Did the women really cut their hands when the saw prophet Yusuf
-
Salam to all
1231 So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared a banquet for them, and she gave each one of them a knife. And she said "Come out to them," so when they saw him they exalted him and cut their hands, and they said "Praise be to God, this is not a human being, but a blessed angel!"
Can anyone please explain this verse. Did the women who saw Yusuf really cut their hands with knives. I find it hard to believe that these women literally cut their hands .
Please can anyone explain these verse
God bless you all

I take it as they were so bewitched by him that they inadvertently cut their hands while preparing/eating food with their utensils, which in this case was a knife, or held it too tight and cut themselves or something like that.

Yes.. Your concern obviously justified Centi50... They never cut their hands.. And they were not even given knives.. They all will never cut their beautiful hands..
Let me elaborate my understanding of the verses with extreme logic and within Quran grammar and words.. First ensure you understood the verse 1230 and it is pivotal.. Wife of Azeez's character is at stake among possibly her friends in the city. They blamed her that she is seducing the young man under her.. In fact she did. But she is not willing to accept their allegation and she knew that these women also vulnerable towards Yousuf. So she planned a mightly plan in order she can shut their mouths forever and freely approach Yousuf..Then concentrate on verse 1231... No knife was given to each and every woman.. That's super weird.. They(women/friends) were invited for a banquet and everyone was given accommodation as well. Sikan here is accommodation so that they can stay there for few days in order to justify her own seduction towards Yousuf. These women cannot keep away from Yousuf as well..
So.. She called Yousuf in front of them.. Remember these are the same women who spoke 1230 and made allegations strongly against the the wife of Azeez.. Now what happens is they are themselves stunned and started admiring Yousuf in a seducing manner... What happened is they (Wa'qatta'anna) disassociated (usually translated as cut) what was stated before (Aydeehunna).. Normally translated as their hands... but this word Aydeehunna or aydeehum definitly even within Quran means what was before them (what ever they stated before etc).. So.. These ladies forgot what they stated before on the wife of Azeez and they themselves stunned fir the same act..
So.. Wife of Azeez in front of her friends /women justified that she is not wrong and their statement that they spread is wrong..
Quran stops there.. But these women might have given hard time to Yousuf since they were given an accommodation to stay there and they could seduce him at any time.. That was the mighty plan of wife of Azeez..
Note.. In 1232 wife of Azeez openly accepts with her friendly women that she seduced Yousuf.. But her plan is that these women also do the same.. So she is not all alone.. Indeed these women did.. That's why Yousuf in verse 1233 says prison is better than what THEY (WOMEN) invites.. Women did play a part here eversince they were given lodging (Sikan)..Sikan = accommodation /lodging and not knife
Aydeehunna = what was before (stated) and not their hands
Wa'qatta'anna = disassociated / relaxed..
Thank you..

peace all,
After reading jkhan's post (not often I do) I looked into this again and it seems a modified interpretation could be plausible, but it requires further investigation.
e.g.
It may require the tashkeel of "sikkinan" (commonly translated as knife) to be modified here, for it to be translated as "resting couch/place". This would have to be checked with its other usage
https//corpus.quran.com/qurandictionary.jsp?q=skn#(123113)
and in Classical Arabic dictionaries (CAD).And an alternative understanding of "qatta'na aydiyahunna" would have to be sought, that actually has some basis in Quran or CAD, e.g. "cut off their relationship" (perhaps they were married) or other meaning.
https//misconceptions-about-islam.com/misconception.php?id=37The strongest evidence for a re-interpretation that I can see, based on a preliminary check, is it is implied they tried to seduce him from himself, not just the wife of Azeez. See 1251.
So whilst it is possible, requires better research.

Peace centi50,
The question is..... did all the women cut their hands simultaneously. nope and why did all the women have knives in the first place hmm
No, the ladies heard about the encounter between Yusef and his employers wife and was curious as to what provoked such a response by her. So
she invited the ladies over to a gathering and had brother Yusef to present himself and when the ladies saw him they swooned because he was so fine
(even looked better than the Hawk ;D) and replied colloquially that he must be an angel. The translations in question can be explored by using the tri-lateral roots.
God Bless You
