Khalifa in 2:30 has to mean Satan!
-
Peace,
In my opinion,The word khalifa in 230 is translated as successor
230 - And your Lord said to the angels "I am placing a successor on the earth." They said "Will You place in it he who would make corruption in it, and spill blood; while we praise by Your glory, and exalt to You?" He said "I know what you do not know."
I've seen a couple of threads talking about this verse but they date back to 06.
What are your beliefs on this matter, regarding who is meant by "successor" in this verse. The word successor means a person who succeeds one who came before him and assumes all the authority that belonged to the first.
God's reign and authority can never end, thus there can be no successor to follow God or come in place of God. The word khalifa as used in the Quran means "supreme ruler".God tells David in 3826 that He made him a khalifa
O David, We have made you a khalifatan on the earth. Therefore, you shall judge among the people with the truth, and do not follow desire, lest it diverts you from the path of God. Indeed, those who stray off the path of God will have a severe retribution for forgetting the Day of Reckoning.
To determine the meaning of khalifa, we have to look at what God made David and what he was given from God
2251 - So they defeated them with the permission of God, and David killed Goliath, and God gave him the kingship and the wisdom and taught him what he wished. And if it were not for God defending the people against themselves, then the earth would have long been corrupted; but God has bestowed grace upon the worlds.
3817 - Be patient to what they say, and recall Our servant David, the resourceful/the possessor of strength. He was obedient.
2179 - So We gave Solomon the correct understanding, and both of them We have given wisdom and knowledge. And We commissioned the mountains with David to praise, and the birds. This is what We did.
3410 - And We granted David blessings from Us "O mountains, echo with him, and the birds." And We softened the iron for him. From the above verses it is clear that God made David a king of great strength, so much so that the mountains and birds were commanded to echo (glorification) with David. The position of great strength wisdom and a great king all tell us that God made David a supreme ruler on earth. This is the correct meaning of the word khalifa. King David was neither a successor, nor representative of God, nor a temporary god.

The traditional interpreters claim that the khalifa in 230 is Adam or the human race in general. This can be shown to be an incorrect interpretation in the light of the Quranic words.
First, the khalifa could not have been Adam since the angels stated that the khalifa would corrupt on earth and shed blood therein. As far as we know, Adam did not do either of those acts. Could the khalifa be the human race as a whole? Once again, this can be shown to be incorrect, and that the khalifa cannot be other than Satan (Iblis).
In 2765 we read that no one in the Heavens and the earth knows the 'ghayb' (unseen/future) except God2765 - Say "None in the heavens or the earth know the unseen except God. And they do not perceive when they will be resurrected."
The angels don't know the unseen. This once again confirmed in the following words
233 - He said "O Adam, inform them of their names," so when he informed them of their names, He said "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and that I know what you reveal and what you are hiding?"
Assuming that the khalifa in 230 is the human being, how did the angels know that the human being will "spread corruption therein and shed blood"? After all, the human being was not created yet at that stage! If the angels knew that the khalifa would spread corruption and shed blood on earth, this means that the khalifa could not have been the human being.
So what did the angels know that made them utter these words, and who was the khalifa the angels were speaking about?
The angels knew of the rebellion of Satan against God, and were aware of the arrogant and egoistic nature of Satan when they complained to God.
They knew of Satan's intentions since Satan himself declared it openly1539 - He said "My Lord, for that by which You have caused me to be misled, I will beautify for them what is on the earth, and I will mislead them all."
3882 - He said "By Your majesty, I will mislead them all."
2421 - O you who believe, do not follow the footsteps of the devil. And whoever follows the footsteps of the devil should know that he advocates immorality and vice. And had it not been for the grace of God upon you and His mercy, not one of you would have ever been purified, but God purifies whom He wishes, and God is Hearer, Knower. What the angels said in 230 was not a prediction of the future, which they had no knowledge of, but they were echoing what Satan himself vowed to do. As a result, they complained to God as to why God would place Satan as a ruler on earth when he will spread corruption and shed blood.
The one whom God made a ruler on earth is indeed Satan. Satan is able to whisper to us while we cannot see him. He is granted powers above the powers of the human being, and he controls the minds of a great section of the human race and he is able to misguide so many.
As you know, scholars have interpreted 230 to mean that they can assign their traditional Imams/Scholars to best fit this position, well I disagree.
I apologise for the colours if they affect you.
God knows best!

Meanings of Khalifatan
- Concept?topic
The topic is about declaring and appointing the Man as self-governor, autonomous, enjoying freedom-discretion-free will of self rule-decision-governance in the Earth before his descent from extra terrestrial abode to the Earth. The Man is being informed that he is not the resident of Earth ever since the creation of his species. Though this was descent - falling action but in an honourable manner and with full liberty to enjoy real freewill . It was not a "catastrophe", not a punishment of sin. It was a new "exposition" - beginning.

Peace to All,
I believe 230 has to be aligned with the Story of Adam in Chapter 2, 7, 15, 17, 18, 38, and the theme therein from the combination of all the chapters which is;
• 1. Allah created all things and Earth
2. Allah to create human beings to 3budu Allah.
3. Adam is created
4. Iblis is introduced
5. Introduction of Adam's wife
6. Concept of sin
7. Adam, wife, sons to accept revealed guidance from later messengers.
8. Prophet Muhammad as the last and final messenger.•
The above is the central theme and the various chapters fill in some details in between.
Except for 230, the other chapters merely brought in Adam directly to the Story but there is no mention of the later succeeding generations.
Following 229, as I understand the Khalifatan in 230 is an explanation to justify how the later generations are to come about, thus fill in the gap of the story.
The Khalifatan, i.e. Adam in this case is the first and initiator of the later generations.
The relevant set which Khalifatan tie with is Khalf, i.e. succeeding generations. It is odd to interpret literally Adam as a successor ... succeed who? since Adam was the first human on Earth.
Thus in the above theme, Khalifahtan from 230 would be 3.1 -the first , head, leader, representative of the succeeding generations , i.e. the sons of Adam.As for the Angels we assumed Allah had created other similar planets and entities who had created havoc elsewhere where the angels are familiar with.

Yes, I also think, that it can't mean "successor.
I know there are some (christians and muslims) who take that view, that Satan is the ruler of this world and I understand that one can come to this conclusion. But imagine, if Satan were really the ruler of this world Nothing here would work anymore as it should and earth would be like hell for everyone. No public order, no peace anywhere, the environment destroyed, we could not live here anymore. I don't think he would be so reasonable to stop at a certain point to keep a minimum of order.476 The true believers fight for the cause of God, but the infidels fight for the devil. Fight then against the friends of Satan. Satan's cunning is weak indeed.
Long term planning with sustainable solutions is not his skill. He is incompetent as a ruler! That's at least how I interpret it.
The human friends of Satan are the ones who have indeed real (but limited) power in this world. -

Peace,
If the word Khalifa in 230 speaks of the human race as a whole, how can the human race be successors of God when the majority of the human race are either disbelievers or idol worshippers (see 6116, 12103 and 12106).
The information for the Story of Adam is not presented in chronological sequence, nor grouped in one Chapter.
3372 - We have offered the trust to the heavens and the earth, and the mountains, but they refused to bear it, and were fearful of it. But the human being accepted it; he was transgressing, ignorant.
It is certain that there was a previous existence, and we are now oblivious of this existence.
Yes, I also think, that it can't mean "successor.
I know there are some (christians and muslims) who take that view, that Satan is the ruler of this world and I understand that one can come to this conclusion. Satan's incompetence is already showing, and it's only going to get worse.
The reason why God ordained things to happen in this way is because we did not accept God's absolute authority. Instead, we accommodated Satan's claims, thus we are made to witness for ourselves the truth in Satan's claims. In addition, we rejected God's offer (3372) which was a merciful second chance for redemption. Had we accepted that gracious offer, we would have been saved from having to go through the test here on Earth. Instead, we were "transgressing and ignorant", preferring to burden ourselves with the trust and responsibility to find out the truth about Satan's claim for ourselves. Our arrogance resulted in us coming to this tiny spec called Earth, which has been appointed by God to be the temporary dominion of Satan, to see for ourselves (as we chose) the truth of his claim. For that, are we entitled to complain about going through all the suffering caused by Satan's incompetence?

For it to mean successor, who are they substituting?
if we say that King B was the successor to King A, this means that the reign of King A has ended and that the reign of King B has come in its place.
The question is who? -
Thhe successors necessarily come after those who were before them. If you do not not who came before them, that is another question. You may ignore it, but if they are successors, for sure some others came before them. Same as I may not know who your parents are but you certainly have had parents.

Peace,
That part is not highlighted.
God just exposed his rebellion, and Satan isn't happy about it.so you are trying to say the satan claim was an accuse to God infact he just say it so that human being will think more negetive about his creator who create situations to make people mislead.. and satan was first victim of God plan in which he get jealous from human being becoz even after creating him from dust he was more intelligent than jinn(ibless) he cracked all the names of things what maliks(angels) were unable to crack... and in all this the other freewill creation get jealous and he refuse the command of God to submit so ibless claim that its God who is sole responsible for his position
its confusing .. need clarification if one could not find in quran then drive your own logic
God must not be illogical or unfair or evil scheme maker otherwise he is not God..In addition, we rejected God's offer (3372) which was a merciful second chance for redemption
how do you know its was a second chance ...
may b this verse is hinting us something else..
when offer was made..how can you give somebody second chance when there is no first chance exist or didnt mention about the first chance..?
what was before that (first chance) how we accepted this trust what was supposed to offer to heavens and earth?
see if there is not a first chance exist its mean God create this creation forcefully just to fill hell with all of us exempting messengers and righteous people who are very few ?
there must b a deal otherwise its illogical to create such a creation just for punishing them in hell and in life when you already know its a faulty creation

The words in 3372 state that everything in the heavens and the earth, which includes all animals, plants and other inanimate objects refused to carry the trusted responsibility and only the human being arrogantly accepted it. This tells us that the vast majority of the guilty creatures took advantage of this opportunity to repent and return to upholding God's absolute authority, while we, the human beings failed to take advantage of this offer and arrogantly preferred to carry the responsibility of finding out for ourselves whether Satan could indeed be a god, as he claimed. The following verse also confirms that the vast majority of creatures in the heavens and the earth have corrected their error and are now worshipping and glorifying God
2441 - Do you not see that everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies God? Even the birds in formation, each knows its contact prayer and its glorification. And God is fully aware of everything they do.

BOLD where did he claim he is god?
on the other hand the verse u posted before he address the God as his lord even after disobeying
look again
1539 - He said "My Lord, for that by which You have caused me to be misled, I will beautify for them what is on the earth, and I will mislead them all."
rest of your post is illogical as per the given understanding you have .. about ibless
who were these humans?
what this all to do with me and you?
why we are here then , i dnt remeber filling a form of test or i did not remember accepting the trust ? -
Satan knows that God is his god, but he wants the mortals to believe that he should be worthy of worship, along with his god. There are others that think that the Satan alone should be worshipped.
3660 - "Did I not pledge to you, O Children of Adam, that you should not serve the devil for he is your most ardent enemy?"
4117 - They are calling on females besides Him. Indeed, they are only calling on a persistent devil.

Me saying "could" doesn't confirm satan being a god.
Satan claims that by whispering into the chests of Mankind.
Believers, most of what I said in this thread is from another article, and this website author seems to believe that the last 2 verses from chapter 9 are false, just found out. I disagree with the author.
This is merely a discussion for me to find truths, where I thought I'd include this article and your thoughts. Author made a contradiction in saying there was existence before Adam, to saying human beings weren't created.BUT, My view on "successor" not suiting 230 still stands.
God knows best.

Sure?? there is no logic for any surety there were humans before Adam.
The context of the Story of Adam is Adam was the first human being created after the Earth was created.
Logically there was no human before Adam.
Therefore Adam cannot be a successor to any other humans. In that case, Khalifatan in 230 denote Adam was the first human who started the succeeding generations of humans.
Adam as Khalifatan was like the 'Queen' Bee or King Bee who was empowered biologically by Allah to start the first human colony. -

Is there a reason why it can't be Satan, without saying there was an existence before Adam. Since Satan was around before the creation of Adam, there must be a link. and that link has been hinted by the angels in 230 "corruption".What do you think about these verses prior to 230 mentioning corruption?
211 - And if they are told "Do not make corruption in the land," they say "But we are reformers!"
212 - No, they are the corrupters, but they do not perceive.
Jumped a few verses to the Satan being the source of vice, corruption.
214 - And if they come across those who have believed, they say "We believe," and when they are alone with their devils they say "We are with you, we were only mocking."If the people are causing corruption through Satan's deceit, who would be the people's ruler? Satan.

brother i dnt know how you understand the quran .. and i already know that theory is presented by khalifa ... who also mislead lot of them by removing two verses.. apart from that..
in 3660 think deeply and then see what God is saying .. the bold part of ur text is indicating towards shaitan not ibless. shaitan is an adjective to evil..
exactly evil/bad/immorality is our enemy. we should not serve it. do not serve satan = do not do bad thingsshaitan word as an adjective you can use for humanbeing too.. even sometimes the same word you use for a naughty kid..
dnt rush take ur time.. learn by words roots and grammer..
God advised us to read and understand quran slowly..
NOTE claiming anything from somebody else lens is not a good choice , becoz you are blindly following the person ideas which is a same human being like me and you..
quran advise us to use our mind reason and logic(17 36) -
The context of the Story of Adam is Adam was the first human being created after the Earth was created.
Logically there was no human before Adam.yes exactly everything started from singularity...
the first human being also started from singularity ..
stars , planets , galaxies all started from singularity...
the animals also started from same process of single cell million of years ago..
logic say the creation must have a start and everything start from singularity then it get multiplied .. handshake
earth created 13.7 billion years ago (as per science and some experiments)
human race just come into play just 2 million years ago
the stage between evolution and creation is only known by God..
the evolved human beings get destroyed like stage after stage (at that time human being was not a thing to mention) ch 76
the first perfected human was adam (thats called theory of creation)quran not only talks about evolution but also creation we get confuse in the quranic evolution and creation when we want to see the evolution by science lens same like when we try to find the ritual process of salat in quran..
quran theory of evolution +creation are two different subjects also different from the theory of darwin..
quran theory of salat is also different compared to bukhari theory of salat...things are not that easy.. we only know what he already told us.. rest of the things are just guess works untill proven as a fact...

brother i dnt know how you understand the quran .. and i already know that theory is presented by khalifa ... who also mislead lot of them by removing two verses.. apart from that..
in 3660 think deeply and then see what God is saying .. the bold part of ur text is indicating towards shaitan not ibless. shaitan is an adjective to evil..
exactly evil/bad/immorality is our enemy. we should not serve it. do not serve satan = do not do bad thingsshaitan word as an adjective you can use for humanbeing too.. even sometimes the same word you use for a naughty kid..
dnt rush take ur time.. learn by words roots and grammer..
God advised us to read and understand quran slowly..
NOTE claiming anything from somebody else lens is not a good choice , becoz you are blindly following the person ideas which is a same human being like me and you..
quran advise us to use our mind reason and logic(17 36)Peace,
You said "and i already know" I didn't ask if you knew or not, lower your aggressive behaviour.
imrankhawaja, this is a discussion. Like I state in many posts that God knows best.
You said "indicating towards shaitan not ibless" The term Shaitan/Satan can refer to any being who disobeys God, and follows Iblis, and intends to harm someone or do mischief.
What are you saying, that there is no correlation between Satan and Iblis? You said "NOTE claiming anything from somebody else lens is not a good choice , becoz you are blindly following the person ideas which is a same human being like me and you.."
I didn't claim anything, and if you read the post above I've mentioned that "This is merely a discussion for me to find truths, where I thought I'd include this article and your thoughts."earth created 13.7 billion years ago (as per science and some experiments)
You say "blindly following" Just like how you declare "earth created 13.7 billion years ago (as per science and some experiments)" Contradiction at its finest.
