I looked up the word "shahr" in the dictionary (Lisan Al-3arab) and it doesn't seem to mean "month", "30 consecutive days", or "30 intermittent days". The primary meaning is "something obvious", "something public", and "something wide". It is also reported in the dictionary that the Arabs used to call the moon "shahr". In modern Arabic, someone "mashhur" is a public celebri

Salaams latif,
you may be on to something there-the traditional view,
but to me there are words which are formed by joining smaller/other words .There are words like this in english and urdu and i don't/won't beleive that there are none in the arabic lingoIts not possible. And i am not saying this alone The Quranic Dictionary - even ,gives examples of arabic words which are formed by joining words aswell.
As far as i can remember.Example
christmas = christ and mass.
Sunday = sun and day. e.t.cNow its up to you to give us some Arabic words made by joining words , as you are the expert in the lingo but if you don't want to venture in this avanue - hard luck -to you,i think.
Salaams.

No brother, I know better than some and worse than some. I know, and others agree, that RAMADHAN is one word and not two. You are the one that has to prove how he thinks not me, since you are presenting a very non connventional meaning for RAMADHAN. You can also find RAMADHAN in LANE as well. Why do you take part of LANE and ignore the rest? Did LANE or QD suggest that RAMADHAN is made of two words? Or did you just create it?

Salaam Br.,
no i didn't figure this out,but Br. Gourself, came accross it somewhere-i beleive but made sense but i will check further, and yes we can't accept the whole of any dictionary but just the quran and certainly no mangled translation done by people without using there common sense.who make such absurd translation which make spiders talk and i don't give any weight for that matter to any Br. who beleives in such neither ,- Whether you consider my trans or not ,Thanks and Salaam.

God's blessing on all,
I'm glad that we are having this discussion. I want to put my points and thoughts so that they are clear
-
I think it is obvious that Ramadan is ont made of two words because of the grammar involved.
-
If the 'rama' part of Ramadaan came from the root 'ramy' or 'raa' 'meem' 'yaa' the 'yaa' would be represented in the word Ramadaan and it is not in any way. Compound words do exist in every language but they do not break the rules of the language.
-
hlatif is right. The burden of proof is on the person who is presenting the new theory. Can you really present good evidence that ramadan comes from those two words? And secondly can you present evidence that the word could have been used in that manner?
-
Even if you are right about the etymology of the word. That does not mean that the Arabs of Muhammad's time used the word in this manner. It would be in the dictionaries as that, if it were a real meaning of the word.
As for Lisaanul-arab, it primarily deals with the perspective of shah-r as it relates to the moon, making it obvious that a large portion of Arabs used the moon to count months. It does mention that it was used as a perod of 29 days, but again we have other examples of how it was used as 30 days. If we can find evidence of it linguistically being used as a period of 30 days outside of the Koran we will then have more linguistic evidence to back up the Koran's implication. The Koran obviously implies that 2 months worth of fasting is equal to 60 days, and by logic, 1 month = 30 days. This implication is the word of the Koran! I think we are to respect that most of all. Finding linguistic evidence that 'shah'r' can mean
something else and that the Arabs of Muhammad's day used it in other ways is good. We may find that 'shah'r' is used in another way in the Koran. However, it is clear that-
Shah'r does have the meaning of 'month'
-
The Koran implies that we are to count a 'sha'r' in the meaning of a 'month' as 30 days.
I know of a hadeeth that says that when one cannot tell the beginning and end of Ramadan one is just to fast 30 days thereby speaking to the fact that a month was also considered 30 days during the time when Muhammad's language was still alive and kicking.
