Was the Quran revealed orally in writing?
-
Peace jkhan.
Another question needs to be answered regarding the Arabic script history about the writing of texts during Qoran being revealed and the changes that took place after it.
For example How can one distinguish the different letters before the changes?Ba, tha, ... Or ha, kha, or saad, daad...etc without the dots they are the same.
From my research, I pose another question
Was the Qoran revealed/taught to the messenger in both, speech and writing? Oral and writing both inspired. The mathematical composition confirms this in the position of the letters in the text..It is not a coincidence the letters of the alphabet are in numerical order. So the numerical value and position of the letters in the Arabic alphabet have not changed., even some argue differently..
Useful topic to research and pursue.
GOD bless you.

And thank you so much for stepping into this topic and hope I can get some knowledge from your understanding as well to unearth the exact truth ..
I wish you bring any Quranic verses for your understanding be it oral or written... Any Quranic verse which constantly urge you to feel that it is revealed in a manner that you understand...
Pls..BTW.. We all know Torah is not a complete bool revealed to Musa alone.. Remembeing that in mind, what about verse 7145 and 7154...
I do really take these two verses to come to conclusion that Musa didn't write on the tablets but it was written and came down to him 7145 is well supported by 7154 ... yeah people can take it in a way they prefer but if one apply all words carefully you will realize that whatever these tablets are made of it was directly sent down to Musa perfectly written... Any negation on this issue is welcome in order for me to present what I know about these verses.. -
Peace jkhan.
Qoran indicates that the messenger was writing down the verses as soon as he received them, both inspired
29;48-49
You did not read the previous scriptures, nor did you write them with your hand. In that case, the rejectors would have had reason to harbor doubts.

Thank you so much..
Yes brother.. I have read these verses and reflected a lot to conclude whether these verse could bring me closer to the truth that it was revealed orally or written down.. But not after comprehension on that.. These verses definitely prove mohamed was literate person.. But it doesn't prove he wrote the Quran while it was revealed .do they?
2948-49 is a proof that Mohamed is well versed in the language of previous scriptures as well.. But he was not someone who copied original book of theirs and wrote it or even read them regularly .. Torah and Injeel are books and whoever wants a copy of them could approach to original book and gradually write down copying as it is so that he also have a copy of it... Isn't it? Mohamed was not someone like that either ...255-6 also proves mohamed was a literate person.. Coz his own people will never lie on an obvious thing.. That's why they said mohamed wrote it down and it was dictated... They spoke the truth about the ability of Mohamed that he was a literate person and they knew him.. On the other hand they assumed that he wrote it down and it was dictated to him as if they saw... How they know it was dictated to him and he wrote down... That's their assumption..isn't it? It won't prove that it is the way Quran was revealed.. Note the immediate reply of Mohamed which was instructed by Allah to say.. "It was sent down" denying dictating and writing down claim..
And the other verses.. Don't move your toung.... It is We who collect.. This proves that whatever revealed is with Mohamed and it is not in order.. So Allah brings them in order after all to make it a Quran readable in precise order..
It seems Mohamed received written pages either in chapter or pages of verses depends on the length of chapter and mohamed kept them preserving.. And these revelations mohamed read them out to believers / disbelievers and people of previous scriptures ..As everyone says the first verse ever revealed is chapter 96 .. Read.. it starts.. For me.. You can only read what is written already.. .. If the first verse of chapter 96 is not part of Quran then I can deduce perhaps Jibreal would have said "read in name of your Lord who creates".. Then mohamed read.. But that clause itself a verse.. Written pages came down and mohamed read them and delivered the same to people.. What prevents Allah from sending down in writing?
Mohamed was literate person... But why he should write them down when it is being revealed.. Yes he might have written down once Quran is complete book for the purposes it covers but why while it was revealing? Is oral message strong or written message?.
Thank you...

982 A Messenger from Allah , reciting purified pages / sheets (suhuf).
What about above verse brother GL..
Have you ever explored what indeed suhuf means in Quran? Explore suhuf in Quran perhaps ui our will Knkw that it has a point to prove.
Messwnger recites many times comes but I don't see messenger writes verses anywhere.. Is there? -
Peace jkhan.
For me 982 is not talking about Mohammed.. It is a different messenger coming after him.WHY?
9{2-5
Those who disbelieved among the people of the scripture, as well as the idol worshipers- of the false Islam-, insist on their ways, despite the proof given to them.*

Oh.. I didn't know about that... If in case it is not referring to the Messenger of Quran then we can keep away that verse for the research purpoae ... But don't you think that Allah could have said instead of suhuf, book or Quran if it is talking about a future messenger? Like reciting purified book or purified Quran..
Addition... Well I went through the verses of chapter 98 to find out whether it talks about future messenger or Prophet Mohamed himself.. After thoroughly capturing the chapter I think it is not talking about future messenger.. Yes.. I do believe in numeric patten but this chapter has no connection with future Messenger.. The reason is verses one after another doesn't befit for that..
Coz until the evidence (bayyina) was revealed they the people of scripture were fine.. It states but after bayyina is the issue... So... It doesn't quite tell the story of modern era... Anyway this is a different topic entirely.. I don't want to bring that here and blend... I don't see any Messenger in modern era came and yo people to establish Salat and give Zakath... That's another matter...
But anyways... I have different view on this understanding.. I mean taking it as a new messenger reciting purified pages.. ButI still like to go with Mohamed not coz of this topic but chapter seems it is Messenger of Quran.. Sorry.. Not willing to extend this topic to numeric phenomena here..Let's work out how Quran was revealed...orally OR in writing..?
In case you are convinced that it was revealed orally then written down, please succor that with an Inevitable verse in order for me to reflect.. Perhaps you might have seen verses in relation to it which I couldn't see...
Thank you -
Salam brothers!
This topic is interesting and I want to point out the below ayats for further pondering
And if we had revealed upon you a book in parchment then surely they (could) touch it with their hands thus disbelievers could say (that) "indeed it is but magic clear!"The word قرطاس is translated as "parchment", "book written", "written scripture", "book on paper", "book on parchment" and "a writing on paper" etc.
Literal meanings of the root word Qaf-Ra-Tay-Siin = to shoot, take aim, hit the mark, perish. qirtas (pl. qaratis) - parchment, what one writes upon, sheet of paper, scroll of paper, writing, book, skin used as targetThe above ayah shows that the Quran was not revealed in written form.
Then there is another ayah which states that disbelievers did not want to believe in prophet until/unless the revelation of a "readable" book. حَتَّىٰ تُنَزِّلَ عَلَيْنَا كِتَٰبًۭا نَّقْرَؤُهُۥ
And Allah in various ayahs has asked the prophet to SAY قُل (to them) otherwise, He could have ordered him to SHOW them the ayats or READ OUT the ayats of the book (either written by you OR sent down to you in written form).
If we refer to 255-6, i think the disbelievers' accusations and mocking were based on their arrogance and prejudice rather than any rational assessment of the Quran's content or form of revelation.
So, by considering all relevant Quranic Ayats, I am with the view that the prophet did not write down the ayats/Quran immediately at the time of revelation but he memorized the ayats/Quran. Quran was written down by him or his companions at some later stages i.e., when the whole Quran had been revealed.
Peace!

Thank you so much for entering into this topic and showing interest.. All I need to uncover truth with the assistance of you all.. But as of now my mind is leaning towards written form as you can see with my threads.. But I am hunting truth... Coz I am not sure and not convinced at all...
Yes.. brother.. Whenever I read the word Karadasi I was wondering how this is possible.. In my country two languages only in both the languages paper is called kadathasi.. Any paper even empty paper. Not newspaper though.. Having said that... I considered these two verses also in my research but not convinced to take as evidence that it was revealed verbally... These two verses literally speak they want a book a complete book sent down all at once so that they can touch and perceive it.. But it is not the sunnah of Allah. God sends according to situations... But it doesn't mean verbally.. Whatever Allah sends could be even in writing... If complete written book was sent down all once, then no point of messenger... That's agaisnt the sunna of God who has three ways of communicating to people.
Relevant to Qul.. Yes.. It is an order to tell to particular people or in general depend on the context of the verses..
You know why I took some verses of Salah verses in Quran as Quran revealing /repeating Session is coz Quran should be revealed to that community methodically... Suppose chapter kafiroon.. It may refer kafir.. Messwnger should approach in his community kafir and reveal what was revealed coz it was connect to them.. Coz it addresses O Deniers.. So lively... But this verse should be revealed as well for all of believers as well.. And to people of the book. So Quran revealing session is imperative to reveal / repeat QURAN delivery.. So reading / reciting do take place in Salah so people come to know what exactly has revealed... Suppose you were part of that community and you must be willing to know from time to time what is revealed so you are thorough about all what was revealed though you not remember all but at least have heard.. So Qul is just God's instruction even it came in writing or verbal it won't make any difference... Suppose.. We as people who believe in God do take this Qul verses in life.. Last two chapters for example.. Qul auzu birabbinas and birabbifalaq.. So.. Literally we better recite these two chapters as a dua without Qul.. So it becomes a dua / supplication etc.. So Qul not represent verbal revelation.. That's my point..Thank you

Salam Jkhan!
Let's take the word Qul and see that it has occurred as a whole word at 298 places/ayats in Quran. Most of the time, it is used as a command to the prophet whenever the disbelievers or munfiqun or others asked the prophet about something and we come to know that the prophet did not (or commanded to) hand over a palmphlet/parchment/bone/leaf/paper/skin/scroll/document with Quran revelation written on it to the people so that they can see for themselves what has been revealed. Instead of that God tells the prophet to tell those people what Allah wants them to know i.e., what Allah intend to reveal. You can find all these ayats easily, I hope.
On the other hand! When people of the book insisted on something or claimed something, the prophet is commanded to ask them to bring their SOLID/Material evidence in shape of the book, the torah, or a similar surah etc. as in
Since we are able to see this pattern or practice in almost whole of the Quran, I can understand that Surahs 113 and 114 which even/although have no context of a question being asked but still a command to the prophet in order to convey the revelation to the listener(s). That is my point.
(However, I agree that these surahs can become Dua if we skip the word Qul. Perhaps these Duas were given to the prophet upon his own questioning or requests for protection towards God, personally.)Extra NOTE I personally am with the view that these Surahs were revealed as a supplication for the prophet and others who recite the Quran and in support of this view I refer to this ayah
فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ
My Translation So when you have recited the Quran then seek refuge with Allah from the Shaitan, the ever conjecturing (one). This translation tells that supplications seeking God's refuge should be recited when the Quran has been read and not in the beginning of recitation. On the other hand, Surah 109 seems different than Surahs 113 & 114 as it does not become a Dua if we skip the word Qul. Rather it becomes an announcement or disclaimer.
Peace!

Thank you again...
Salam..
I understand your stance but you have little confused in my perception... All Qul is not for prophet... Very few.. Just a reminder..Qul has many representation.. Just read verse by verse.. Quran is not a debate session so messenger involve in an argument and Allah immediately respond.. But it is beyond that.. Look at it in broader perspective..
But it is a reply from Allah to those who already challenged or questioned..messenger doesn't need to go after each and everyone and reply.. Honestly reading out verses revealed is more than enough.. Deliver the message.. So they get responded to their questions if they follow hear the message...
They ask you.. Say.. It doesn't mean messenger replies to them like in a constant conversation..
Just read all Qul verses one by one and reflect .... This Qul /say is totally different to what most think..It's not command like you say to Mohamed.. For example
"Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "The signs are only with Allah , and I am only a clear warner."
It doesn't mean Mohamed was on a conversation with them and immediately God reveals to say/qul..most of the time they may not even had conversation with Mohamed but Allah knows what they say.. So Allah replies.. Say/Qul.. With reply.. Messenger simply reads out.. Whoever questioned such will get his response when he hears the recitation..
Don't ever compare quran revelation in a manner like that.. It is not like that.. If Allah is revealing a command in a live area.. It's okay.. Coz Allah is the initiator. For example.. Musa's people were told by Allah Lord commands to slaughter a cow.. So the conversation continues.. Allah initiates.. Then fine.. But not for people initiates.. God replies and let them listen when it is recited..
Just read all Qul verses you get a better picture than I explained..
I don't want to deviate from the topic.. Let's stick to topic.. So we can find some conclusive evidences.. -
7145 And We WROTE for HIM on the TABLETS of all things - instruction and explanation for all things, "Take them with determination and enjoin/command your people to take the best of it. I will show you the home of the defiantly disobedient."
7154 And when the anger subsided in Musa, he took back the TABLETS; and in THEIR INSCRIPTION was guidance and mercy for those who are fearful of their Lord.
Carefully note above two verses. It says WE WROTE for him... one would say KathabNa here doesn't mean We wrote, but it means we enjoined.. But why I took WE WROTE is, word HIM /LaHu.. If taken as we enjoined then for him is never ideal here. Coz enjoinement is not for Musa alone.. But wrote is correct coz it was wrote for Him only so that musa would go and enjoin others, coz he was the messenger and that's whybnkt was written for him not enjoined for him..
Then the other verse connected to Tablets is 7154 .. It says Musa took the tablets he threw down IN THEIR INSCRIPTION / TRANSCRIPTION is guidance.. So it glaringly proves that tablets were not written by Musa but it was written already and given to Musa.. Strangley it was not stated IN THEIR WRITING but it is stated IN THEIR INSCRIPTION instead..
It has no evidence to substantiate that Musa wrote on the empty tablets .. nothing even to take a clue.. But all evidence is in support of written tablets..
Any comments for and against pls..Thank you.. Peace..

Salam Jkhan!
I may agree with your insight or not but I will like to point out one simple thing that you are confusing Musa's Al-Kitab with Al-Quran while these both are totally different in regards to the form of revelation. Musa's Tablets were with him but Al-Quran is in one well-protected Tablet لوح محفوظ, which might be in written form.
Further, if Musa's Al-Kitab was only WRITTEN/ENJOINED for MUSA ONLY then why THE BEST OF IT was enjoined on HIS PEOPLE? Think!
Further, let's check the difference of meanings of قول and قرا
Qaf-Waw-Lam = to say/speak, to call, to be named, word/speech, utterance, a thing said, greeting, discourse, one who says/speaks. qa'ilun - speaker, indicator.
ق ر ا = Qaf-Ra-Alif = to recite/read, compilation, collection, reading, recitation, explanation, study, investigation.
"To speak or say or utter" can never be "to read or study or investigate" until and unless you have your own will to see it in that way!
Peace!

I humbly suggest you to open a topic "Qul in Quran".. In sha Allah I will also involve. There is lot to learn on that and most do not know about it.. It is a big topic.. We can discuss every verse of Qul... This is a different topic here..
But let me respond to what you have said above.. Allah sent down all revelations same way way.. His sunna is not different.. He communicates only in three Ways.
It was not for Musa only brother.. Why not understand what I wrote.. We WROTE for him doesnt mean ONLY MUSA.. for example Allah uses We SENT down to you (singular).. Does that mean only to him the law and instructions? No.. But of course sent down only to him.. Similarly it was written only to Musa coz he was the Messenger.. But read the verse.. Then it says.. Enjoin them (people) with what is written in it.. It is guidance and mercy for those people including Musa.. Just expand your thoughts brother and don't restrict.. After thoroughly comprehending question others, and don't rush with questions whatever comes to mind..
Suppose if you give me 1k USD and said.. 'I give you this money, and spend for yourself and family' .. Reflect.. Money was given to me ONLY not to family.. But purpoae is not only for me but for my family as well..
Allah wrote the tablets for Musa but whatever written in tablets is not merely for Musa... Come on brother.. Comprehend.. Quran is not a book to rush but seek guidance..
I definitely advise you. Open a topic on Qul.. There is lot you will learn and people will learn and I will learn.. Coz this Qul is not same as you think.. If you don't like to open.. Just read all Qul verses with intent.. And reflect. Delivering the message is enough and that's duty of messenger.. It means reading out the verses of Allah. Nothing else. Let the message reach them and let them reflect. Perhaps their questions and concerns and claims and challenges etc is answered by Allah..Isn't this enough for them that the verses of Allah are recited to them..
That's how Quran questions.. It means Messenger only recites let listeners listen silently and reflect..
Debate is different and revelation of Quran or any God's book is different.. All messengers just reading out verses to masses and let them ponder..
Qul is not a separate command of God. But it is part of the verse.. Even if verses are without Qul, Messengers have to read out the verses..
On top of that,, Quran is not only for Messenger but for all. This Qul is for all believers.. After Messnger's demise this Qul not gonna be void and null. You will never get me I am sure.. . Just read all Qul verses separately and reflect what each Qul verse represents.. Then you will in sha Allah definitely have an idea what I communicated to you..
Yes.. Qul is say.. It doesn't mean go and tell to another person outright.. Ponder pls. Is reading out the budget by finance minister in parliament looks like to you that he talks to himself or talking / Saying to the nation..
Readung the Quran by the messenger means delivering / talking / saying to people the message..Thank you..

@ TMTT..
I got a private message and it is interesting and not against grammar or logic..
What he said is.. Qul / say can be taken in this way as well.. Like Allah is telling / directing to some people "answer / say" to me... It's like "Answer Me".. He gave example of 291 .. In fact he is right.. It is indeed possible..So brother people have their view. In my view that's an excellent point.. Qul = Answer Me / Say Me.. Yes Me is not worded but not necessary everytime.. Isn't it..
For example.. Did you beat her? Say! It means God can use this Qul in any way He wants.. -
Salam brother jkhan!
You can change "answer me" to just "answer" or to "answer them", it is up to you.
Coming to the actual topic, I see that in Quran Allah demands solid/material proof from people who claim anything but in case of the prophet, He just asks/commands the prophet to "Say/Tell/Answer" them without ordering him to "show/present" them the WRITTEN BOOK or solid evidence.
If there existed a WRITTEN BOOK with the propthet then it must have been explicitly mentioned in Quran. This is my major point and hope you can understand this simple point!Peace!
