    Peace centi50,

If you say you're gonna do something serious, meaningful or consequential keep your word. Word is bond.

"Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths" ( self explanatory)

    peace

Let say I am a witness on court and the judge tell me swear you were presented when Hassan attacked Imran. I then swear yes I saw Hassan attacking Imran. But that is not the truth I was not even there to witness the dispute but because Hassan is my friend I lied by swearing.

Now do you get my point.

So what can do to redeem myself

Feed the poor? Or fast 3 days

      God bless all

So many questions for you.. Don't you?... But good questions mostly...

For me I think that according to Quran Oaths are something made in advance for future actions...
But the example you brought about hasan and Imran is kind of giving or being a witness rightfully OR wrongfully...

Coz Oaths are something needs to be preserved if intended while swearing an oath especially in the name of God.. Sheer intent was there.. So it must be guarded.. If failed then one of the above explained expiation should be practiced ..
So verse is clear... If you make an oath like a Solomon promise then accomplish it...
Being an eyewitness and giving a statement is not an oath I presume.. If you give witness and that too false one there is other punishments prescribed in Quran... Hope you get me...

If you are not satisfied you are welcome to raise your concern...

Salam to all brother who took their time responding

Brother jkhan you usually makes things clear. You use simple English which can be understood clearly but I am not saying others are not good. No no I appreciate each and everyone of u who respond to me and jazak Allah khairakum.

I understood you much of it, but I want be sure now. Now u r in a court infront of a judge now

Now we are in court and the judge says to swear by Allah that whatever you say to court is the truth. So the judge tells me, repeat after him, then the judge says to me say "I swear in the name of Allah that whatever I will say is the truth" I then repeat after him clearly knowing I am not going to lie.

Now I have lied in the name of God, will those expiation be valid to me?

Apart from telling lies what punishment is mentioned in Quran for swearing falsehood in Allah name

          God bless all

Thank you... I use simple English coz I know simple English only.. .. If others use advance English then they must be more familiar with this language.. That's all brother...

I understand your concern manifestly.. But apply little more thoughts into it.. ...

What judge says is a formal statement in court... The one who repeats it may or may not be intentional in heart.. Just coz judge says he repeats... No intention most probably... Even judge is not perfect.. He brings the statement just coz he has to perform that part before start of proceedings... So don't take that part... Intention need not be a verbal statement repeating listening to another.. Intention should raised within heart.. That God knows.. Not the judge..

Anyway.. As I said in my earlier thread, Lieing or giving false witness is not an intended oath... Oath is different in my understanding... Just go through all oath words in QURAN if you have time.. That would give you a kind of insight on it..

In the verse 589 itself it says "guard your oath" you can only guard if you intended... If you not intended you won't even remember...

So.. Verse is clear... For example ... If you say to God with intent if I pass the exam I would feed 10 poor people then you must accomplish it.. Failing so is expiation.. If you are a believer you need to follow God's orders... So.. Fulfilling expiation is mandatory for an intended oath in the name of God... It is not equal to just repeating few verses of judge in court where you won't have any intent... Even if you have intent infront of judge I don't think that is equal to self intent in an oath..
            That's all brother..

              Salam,

              Salam to all

              Al-Ma'idah 589

Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find - then a fast of three days . That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be grateful.

Does this verse say people can make false oath and then redeem themselves by feeding 10 poor people or fasting 3 days

This is a misleading statement in this verse, feeding 10 poor people or "fasting" 3 days, or whatever it is, is the punishment (kafara in Arabic in the verse) of making false oath, not a price to pay to get allowed to make false oath.

It is exactly like in our modern world if you drive above the speed limit, you can get a fine.
But it is incorrect to state that you are allowed to drive above the speed limit provided you pay some amount of money.

One can find that the punishment is too light but that's an entirely different problem.

                  Salam bro,

So the punishment of taking and knowingly a false oath is expiation (kafara) in 389?

                  God bless all

                    Salam,

No. In fact, punishment and expiation are two (almost) synonymous words in the context of the some religious beliefs, including that of Qur'an but also Judaism and Christianity.

Expiation (Kafara in Qur'an Arabic, Kipur in Hebrew or Aramaic) views punishment as a path to get redeemed for a sin.

In verse 589, expiation can take one of the following forms

                    • feeding or clothing of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your own families, or
                    • freeing of a slave, or
                    • fast of three days (reserved only for those who cannot opt for the two options above)

Other views of punishment do exist in various communities and societies

                    • compensation of a fault
                    • repair a breach to the social contract (often the view of Western laws)
                    • revenge (often in the context of tribal societies)

                      Salam brother,

This means that one can lie by giving false oath and then expiate, with feeding poor people or fasting.

This is a light punishment, considering that you can easily affect/impact cases and thus causing thulm to the other party who you are giving false against

                      God bless

                        Salam,

the context in this verse is not making a false testimony in a case (today in our modern world, the only real use of oath together with marriage), but breaking a promise previously made in a pledge or a contract ("bima ʿaqqadttumu al-aymana&quot.

You didn't necessarily intend to lie in the first place when you made a promise that you will not fulfill later.
It happened several times for me, I genuinely made a promise I couldn't fulfill, because it turned out to be too much for me.

Whether the punishment provided in Qur'an is too light or too strong in this context, I don't know. The right balance may be not so easy to set.
