According to Joseph Islams article this is still referring to wedlock, in ref to 425. And he really specifies that they are just mentioned separately as they are different "categories". Still unclear on what he means. What do you guys think?

The free mind explanation didn't make much sense to me as how can you show your private parts to someone in your oath?
What does make sense is you can loosen your dress in front of them. Perhaps that's what could mean by lowering your chastity.
For example if a woman has a full time male servant/slave at her home than that would mean she would have to dress modest even in her own home, whereas per this verse she can dress comfortably. Kind of makes sense. Does this fit?

Or the other alternative is Joseph Islam's explanation, the the reason wife and MMA (in wedlock) is bcz they're 'seperate categories'...

Ofcourse the last explanation the one sunnis would rally too is that this verse permits sex with slaves. Ugh.....

Mamalakat ayman... can be men or women and can be married or unmarried and those who have mamalakat ayman... can also be men or women. I think in this case Joseph Islam is right and it is clear in 4.25 that mamalakat are not slaves or anything of the kind. They are persons to the charge or someody else. That is, they are not able to stand on their own feet economically. They have not enough independence. But if they marry, it is real marriage, not some other arrangement. And since they start from circumstances which are not as autonomous as those of other women or men who may more assertive, if they fall into something punishable they will get half punishment.

Mamamlakat ayman is not a synonime of spouse, but the spouse condition is
understood and given by the context. The ayas preceeding 4.25 which state which kind of persons can be taken in marriage also make it clear, I think.
