    hello,

in surah an-nisa verse 25, it says “This is for those of you who fear falling into sin” about marrying slaves. does this mean Allah allowed people to marry slaves out of lust? the commentary i’ve seen seems to say that this was revealed to protect men who feared committing adultery, by allowing them to marry slaves easily. i am confused because i thought marriage shouldn’t be done out of lust. verses 24 says “ as long as you seek them with your wealth in a legal marriage, not in fornication”, which seems to be against marrying someone for sexual desires, slave or free woman. can anyone explain this?

      Peace xtalia.
      Welcome.

"Ma malakat aymanukum" can be translated as many ranks of people including all people under responsibility /protection of others. Be it servants, employees, slaves, children,.. depending of the context.
Just how does one translate the verse in our generation knowing that in many societies slavery is abolished?
What is not abolished is ranks and status of people like rich, poor and in between. , leaders.bosses and those under them...etc.i.e those who can afford and those who struggle and just try to manage.
Therefore many in society cannot afford expensive dowry and marriage and remain celibate for a while.

Say one can leave "Ma Malakat Aymanukum in 425 as believing slave women- if you like, or one can translate it as "women of less expantency/poor/...in society or employees or..
So let us leave it as your slavesand translate the few verses below to see if it makes sense

Those among you who cannot afford to marry free( Status /financial/rank...of this world) believing women, may marry believing slave(status.reliance/servant...) women.
God knows best about your belief, and you are equal to one another, as far as belief is concerned.
You shall obtain permission from their guardians before you marry them, and pay them their due dowry equitably.
They( This applies to the believing husband as well) shall maintain moral behavior, by not committing adultery, or having secret lovers. Once they are freed through marriage,
if they commit adultery, their punishment shall be half of that for the free women- i.e treat them even better do not mistreat them .*
Marrying is a better alternative for those unable to wait. Or to be patient is better for you. God is Forgiver, Most Merciful.
      .

God wills to explain things for you, and to guide you through past precedents, and to redeem you. God is Omniscient, Most Wise.

God wishes to redeem you, while those who pursue their lusts wish that you deviate a great deviation.
God wishes to lighten your burden, for the human being is created weak.

GOD s advice is always best for us
Humans,,especially men in all societies can take the higher ground and mistreat others including their wives to play the status/ race. GOD knows we are weak and we can be very arrogant.
      GOD bless you.
      Peace.

If you are as wealthy as to keep women your oaths own,
you are wealthy enough to marry self-protected (chaste) believing women (55).
In that case you are not allowed to marry those whom your oaths own,
your poor will marry them with your permission since you are those women's protectors.

        An Nisa 25
And those among you who cannot easily marry self-protected believing women
may marry "your daughters" (فتياتكم) from among the believing ones whom your oaths own.

The same rule is expressed in an Nisa 24
And the protected women except those whom your oaths own.

          Mohsanaat are chaste women,
and they are lawful to you.

          An Nisa 24
And the chaste women except those whom your oaths own.

          It is clear and cut
both the women who are lawful to you (55)
and the ones your oaths own... are chaste.

          And
the ones your oaths own are not your slaves,
they are your young daughters (فتياتكم).
You will not marry them, but your poor ones will
with the permission of their protectors, بإذن أهلهن
          that is you.

They are the same category of people mentioned in An Nisa 3
... or marry off the ones your oaths own.

Those whom your oaths own are not lawful to you (some of them are
male, and so are you). You will نكح them to other people than yourself.

but in 2433 they are your biological daughters, they are not of the ones who your oaths posses.

Islam gave women rights of protection from previous generations when women had no rights and were subject to mistreatment culturally. With the advent of Islam women were to be respected and not used as men saw fit. So revelations descended to have men accountable for the treatment of all females
regardless of status. With that in mind a chapter was devoted to improve the lives of females.

To your Question in surah an-nisa verse 25, it says “This is for those of you who fear falling into sin” about marrying slaves. does this mean Allah allowed people to marry slaves out of lust?

Yeah we men lust after women. The revelations were two fold!

                1. As you correctly stated "this was revealed to protect men who feared committing adultery,"

                2. what you miss is that we men could no longer "pump and dump" or have sex and leave the women without obligation. So both parties benefited from the relationship spiritually and socially. This by Allah's grace was a great fix for men's behavior and female's empowerment.

                God bless you

                peace
