Is it okay to watch movies that include fictional magic
-
Peace
I realise I like quite a lot of shows that include magic...but it's more fairytale magic (where jinn/ demons are typically not included but the magic is rather regarded as some ability sometimes even natural ability)...
Since magic is forbidden, I do not intend to get near it in real life...
Some Muslims (including Qur'an only ones) say that magic isn't even real because the magicians at the time of Moses fooled the people's eyes....
However, the jinn at the time of Prophet Suleiman could get queen Sheeba's thrown in a few moments...if jinn have the ability to do this then it's not impossible for them to work with humans and do that sort of thing for people calling themselves magicians...I even once saw a guy on a talent show and he was telling the story of how a spirit helps him...for those people saying that jinn cannot move objects, believe me they can...strange things have happened in my life- I've seen evidence...just happened to see it more than once...anyway don't take my word for it...just read the verses about the jinn moving the thrown...
Anyway, I feel a little uneasy watching shows with magic but at the end of the day, I do not practice it and the magic in fairytales is a bit different from what jinn can do with magicians...
I'm so used to watching shows with magic, I grew up watching stuff from Disney...I've always regarded that sort of magic as fiction because things can't appear from thin air, people can't get miniaturized, sparkly glittery light can't just magically appear...

peace Sarah,
Anything, especially things of modern world (which were not existed in prophet's time) and which is not necessary for a good life and you doubt that doing it is not good /God doesn't like it /it is immoral etc., then imho better thing to do is stay away from it/avoid supporting it.
Qur'an says
"And do not follow what you have no knowledge of. Truly, the hearing, the eyesight and the heart/mind, all those will be questioned about it".There are many verses which says the qualities of believers,
e.g.
"Men neither trade nor sale distract/divert them from the remembrance of God and upholding the swalat, and contributing towards purification. They fear a Day when the hearts and sight will be overturned"."...and remember God much so that you may succeed".
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ / Whoever purified had succeeded.
وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهِ فَصَلَّىٰ / And remembered the name of his Lord, so he did swalat.
بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا / Nay! you desire the worldly life. -
Much of Hollywood contains esoteric/occult symbolism, not to mention the outright debauchery and degenerative content of modern films along with the historical origins of filmmaking as a tool for propaganda and psychological suggestion which can influence one's behaviour subconsciously and negatively affect the brain and nervous systems.
A recommended read is "Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television" by Jerry Mander.

Well, people like magic and fantasy for the escapism. It's fiction, so it doesn't really matter. I like supernatural stories but would never believe in them, irl. If you start sacrificing babies to Beelzebub, it could be a problem. Otherwise, it's fine. As for magic in The Quran, i don't read them as literal stories, personally.

Fantasy is good. Imagination, it allows us to explore existence and ourselves. The Point is not to confuse fantasy with facts. That is the point. A person totally deprived of fantasy may become insane. Depending on character each person needs or can benefit more or less from a certain amount of fantasy but total deprivation is a sign of unbalance. There is something wrong.
As said, the only problem is to confuse fantasy with hard reality. Both are needed but each has its own domain and power.
