    Peace fellow members,

Let me share various verses from the quran about hard times (adversity).

If anyone is going through hard times, they might find strength in these verses.

O YOU who have attained to faith! Seek aid in steadfast patience and prayer for, behold, God is with those who are patient in adversity. 2153

And most certainly shall We try you by means of danger, and hunger, and loss of worldly goods, of lives and of fruits. But give glad tidings unto those who are patient in adversity. 2155

Do you think that you could enter paradise unless God takes cognizance of your having striven hard , and takes cognizance of your having been patient in adversity? 3142

You shall most certainly be tried in your possessions and in your persons; and indeed you shall hear many hurtful things from those to whom revelation was granted before your time, as well as from those who have come to ascribe divinity to other beings beside God. But if you remain patient in adversity and conscious of Him - this, behold, is something to set one's heart upon. 3186

O you who have attained to faith! Be patient in adversity, and vie in patience with one another, and be ever ready , and remain conscious of God, so that you might attain to a happy state! 3200

Moses said unto his people "Turn unto God for aid, and have patience in adversity. Verily, all the earth belongs to God He gives it as a heritage - to such as He wills of His servants; and the future belongs to the God-conscious!" 7128

save those who are patient in adversity and do righteous deeds it is they whom forgiveness of sins awaits, and a great reward. 1111

And be patient in adversity for, verily,. God does not fail to requite the doers of good! 11115

all that is with you is bound to come to an end, whereas that which is with God is everlasting. And most certainly shall We grant unto those who are patient in adversity their reward in accordance with the best that they ever did. 1696

To these We grant twice the reward for that they have been patient. And they counter evil with good, and from Our provisions to them, they give. 2854

Answered he This has been given to me only by virtue of the knowledge that is in me!" Did he not know that God had destroyed many a generation that preceded him - people who were greater than he in power, and richer in what they had amassed? But such as are lost in sin may not be asked about, their sins. And so he went forth before his people in all his pomp; those who cared only for the life of this world would say, Oh, if we but had the like of what Qarun has been given! Verily, with tremendous good fortune is he endowed!" But those who had been granted true knowledge said Woe unto you! Merit in the sight of God is by far the best for any who attains to faith and does what is right but none save the patient in adversity can ever achieve this ." 2878-80

CONSIDER the flight of time! Verily, man is bound to lose himself unless he be of those who attain to faith, and do good works, and enjoin upon one another the keeping to truth, and enjoin upon one another patience in adversity. 1031-3

I don't understand what kind of interpretation are these.... are adversity really mentioned with patience by word?

        Peace jkhan,

The verses in the OP seem to be about adversity, irrespective of the meanings of the arabic words (in those verses) which are derived from the root Sad-Ba-Ra. I have used the translation of Muhammad Asad in the OP. The words (which are derived from the root Sad-Ba-Ra) in all the verses in the OP have been translated as "patient", "patient in adversity" and "patience in adversity".

"Adversity" isn't mentioned with the word "patient" in a word by word translation. Nevertheless, the verses in the OP seem to be about adversity (hard times).
Case in point These two verses in the OP seem to be about adversity (hard times).

And most certainly shall We try you by means of danger, and hunger, and loss of worldly goods, of lives and of fruits. But give glad tidings unto those who are (alsabireena) patient in adversity. 2155

You shall most certainly be tried in your possessions and in your persons; and indeed you shall hear many hurtful things from those to whom revelation was granted before your time, as well as from those who have come to ascribe divinity to other beings beside God. But if you remain (tasbiru) patient in adversity and conscious of Him - this, behold, is something to set one's heart upon. 3186

In conclusion, if anyone is going through hard times, they might find strength in the verses that have been mentioned in this post and in the OP.

PS, the words which are derived from the root Sad-Ba-Ra (in the verses in the OP) are commonly translated as patience. But they imply different shades of meaning, such as persistence, perseverance, etc.

In his translation of the quran (QXP), Shabbir Ahmed, with regard to Glossary (terminology), argues that the arabic word Sabr has these meanings

Sabr = Patience = Facing adversity with courage = Steadfastness = Resolve = Perseverance in hardship as well as ease.

          Peace...

Definition and meaning of patience is more than enough to get the exact interpretation of those verses.. Being patient in adversity is a great effort a human can do.. But applying patience not only in adversity... Try to grasp that within life...
Anyway perseverance or persistence or steadfastness they are different to patience ... You need to apply patience to be steadfast or persevere..
Anyway.. I do t like to drag this..
God has used a word and it's meaning is manifest..
          Thank you.. .

In my journey one surah stood out and was very personal to me. I've always known that Allah is being personal,
but some ayahs are more personal than others. For me it was surah 93 that turned my life around.

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

            By the forenoon.

By the night as it falls.

Your Lord never abandoned you, nor did He forget. (I was a Christian who no longer believed. I felt lost and saddened)

The Hereafter is far better for you than this first (life). (Then I realized that Just relying on God would be enough to guide me on my eternal journey.)

And your Lord will give you enough; you will be pleased. (When I read this my determination was revised.)

Did He not find you orphaned and He gave you a home? Yes, (I am an orphan, both my parents died before I was 12.)

He found you astray, and guided you. (Astray indeed, hung out with the wrong people)

He found you poor, and made you rich. (Now I am financially stable with enough wealth to help others.)

Therefore, you shall not forsake the orphan. (I would never do such a thing)

Nor shall you reprimand the beggar. (I would never do such a thing)

You shall proclaim the blessing your Lord has bestowed upon you. (By the grace of my lord I teach and preach righteousness)

            God Bless peace

Qoran/scripture/revelation is a life line for believers.
Does each one wishes to receive a personal revelation from GOD ,our creator/father?
Well GOD has done that in a very special way. His revelation is personal and special for each one of us.
God has sent us a life-line that we need to appreciate and use.

Those who believe in GOD, and hold fast to Him, He will admit them into mercy from Him, and grace, and will guide them to Him in a straight path.

In a way, without GOD, we are orphans. We need Him to look after us and guide us He is the ever living father to all of us humans
GOD is there for us as a way of getting help, that we depend on to lead our life in a satisfactory way,

There are so many beautiful verses in Quran that we can use and appreciate because they lift us from despair. and heal our soul.

Your Lord says, “Implore Me, and I will respond to you..."
                GOD bless you all.
                Peace.

Slight different view but on the same topic. Many folks get the same sort of peace in soul from following other scriptures, way of life, religion. Some even follow self preservation from simply observing the physical life (time space matter) and not bother about soul or spiritual. In the end result is same tranquility devotion peaceful existence,

Hence where do we draw the lines. Are we to say all those folks have achieved enlightenment and they look inside vs outside? Even those who visit temples and follow Polytheism? Are all same... because if the end result is inner peace and all that.. it is there too….

Hence what does the creator wants.? Will he judge the path through which one achieve total satisfaction in this life? Say for example many verses in Quran talks about God’s wrath on this who associate partners in his kingdom?.

So a Muslim apparently living a life of hell (worldly affairs) yet does believe in oneness of god vs a Hindu for example living a peaceful life yet associating partners with GOD. Who will have the final say..?

                      People are of various type...
If they find inner peace by visiting shrines it churches or temple or being alone etc. That's their choice. But according God's law inner peace is not what we want but salvation... If those who rejects God and those who associate God feel they have inner peace.. That's fine. It their saying.. No one knows where they have inner peace... Only self...
Way of God won't give us inner peace but He will keep testing us and He definitely test calmness of life... What is inner peace by the way fusion in your understanding and experience ?
You needed peace last time you called me.. Hope you have achieved it. But what is inner peace as you say peace in soul?

Hell of life and still believe in oneness of God? What does that mean?

                        Peace hawk99, and fellow members

Thank you for sharing your story hawk. Your story is indeed uplifting and a reminder to all of us to keep going no matter how hard the going gets. In the words of actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, "Persistence pays off."

The one thing that a lot of members seem to have in common in this forum is that they went through adversity and overcame it with the help/support and guidance of the creator. All praise is due to the God. The adversity that we go through and the sacrifices we make give us strength and pave the way for opportunity. Furthermore, it helps us to not take things for granted. Lastly, it helps us to remain thankful/grateful and humble for what we have in life.

Let's never forget that there is always some light at the end of the tunnel.

                            Peace hawk99,

I am grateful for your reply. I have had the same experience as you.

                              Peace,

Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?
But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.

                              God bless peace
