Layl Al-Qadr (sura 97) and Rhetorical analysis
-
Salam everyone,
Bismillah...I continue the discussion, in this traditionnal month of Ramadan, about an important Sura Surah (97) srat l-qadr.
This is an issue that has been much publicized, without ever being really settled with many conjectures. We only have to open our heart to the last message of God, ask God for his help (we are Nothing!), and meditate..
So, i deliver you the rhetorical analysis of this sura and, maybe, it will give you others Outlook. .
This Surah, like all the Surahs of the Quran, is not isolated and alone.
It is part of the set of six suras 93 to 98 which form a subsection of three sequences, each with two passages (or suras)
93-94
95-96
97-98We will first compare the rhetorical links between Suras 97 and 98.
From a structural point of view, the two suras are built on the basis of a parallelism 97.1-3 // 4-5 and 98.1-5 // 6-8.
Instead of making long speeches, inappropriate in a forum, I will use a color code that will invite my reader to think.Sourate 97
1 Indeed, WE HAVE SENT IT DOWN in the Night of Al-QADR.
2 And what can make you know what is the Night of Al-QADR ?
3 The Night of Al-QADR (is) better than one thousand lunar-months.
4 Come down the angels and the Spirit therein by the permission of their Master for EVERY ORDER.
5 PEACE it (is) until the EMERGENCE OF DAWN.Sourate 98
Part 1 (1-5)
Those who deny among the Familiar of the Written and the polytheists was not untie .
until came to them the proof (al-bAYYInA)A messenger from God reciting leafs prurifed,
In them writtings righteous. (qAYYImA)
(wa m?) And are not divided,
those who have received the written,
(ill?) only after they came to them the proof (al-bAYYInA)(wa m?) And they were not ordered
(ill?) only to serve God
sincere in their faith in Him alone, yielding, and they establish the Salat,
and they give the Zakat,
Such is the way righteous. (AL-qAYYImA)Part 2 (6-
Certainly, those who deny among the Familiar of the Written and the polytheists,
in the fire of Hell, abiding therein
those are the worst of creation.
Certainly, those who are faithful and do beneficial solidarity actions,
they are the best of creation.Their reward, with their Master, will be in the gardens Eden
flow from underneath them the rivers,
abide therein, forever.God will be satisfied with them
and they are satisfied with Him.
That for whoever feared his Master.Sourate 93 (only part 1 (1-5))
By morning-clarity (wA-D-DuhA)
and the night when she was peaceful !He has not left you your Master,
nor did He scorn you.And Indeed (wa la), the life to come will be better for you than this earlier part !
And Indeed (wa la), he will give you, your Master,
and you will be satisfied ! (fA-tarDA)Sourate 1778
Indeed the Qur'an at dawn is witnessed
------- How to translate the word "Al-Qadr" ? ----------
Layl Al-Qadr is the night of the Order/Decree
Layl Al-Qadr is the night of the Value/Measure
Layl Al-Qadr is the night of the Determination
Layl Al-Qadr is the night of the Destiny
------- How to understand the word "Night" ? ----------
Literal sense A night where order(s) come down to the prophet.
Figurative sense The light come down (Prophet/Quran) in a period of darkness as dawn comes to illuminate the dark night of its brilliance. And the struggle continues (perseverance) until ALL the night is gone.
Peace be upon you and God send you His grace.

Please read with first frame of Chapter 44.
441-16Yes it confirms...I already done the rhetorical analysis of this sura.
I canno't put all clear-signs (word "Ayat". Like all 33 last suras...For the most part it d?pends on God if your heart wants to see/meditate or not. -
Salam everyone,
Just few comments on the rhetorical links between Suras 97 and 98.
At the beginning of the 2 suras, the terms, close to meaning, "WE HAVE SENT IT DOWN" (971) and "until CAME to them the proof" (98,1b) are in symmetry.
The member (98,1b) can also enlighten the final enigmatic of S. 97 "PEACE it (is) UNTIL(hatt?) the EMERGENCE OF DAWN ". The deniers were not untie from their observances (they were in peace) "UNTIL(hatt?) came to them the Proof (Muhammad)" which put them in front of a collective choice, which divided them.
With regard to the turn of the obscure phrase, by its concision, in (97,4b) "for all ORDER" (root 'MR' can be illustrated by its comparison with v. 98.5, which develops what was "ORDAINED" (same root 'MR' to men to serve God, yielding to him, to establish salat (to maintain the beneficial proximity relationship with him) and to give Zak?t (to take part in disinterested way to improvement on Earth).
In conclusion, rhetorical analysis makes it possible to understand this sura 97 in the light of the following (S. 9, to which it is structurally linked. Thus understood, there is no doubt that the S. 97 signifies the gift of the Qur'anic revelation.
And again God gives us a lesson in Qur'anic grammar. The resolution of the understanding of the pronoun in the expression "anzalnhu" (See below) finds its answer only in the rhetorical analysis and the establishment of links between Sura 97 and 98. Meditation and intratextual analysis prevails
(9712) => anzalnhu - "revealed it"
V ? 1st person plural (form IV) perfect verb
PRON ? subject pronoun Allah
PRON ? 3rd person masculine singular object pronoun QuranPeace

It is a fact that Our Majesty had compositely sent it (Qur?n) during the Night of the Apportionment .
Those among the People of the Book and the Polytheists/Idol Worshipers who had refused to accept, could not possibly incline themselves to alienate/separate/depart from long held notions/ ways/legacy/myths/tradition ?

Until the explicitly explicative - eye opening argument reached to them ?
Verb and its subject both are feminine.

Please can you stop to pollute my thread and let people to meditate on my thread seriously with the desire to understand my quranic evidences
You do not try to understand the arguments put forward but to impose your vision (interpretation of the Koran).- "it (quran) = how do you know ? I put proofs..
- "Night of the Apportionment " => Wich evidence from quran ? etc..
Put your own thread.
Ok we know your website. Thanks.

Where is the proof dear? You are equating masculine with feminine while Qur'an says they are NEVER same. Move with acceptable logic.
-
Are you serious dear ?
The word Quran doesn't appears in s. 97 or 98. But god gives us signs to understand.
Quran = a clear proof for people, a messenger from God reciting leafs prurifed, In them writtings righteous. In 2185 the Quran (masculine and singular), a guidance for mankind and clear proofs (feminine and plural)...
Circumstantial clause. What it contains and serves. It does not mean "he" will become "she" or a "she" will become a "he".
Some study is needed also for Anaphora resolution.
The month of Ramadan is the month during which the Qur?n was compositely sent (to the chosen sincere allegiant Muhammad on appointing-assigning him the responsibility of the final Universal Messenger-Spokesperson) ?
It (Qur?n) serves as guidance for the Mankind ?
And distinctly self explanatory verbal passages were gradually communicated from the miscellany of Al-Huda'a the Guide (Qur?n) and Al-Furqau'n the Criterion; the Separator of right from wrong, fact from falsity-conjecture.

Salam everyone,
When i gave, in the first post, four definitions of the "The night of al-qadr" i hope you understood that i just want to show you how these 4 definitions (that we find in differents translations) is indirectly included in this expression.
Now if i have to translate the word "Al-QADR", below my definition
- Linguistic
Qadr as a noun of the verbal root qadara connotes only the notions of strength, power, capacity.
Confirm by quran...
- Rhetoric analysis (with main principle of symmetry/zawj)
(A) Indeed, WE HAVE SENT IT DOWN in the Night of Al-QADR.
(X) And what can make you know what is the Night of Al-QADR ?
(B) The Night of Al-QADR (is) better than one thousand lunar-months.
(B' Come down the angels and the Spirit therein,
by (the) permission (of) their Master (responsible of evolution),
For EVERY ORDER.
(A') PEACE it (is) until the EMERGENCE OF DAWN.=> the answer of the question in (X) (center of the first part) is given at the first edge of the second part (B'). (fourth law of Lund https//fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rh?torique_s?mitique#Les_lois_de_Lund)
And at the center of (B') (in blue above) we have the notion of "almighty power"- Conclusion
Laylat al-qadr = the night of the (almighty) power (in it come down the angels and the Spirit for every order)

Salam to All,
Hope all are well with brothers and sisters. I was about to open a new thread with a question then I saw this thread. My question why did Allah say this night better than 1000 months. Is there a reason for why this particular night is better?. Secondly I don't see where it's upon us to seek this special night. Thirdly is this a recurring night every year.
God bless you all

salaam,
Quote from article http//islam-and-muslims.com/timing.html
Why is the night of measure better than a thousand "shahr"/full moons?
Perhaps one of the reasons is because there are two lights during the night of measure 1) the light brought by the great reading being sent down (515, 4174, 7157, 4252, 3346) and 2) the light of the full moon (105, 2561). Indeed, one of the lessons to be learned from the great reading is that a night of enlightenment is better than a life-time of ignorance.

Salam,
Please read the first post of this thread you will have answers to meditate. Go is clear in the quran and rhetorical analysis must to help you.
My question why did Allah say this night better than 1000 months.
Is there a reason for why this particular night is better? This night is better than a thousand lunar months of this ordinary life (a thousand lunar month = a full busy life for people of the 7th century ; around 80 solar years) because the next life (akhira) must be preferred to this worldly-close life (Dounia - a lot of reference in the quran). And, to have a good life in life after (S. 9, you must follow the commandments received that night (S. 9 and transmitted by the messenger Muhhamad.
After these orders are revealed to you, you have to DETERMINE yourself to accept it in your heart (faith AND actions). Your DESTINY depends on this choice. Time is short ! That's why this night has a GREAT VALUE.
Not the night in essence, but because orders from god came down to you by means of the "rasul" ( messenger - physically die (peace be upon him as all the messengers) since more than 1400 years but the god's message is alive !)Secondly I don't see where it's upon us to seek this special night.
YES you are right.
It is past.
(9712) - anzalnhu - "revealed (came down) it" -
Verb ? 1st person plural (form IV) perfect verb
No magic night.
But you have these orders tramsitted by Muhammad via Al-Quran
All day-night must be special for a true beliver.Thirdly is this a recurring night every year.
NO. Look at my answers above.
God bless you too. Thanks.

God bless you allSalam centi50,
Good question. And thank you to make a post in relationship with the theme of this thread Laylat al-qadr AND rhetoric analysis (and not conjecture).
I need more meditation ! and i don't know if the answer is clearly and really in the quran (so perhaps not so important..)
Only twice does god speak of a PHYSICAL meeting (with eyes) at dawn with a rasul in sura 53 and 81 (gabriel?) and something was revealed at that moment (5310 "He then revealed to His servant what was revealed". Is it that night? For me, right now, there is 2 phenomenon
- Quran as a "THE CALL-ORDER" of God That we can find in surah 98
"
And they were not ordered
(ill?) only to serve God
sincere in their faith in Him alone, yielding,
and they establish the Salat,
and they give the Zakat,
"
(9712) - anzalnhu => Verb perfect (already happen at the moment he is speaking)-
Quran as "THE RECITATION" (during about 23 years), in wich we can find "THE CALL-ORDER", that we can also find in surah 98
"
A messenger from God reciting leafs prurifed,
In them writtings righteous.
"

The Arabic root qara'a whose word al-qur'?n derives means to gather and, hence, to recite, it is in this sense to gather scattered elements in his memory or by the elocution. We find this root in different Semitic languages.
So Most common acceptance
- Recitation
- Call, shout, make a loud sound
- Convoke, invite, call and ordain, appoint, call and endow
- Proclaim
- Read aloud, read
In addition, there is a use of the fa'l?n verbal scheme which expresses an intensive Extreme-Call, Extreme-Recitation etc...

Salam,
Thanks centi50 and Mazhar for your remarks or comments. After more reflection I would like to precise my answer with the Quran of course.
As i said, surah 97 is part of the set of six suras 93 to 98 which form a subsection of three sequences, each with two passages (or suras)
93-94
95-96
97-98
The theme of this subsection is the prophet in crisisSurah 97 and 98 form a pair and i showed the link between them and the beginning of this subsection (s. 93).
Now we are going to have a look with the s.96 witch is also linked to s.97The question is what is the reference of the pronoun "hu" in the word "anzalnāhu" (came IT down) ?
First, for memory, some quranic grammar about this word
V – 1st person plural (form IV) perfect verb
PRON – subject pronoun
PRON – 3rd person masculine singular object pronounGod gives us the answer in the same surah in 974 => amrin (order/affair),
Second, what is this order ?
The pronoum "hu" in the beginning (971) suggests to us that the answer is backward, that is, in Surat 96.
It is the order "iq'ra (Call)" (masculine singular imperative verb).
It is the night where muhammed has became a messenger of God who must exhort his people to change their behavior.
this confirms the tradition which sees in the first 5 verses of sura 96 the entry into mission of Muhammad as a messenger (first words of the Qur'anic revelation); except the notion of cave. Then, what is the content of this order ?
2 answers (progressive)
first in (9611- Literal meaning) "Have you seen if he is upon (the) Guidance or-That is he ordered accompanied by the Premunition ?"So, what kind of actions must he take to save himself from hell (986) ?
- the answer is in (985)
" And they were not ordered only to serve/obey God
sincere in their faith in Him alone, yielding,
and they establish the Salat,
and they give the Zakat,
Such is the way righteous.
We can notice that the triliteral root hamza mīm rā (أ م ر) (amr = an order) appears in these 3 surahs 96-97-98..
if we make the connection with the beginning of Surah 44 and Surah 21
443 Indeed, we have sent it down in a night blessed. Surely, We were warning.
444 In it is distincted every order/affair wise.
445 A order/affair from Us. Indeed, We were of those who we sending as mercy from your Master.21107 And not We have sent (past) you but (as) a mercy for the worlds.
982 A messenger from Allah..
2150 And this (is) a Reminder blessed, wich we have revealed.A Messenger is ONLY a message CARRIER. (PASSIVE).
- the answer is in (985)

A Messenger is ONLY a message CARRIER. (PASSIVE).
Well... That would be a postman. A postman is a carrier of messages, internet is also a carrier of message, envoys are carriers or messages, but not merely, thay are also beneficiaries y and agents with knowledge of the content of the messages and committed not only to the carrying of the messages but to its contents, and THAT is most imortant, because in fact they must be living part of the message while they are aleive, otherwise there would not be any need that God tells us int he Qur'an all those stories about his messengers. A great part of the Qur'an are narrations of those life experiences. In fact prohets lives are important for the carrying of the messages. A traitor or a murderer could not bring a divine message.
Messengers are not mere carriers.
Salaam
