Chapter 105
The chapter is talking about companion of the elephant being destroyed.
My question is why were they destroyed. What did they do to be destroyed.
The traditionalist say it was an army of elephant who were on the way to destroy the kaaba. I find it hard to believe how this elephants made the way to kaaba across the terrains and dry lands of this areas
Can someone explain for me this please
God bless all

Here is a explanation by some traditional Islam story tellers
I have zero evidence in my search so far either way.
So for information only, have a lookExplanation of Surah No 105 of Quran AL-FIL (The Elephant)
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
This also is an early Meccan Surah, refers to an event that happened in the year approximately fifty days before the birth of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in the year 570 A.D. This Surah reveals the story of the army of Elephant.
History - At that time Yemen and Najran (South of Arabia) were the good source of business trade. The Arabs used to do the trade between India, Indonesia East Africa and the Roman conquered Estates. They used to use the Sea routes to deliver the goods to Jordan and Egypt and the land routes to Mecca, Jeddah, Tabuk, Egypt and Syria. When the Romans Empire spreaded up to Egypt and Syria, they concentrated to somehow take over the business trade and the benefit from the ArabsIn the year 523 A.D, he Jewish Ruler of Yemen (Zunuvas) oppressed and massacred the mass Christian of Najran for rejecting the Jews Faith. Therefore the Christain Estate of Hanash (Abyssinia) attacked and conquered Yemen with the help of Roman Empire with the pure intension of taking over the Arab trade. And by 523 A.D the whole Yeman came under the Rule of Habash.
Those days Mecca was a good source of trade as well. In Kaba (The Holy Mosque in Mecca) there were idols of gods and goddess and the Arabs from all over Arabia used to go there to perform the Pilgrimage, so the business flourished there.
Abraha was the Governor of Yeman on behalf of the Christian king of Habasha (Abyssinia). When he came fully into power then he started to complete his mission which was to establish the Christianity in the Arab world as well as to take over their trade. Therefore he built a very big Church (named Alkalis) in Sana (the capital of Yemen) against the Kaba of Mecca to spread Christianity as well as to bring the Arab Pilgrims and their trade and wealth to Yeman. He insisted that all the pilgrims should go to Alkalis to perform their pilgrimage. The Quraish who were incharge of Kaba got angry and did some mischief in the Alkalis. This gave a good excuse to Abraha to invade Mecca with the intention to destroy Kaba.
Therefore Abraha to invade intoxicated with power and religious fantism led a big expedition with sixty thousand men and thirteen elephants proceeded towards Mecca to destroy Kaba. Many of the Arab tribes on the way tried to resist them but they were defeated, until his army approached near Mecca, ceased a lot of flocks of cattle's of Quraish in which Abdul Mutallib, the chief of Quraish who was grandfather of Prophet (PBUH) lost 200 of his Camels.
Abraha sent his Messenger to warn the Meccans that he had come to destroy the Kaba.
Then Abdul Mutallib asked his people to take the refuge in the mountains with their wives and children to be safe from the invasion. Then he with the other Quraish Chiefs went to Kaba and cried for help from Rabb (Lord) of the Universe. That time they all forgot to call upon their idol gods.
Then Abraha demanded to see the chief for negotiation, Abdul Mutallib went to him and said that they had no power to fight with them and said that his Rabb would take care of His House of Kaba. But he requested to return his flocks of Camels, which he returned them to him.
Then Abraha proceeded to enter into Mecca. But his elephant named Mahmood became stubborn and refused to go forward. Then Miraculously the army of small birds came with small dry stones in their beaks and in their claws and started throwing at his army which used to melt their bodies and kill them. Same way Abraha with most of his army men got killed. This incident happened at Mohassir which is between Muzdalifa and Mina in Mecca. Abyssinian lost the power in Yeman in 575 AD. Such was the victory given to Meccans miraculously by their Lord. Barely forty years passed to this incident that everyone knew about it and most of them were eye witnesses. Many knew that their Quraish Chiefs asked for help in Kaba from Rabb and not from their idols. The Meccans were so much impressed with this incident that for next few year they worshipped the Rabb Alone.
Therefore Allah reminds them about this incident by revealing this Surah to give two lessons
First is that at time of calamities and difficulties you call your Rabb Only for help and not your false gods and goddesses. That means subconsciously you know that your idol gods have no power, neither they can hear nor see or move. And this incident, so why should you not worship and thank Him Alone, And you really should follow this routine.
Second lesson is that your Rabb is greater and powerful of all. No matter how big army one can collect against Him, he cannot defeat Him. In fact he himself will be defeated and destroyed. Your Rabb is capable to take care of Him own House of Kaba.
GOD bless.

Certain matters in Quran for audience at the time of revelation is well known... I consider this chapter as well...
For us it may be immaterial... But to deny certain claims it may be useful.. Such as hadith claims of Kaaba destruction...
Verses are very clear whoever the companions of Elephant were they were enemies of Allah... And they conspired something that God didn't like and they were destroyed based on that... It was a devastating destruction totally making their ploy in vain..
But claim of Kaaba is meaningless. . Even the widely accepted Kaaba in Makka is just small cube... So we can imagine the size of it in times back... Why one need to come with mighty elephants to destroy a something which is trivial... And by the way.. There seems no opposition against companions of elephant but God only destroys using birds...
Further... Elephants and environment of dessert is not matching at all.. Since we all know elephant doesn't prefer to walk on desert sand... Need loads of water for elephant to beat the scorching heat... As per their claim Yemen to Makka is not an easy road map for even camels just leave elephant aside ...
It can only be a place nearby from where they came to... Just For example from Syria to Petra...
For what reason they came with a ploy is mystry... Only people can make story Now... Coz with Quran verses one can claim anything... If they claim it is only speculations. Nothing else... Truth is not suggestions.. Truth is actual incident which happend... Honestly it is mystry no way of finding its traces...Point to note.. Why leave camels which are abundantly available in Yemen and choose elephant to travel Yemen to Makka. It is like using two wheels for safari dessert instead while you have four wheels. Ridiculous ..

Salaam,
I think this Surah is about the Giants or in the biblical term "Nephilim", and about their destruction. This giant did a lot of damage and killing of humans in the past. The Book of Enoch
Chapter XV-
And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling.
-
Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men, ⌈⌈and⌉⌉ from the holy Watchers is their beginning and primal origin; ⌈they shall be evil spirits on earth, and⌉ evil spirits shall they be called.
-
And the spirits of the giants afflict, oppress, destroy, attack, do battle, and work destruction on the earth, and cause trouble they take no food, ⌈but nevertheless hunger⌉ and thirst, and cause offences. And these spirits shall rise up against the children of men and against the women, because they have proceeded ⌈from them⌉.
I believe that the Quran confirms the previous books.

This post is in reaction to the comment made in bold above.
To understand Sura 105 one must understand the historical context of the Himyar kingdom, the role of the king named Ahraha and refer to the latest archaeological data (notably the representation of elephants in South Arabia, on the road to Mecca).
All this is documented on my site but in French.

As we all know some rare type of elephants do live in some part of semi desert areas in Africa.. But they don't travel on sand dunes of dessert like camels can do with ease..
Are there elephants in Yemen now...
God would have destroyed the people who came with elephants but not elephants.. Verses doesn't say destroyed the elephants.. Buy destroyed the companions... For me whatever hadith or history describes is mere myth

Who is better to describe history in truth than God?
Peace.
God does not speak to babies who know nothing.
He is speaking to responsible people with an history and an anthropological context. And when he takes up the striking and decisive episode of the attack of Abraha in Sura 105 (with its very graphic side to mark the spirits of the notables of the Quraich), the men of that time understood very well what it was about.
It is up to us, 14 centuries later, to make the effort to understand this and to draw lessons from it that will enable us to act better today.

God bless you.12111 "In their history verily there is a lesson for men of understanding. It is not invented story (Hadith) ...... ...."
I don't like invented stories..For me to understand Quran, the same book is enough and rest with reasoning of reality... Why to believe historian which could be either true or false... I don't need tentative things in between truth and false..
First of all did God explain the complete story of companion of elephants in Quran ? No... It seems it is needless in view of God.. So why dig deep to what God in the first place not preferred to reveal? Learn from what is entirely detailed history.. For example Yousuf, Musa, Isa etc etc.. That's history spoken at depth... But for whatever the reason God made it very short... As I said it was contemporary event that audience were well aware... Since audience of Quran at the time of revelation well known to it why to detail it further... But God reminds how powerful He was by destroying them. .. For us after ages at least after more than a millanneum what benefit by just knowing three lines... Quran was revealed to a community in the first place and it was not us.. That is a truth incontrovertible... And not everything in it is for us... Certain matters are directly addressing the community which has no connection to us by any means..
I am not someone who take the quran for such purposes.. That's sheer waste of time... First of all dude find out whether kaba located in Makka is truth... Then address the matter who approached to destroy the Kaaba and God reacted against it...why would God be against companions of elephant whose very purpose was to destroy a place called Kaaba in Makka... Was it any worthy place for God to give hand in protecting it.. For me and why not for most in this forum Kaaba and Makka of modern day has no connection even with First house Ibrahim built.. So what is the use of digging the story of destroying it... First prove that Makka is and was a holy city where masjid Al Haram is located...
That's why I don't believe in history made by human... But I always learn history for knowledge in order for me to understand the best history precisely what is explained in Quran is true...Also brother... Those who invented fabulous hadiths making huge history behind it also not babies .... God doesn't address them... Be sufficed with Quran for salvation... Hats my understanding...
BTW.. I don't know what is written in French... Would you pls explain the cream and the essence of the story. So let me compare with chapter 105 and if I find errors then I will let you know ...

a brief summary below
"
Until very recently, Arab tradition in general, and that based on the Qur'anic narrative in particular, was considered to be largely legendary and therefore without historical foundation. The military expedition of the Ethiopian king Abraha, known as the "Elephant Expedition", against Mecca, which the Qur'an echoes in Sura 105 "The Elephant", was one of those seminal "historical" events, reported by both Arab-Muslim tradition and the Qur'an, that marked the history of Islam, but its authenticity and historicity are still debated.
Although no contemporary text of this event explicitly mentions it, the discovery by the Saudi-French Archaeological Mission in Najrān, Saudi Arabia, in the fall of 2014 and in 2018, of three drawings of elephants and an inscription of the Ethiopian ruler Abraha, lifts for the first time the doubt about this expedition and the presence of ceremonial elephants accompanying the Ethiopian ruler ruling Yemen between 535 and 565 C.E.
"NB
- Sura 105 forms a structural and thematic pair with Sura 106. The two must be linked for a better understanding.
Michel Cuypers (sorry, also a Frenchman) has remarkably described the different levels of structure of the last 33 suras which are relatively small taken independently of each other. When you read each sura back to their different higher organizational sets you will have a better overview with less risk of misinterpretation.
I gave my view brother of a researcher who takes into account the historical, geographical and societal context of the first men who received the primordial text (and all this obviously with a critical mind and with a cross-checking of the sources when it is possible). I just hope you will find some interesting informations from my work.
God bless you.

jkhan have you read the works of Pazuzu?
He was a member here in the forum, he said all the story of the Bible was in southern Arabia specifically Yemen. He was saying the structure of kaaba was not something new but it was find everywhere in Yemen. It's true we have the same structure in Sanaa Yemen in masjid Al kabir Courtyard make a Google search and you will see it
So maybe the raid of Abraha was actually in Yemen. Remember najran and jezan in South Saudi was Yemeni land.

Peace Centi...
I have never heard of pazUz up untill few weeks time.. My Free-minds friend reminded and I saw in Free-minds people were asking where is pazuz... But I have never read what he has written..
If he is having a view as what you say about he must have reason why he said so.. I am glad my friend said pazuz claimed that the earth is stationary...But the thing is for me No... Yemen and Israel has no connection... For me if dead sea of current day is truly the lake of Luth then I strongly believe almost all major prophets including all Israelite and few others and even Muhamed should have been surrounded to this lake area and not far...
If structures like Kaaba is a common seen in Yemen then it proves that this cubical structure called Kaaba is an invention first made in Yemen and spread Upto Macca by another Yemeni .. And nothing we have to take from it relevant to first house made by Ibrahim... That's Yemenis and those idolworship people's invention and their culture and religion ...
BTW.. Has Quran manifesting that Kaaba is a structure and it is first house built by Ibrahim... No chance... Kaaba for me just a rock used for slaughtering animals... Meanwhile meaning of Kaaba in Arabic could be many.
To sum up.. To this date I speculate that sanctuary of masjid Alharam and the first house built inside it is in Current Day Petra.. That makes sense for me.. Remember but only speculation.. Even if i happen to be unaware of the exact place of Masjid Alharam till my last breath it doesn't matter... Coz I don't have anything left to do there for my salvation.. All the purpose of first house and its rituals are over with last prophet..audiebce of Quran well known what is masjid Al Haram and etc.. And for us it's mystry.. . That's my take..Additionally one logical question.... If current day masjid Al haram and Kaaba is the same as of Muhamed's time why original copies of Quran of the same time are not inside this masjid and Kaaba... If they can preserve the Kaaba and masjid from the time of Mohamed to up until now, why they failed to preserve a single book of quran to be inside this masjid fir everyone to see claiming this is the oldest quran. ..strangely they preserved the Kaaba identity but failed to keep the heart of belief (quran) ..

BTW I never agree about Yemen.. Coz as of now it doesn't give any concrete evidences for me ... It is only his speculation.. If he comes for open discussion I in sha Allah present my view against it..

Peace.. Tf
Historical tangible and manifest evidences shows that Syria OR Iraq had elephants... But no evidence whether any of northern Arabian nations had elephants at the time of Mohamed if he lived 1400 years back.. Even Persians used Syrian and probably maha barath elephants for waging wars... Why not, even manifest records shows Romans used elephants though we don't see elephants native to Europe..
But never in history or current day exploration of embedded fossils show that Arabian peninsula had elephants at the time of Isa OR musa OR before..
Sometimes some histories are well preserved within their social identity... I believe the story of elephant also well known to Muhamed and his people as preserved truth among people. . But it may have happened somewhere else or long time back...
If historical evidences are glaring that no Elephants were found in Arabian peninsula OR northern Arabia 1400 years back then it is a question mark to claim elephants did live there.. or that unfortunate incident actually happened there..Further... Iyyaka brought certain history claiming Abraha at the time of Mohamed brought these elephants.. That's a recorded history for him.. At the same time.. Recorded history says before 100 BC elephants of Syria and Iraq were extinct... And Arabian peninsula never had any elephants..
So when did the incident of chapter 105 happen? But it did definitely happen and well familiar to the audience of Quran if not by eyewitness at least by their ancestors well recorded history... But it could be 500 to 1000 years back at the time of Mohamed..It could be even Romans... But all speculation...
Guesswork is not equal to actual truth.. That's what Quran claims. .so why to speculate... Will it ever become truth irrefutable? Each and everyone would have different opinions...
