    Salaam,
I was reading Quran yesterday and came across this
    51
51 O YOU who have attained to faith! Be true to your covenants! Lawful to you is the beast that feeds on plants, save what is mentioned to you but you are not allowed to hunt while you are in the state of pilgrimage. Behold, God ordains in accordance with His will.

Ba-ha-Miim = animals that pasture/graze, lamb/goat/sheep, animals of the bovine kind, stay/remain in a place, not to quit, continue to look at a thing without being relieved by doing so, silent/confounded/perplexed to a thing, not to fight or engage in conflict, a thing dubious/vague/confused, closed/locked door, courageous man, beasts/brutes.

Nun-Ayn-Miim = to lead an easy life, enjoy the comforts and conveniences of life, be joyful, comforts/delights, become easy/soft/plentiful/pleasant/good/flourishing, to knead/cook well. in'aam - beneficence, favour to a person, blessing, gifted (with speech/talent/reason etc).

Chicken is an omnivore and eats insects as part of its natural diet. Muhammad Asad defends eating chicken via a hadith. I could not find any reference to chicken or birds in the Quran. Does anyone have idea where we are allowed to eat chicken. It is also to be noted that pig is haraam in the Quran and I think the reason is because it is also an omnivore. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

      Salam,

I don't know why you're using translation by a sectarian, Mohammad Asad, but here's another of the same verse by a non-sectarian
      51
O you who believe, honor the contracts. Made permissible for you
are the animals of the livestock, except that which is being recited
to you. Do not make permissible the hunting of game while you
are under restriction. God decrees as He pleases.

Chicken is considered a livestock, meaning it's lawful during the 4 restricted months. It's not game as you don't need to hunt them with spears and arrows.

      Salam

        Salaam,
That still leaves the problem of the root B-H-M as meaning grazers and not livestock. Not sure why it is being translated as livestock. You can domesticate a lot of animals (cats, dogs) and technically could eat them since the Quran does not explicitly refer to prohibition of these animals either.

What did the Bani Israeli eat in the wilderness after leaving Misr?

Actually let me be clear with you, Allah has highlighted for me this.
You need to study Quran more attentively and not attempt to forbid yourself or anyone anything you have not been sent authority for ever.
I was simply going to tell you to read 6145
But your question reveals you should revisit the entire Surah and patiently so.
At the very least 6145-156 and learn the proper tools at your disposal to study.
How can you entrust your understanding to a translator?

            http//corpus.quran.com/wordbyword.jsp?chapter=6&verse=145

Asking if chicken is permissible after reading the entire Quran is such an embarrassing question to ask

Good remark, smriza. I had never reflected upon chicken as an omnivore. From a perspective of nutrition this is good quality meat even considered to be better than so-called red meat.

Comparing it to the pig however would be exaggerated. The pig is quite dirty and eats just about anything and the animal is very related to humans biologically.

              Be well
              Amenuel

Peace, Quran mentions that all good food is made lawful for you, excepting what is clearly stated

Personally considering the quality of meat especially chicken in modern supermarkets etc I wouldn't eat it, unless it's organic or home raised

                Peace

You are right. I buy certain Swedish domestic chicken due to that. That is decent quality.

Thank you to remind me that chickens are omnivore but i do not count them as predators which eat other animals and as stated technically we could eat Dogs and cats since the Quran does not explicitly refer to prohibition of these animals.
But as i remeber there are ayats that are hinting that some animals serve as Transportation and some for the hunt ,i prefer to abstain from eating horses or donkeys.

                    peace

I know that Cats and Dogs are predators but i eat chicken because they are not predators like other omnivore animals for example the bear.

                          salaam

6114 "Shall I seek other than God as a judge when He has sent down to you the Book fully detailed?" Those to whom We have given the Book know it is sent down from your Lord with the truth; so do not be of those who have doubt.
6115 And the word of your Lord has been completed with truth and justice; there is no changing His words. He is the Hearer, the Knower.
6116 And if you obey most of those on the earth they will lead you away from the path of God; that is because they follow conjecture, and that is because they only guess.
6117 Your Lord is fully aware of who strays from His path, and He is fully aware of the guided ones.
6118 So eat from that on which the name of God has been mentioned, if you indeed believe in His revelations.
6119 And why should you not eat that on which the name of God has been mentioned, when He has fully detailed to you what has been made unlawful; except what you are forced to? Many misguide by their desires without knowledge; your Lord is fully aware of the transgressors.

                          keep it simple.

                            Fully detailed?

According to which is prohibited only the pig is mentioned ,which is not allowed to consume .

Can i eat an eagle? if it is fully detailed in the book what has been made unlawful then i can eat as no prhibition of eagles are mentioned

                            So what now

                              So what now

The way I see it, we are not meant to eat predators, and the human is an omnivore and would by nature be weighing more heavily on a herbivore's diet. Humans today eat too much meat and it shows healthwise.

Old belief is we should only eat meat from animals which graze the meadow except the bird which does not fly and is domestic called chicken, and turkey for that matter. This is something that the Bible seeks to get across despite poor translation. I can see sense in keeping the food chain short by eating an animal which does eat plants. This would limit yourself to cows, sheep and goats (including some related species) except the horse which is not an animal you draw milk from. As cattle, those first mentioned animals seem best.

While everything is about what is more logical there appears to be some sense in what I understood from old writings.

Either way, the most no go animal you have is the pig, it is a clearly unclean animal and this is even testable using science.

Point is, everything is about eating what keeps your body at peace so that your spirit may work freely without disturbance. A mainly vegetarian diet is best with a mix of some healthy good quality meat. It is definitely recommended to cook the food and not eat it raw when it comes to meat. Vegetables can be eaten raw as long as they are clean to begin with.

Think healthy and use what knowledge can offer you and skip religious dogma, is an advice that I have. There are also no strict dietary restrictions but clear advice. Should no other meat than the pig be available it would be okay to eat it, the advice against it is if you can choose due to the pig's lower quality when it comes to meat. That goes for everything.

E.g. today it is a health concern with sugar so I would issue a piece of advice not to consume sugar and if not possible to cut down completely at least reduce it as much as possible.

                              Be well

Speaking about the food, there're 2 conditions

                                1. food cannot be haram (forbidden) in any way, which is fully described in the Qur'an, but it can't be stolen too, for example
                                2. food has to be tayyib (good).

So, even the eagle is not mentioned as haram, it still has to be tayyib. Otherwise, ones who're consuming not-tayyib food are following Sheytan's footsteps.

I agree with MoF about "healthy" as it can be possible explanation of "tayyib".

So the pig is absolutely a no go then arent we allowed to eat whale alos as cause i ve read whales are more closely linked to an extinct pig-like animal, often known as India?s pig or Indohyus, while hippos are closely related to living pigs.

I have no clue about the whale. Although I would not eat it because they are endangered and nearly extinct.

                                          Salamun Alaikum!

I have a few questions and hope I will be able to get answers here

                                          1. Is Cannibalism allowed in Quran or prohibited?

                                          2. In the following, I need clarification about the word "Some"

3671 Did they not see that We created for them with Our own hands livestock which they own?
3672 And they were subdued by Us for them. So some they ride, and some they eat.
3673 And they have benefits in them, and to drink. Would they not be thankful?

                                          1. Need some detail/explanation of the words "And that you may reach by them what is desired in your chests."

4079 God is the One who made the livestock for you that you may ride on some of them, and some of them you eat.
4080 And you have other benefits in them. And that you may reach by them what is desired in your chests. And on them and on the ships, you are carried.

                                          1. Is it a lie/part of innovation "and livestock over which they do not mention the name of God"?

6138 And they said "These livestock and crops are reserved, and none shall eat from them except as we please," by their claims; and livestock whose backs are forbidden, and livestock over which they do not mention the name of God as an innovation against Him. He will recompense them for what they invented.

                                          1. Why there is a verification question i.e., "spell quran backwards?" before posting your questions at this forum?

                                          Thank you in advance.
