadiths, the alleged sayings of the Prophet. As long as they are here, one has the power to cherry pick what they want to consider 'Islamic'. They also have the power to accept and reject Quran verses because hadiths approve abrogation and replacement. That is why, the author's words don't matter.

Majority of the sectarians, of course, condemn suicide just like him. But if you just tell them that a hadith supports it they will become silent or side with it no matter how much it seems immoral. Like see here the first post from ummah forum

His conscience is telling him it is wrong, but he is ready to not hear it if he is provided the alleged saying of the Prophet about the suicide.
