In 4.155 the people of the book are accused of killing the prophets

(They have incurred divine displeasure) In that they broke their covenant; that they rejected the signs of Allah; that they slew the Messengers in defiance of right; that they said, "Our hearts are the wrappings (which preserve Allah's Word; We need no more)";- Nay, Allah hath set the seal on their hearts for their blasphemy, and little is it they believe;- (155)

I can't recall any prophet in the Qur'an killed by them.

?Can anybody mention those that indeed ere killed and if possible reference the ayas?

    Thnak you

    Salaam

Nabi is not the messenger, it means insightful, the above translation uses word Messengers, which is usually attributed to the word ra-salam, which does not mean messenger either, but either way the above translation is wrong from both points of view. It is crystal clear what "killing" of what "messenger" it talks about if you care to read few verses further after 4155.

Qatala means to understand something thoroughly, master something, whereas salaba means to follow something, root ts-lam-waw. It is true that people who crucified Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Miryem, the Messiah, or otherwise supported his cruxifiction, did not understand him, nor followed him, that's true.

And of course they did not Kill him, for spiritually he is alive, they only destroyed his body as was prophesized. It was to fulfil the prophecy and for him to become martyr by dying the death of the martyr and to inspire others centuries laters. The symbolism behind his death upon this day inspires other to seek truth despite hardships that a person meets in his life. This is why dying in a warm bed will never be the same as dying a martyr surrounded by a crowd of zombies yelling in favor of the governmental regime and the clergy, which were behind the killing. However, they but played their role, which was prophesized outside of their will.

As for the "seal of their hearts", the same is said in the Gospels "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.", because they were spiritually weaker and could not grasp his teaching, because the seed of the spirit was 'blocked' in them.

It is funny how the fourth chapter is supposed to be about women's issues... rotfl

We gave Moses the Book and followed him up with a succession of messengers; We gave Jesus the son of Mary Clear (Signs) and strengthened him with the holy spirit. Is it that whenever there comes to you a messenger with what ye yourselves desire not, ye are puffed up with pride?- Some ye called impostors, and others ye slay! (87)

Thsi is another aya where mention is made of killing prophets. It says fariq you slay. So it is more than one.

So, again I ask if somebody recalls mention of lain prophets in te Qur'an.

            Tahnk you

            Salaam

              Salam,

Please note that is perfect tense while is imperfect tense. Also in other verses like 261 it is written Yaqtulna An-Nabyna Bighayri Al-aqqi.
It is usually translated by something like "they killed the prophets without right (or justice)".

But how can one kill a prophet with right or justice ?

Literally it is written they "kill" (imperfect) the prophets with the contrary of truth.
Which means they weaken the speech of the prophets with false case.

                  Peace

What does that say? I cant read arabic (

                    @Sardar
i summarize (sorry for my english)
the text analyse the appearent contradiction between two set of verses.
the first set says that Allah protects his followers
the second is about killing "prophets".

his final conclusion is about tenses used. that is verses of set two are sayins killing of prophets in a tense meaning the action is still occuring and not finished yet.
So the conclusion is that "rejectors" always tries to kill anbiyas but never succeed.

                    if will add remarks.
1- if we see stories of Lot, Shauib, salih, Noah, ibrahim, Moses we see at the last moment, the nabi and his followers are rescued before Allah punishment comes on rejectors.

2-another remark can be done on word qatala itself traduced by killing. It may be used for "weakening" with eventually death at then end. for example from root qatala we have moqatil that is the fighter/soldier and not the killer. the aim of war is to win and not to kill. Winning can end by getting ennemy surrender without beeing killed.
the word death in amata/maout in arabic. there is another word used in Quran is wafat (kind of ending) used for angels woh end live of humans.
there is also this meaning in dictionnary

that is a women who "taqatallat"/submitted to a man until he fall in love.

so qutila a man can be said about a man weakened by love.

and i finish by saying that "associatiors" (mushrikuns), in a way, are still trying to "kill" Muhammad in the mean "killing" his "message" through invented falsehood.

                    Peace

Qaf-Ta-Lam (ق ت ل) = to kill, put to death, be accused, slay/murder/kill/slaughter, attempt to kill, render person like to one killed, to wage war/combat/battle, to master, contend/fight, deadly, knew a thing thoroughly/well, become acquainted with it.

                      These meanings could help out.
