Interpreting Surah Al-Waqiah – Literal or Metaphorical?
-
Salam Everyone,
I was having a chat with a worker in my building who takes care of small tasks and assists residents with their daily needs. He is someone I often talk to, and during one of our conversations, he mentioned Surah Al-Waqiah (Chapter 56 of the Quran). He told me that he hopes to be among the "foremost" (sabiqoon) mentioned in this chapter. He explained that in this life, he does not have the luxuries that wealthy people enjoy—like servants, a comfortable lifestyle, companionship, and fine drinks—but he believes that in the hereafter, all of these things will be given to him as described in the surah.
This got me thinking about how the chapter describes paradise and hell. The imagery in this surah is very vivid, painting a picture of paradise where people sit on high couches, served by young boys carrying drinks that do not cause intoxication or regret. It also describes pure companions (hoor) and an overall sense of comfort, abundance, and ease. On the other hand, the surah presents a stark contrast with the punishment of those who reject the truth, showing them eating from the tree of zaqqum, which burns their insides, drinking boiling water, and suffering under scorching heat.
So my questions
• Do you these descriptions literally, meaning that paradise will have actual servants, drinks, and rewards as described?
• Or are these descriptions metaphorical, representing something beyond our understanding, such as spiritual fulfillment, peace, and contentment?
• Could these verses be addressing human desires for comfort and happiness, especially for those who do not have them in this life, like my friend who sees paradise as the ultimate justice for his struggles?
In view of an analogy, should these verses be interpreted as referring to life on earth rather than the hereafter? Some interpretations suggest that these descriptions reflect a system of justice and reward in the worldly sense rather than a physical paradise and hell. If taken metaphorically, could this mean that "paradise" refers to a just system where people live in harmony with divine principles, and "hell" represents the suffering caused by rejecting these principles?
The Quran itself states that some verses are clear and others are allegorical (mutashabihat). Would you consider the descriptions in Surah Al-Waqiah as literal or metaphorical?
Looking forward to your thoughts.

Hi;
1- The Quran says that all verses are clear and explicit. However, it also states that some verses have secondary and tertiary meanings as well as their clear meanings. That is, first we will believe in what is clearly stated, and then we will ponder the representational meanings of the same verse, if any
https//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=9612773.msg445412#msg445412
2- Descriptions of Paradise and Hell are also literal, real narrations. However, these narrations present a small part of the whole, that is, examples. A certain section of the trillions of blessings in Paradise is presented. Indeed, the expression "in it is for them whatever their selves desire and delights the eyes" shows that the counterparts of all beauties in the world also exist in the hereafter. This includes all beauties from reading books to playing chess. And again, there are also secondary or tertiary meanings represented by the same verses. For example, the expression "prepare war horses to terrify the enemy" represents both literal war horses, and figuratively tanks, planes, nuclear weapons, war drones, and robots. For instance, the rivers of Paradise represent both literal rivers and, figuratively, lakes, oceans, and many other blessings, as I explained in my writing here

Thank you Emre for your response and explanations.
To All
When I read these verses at face value, I tend to imagine that the Quran is addressing those deprived of such luxuries in this world, offering them assurance that they will have what they lacked in the Hereafter. Alternatively, it could also be speaking to those who already have these comforts, reassuring them that they will continue if they live righteously. But here is where my question deepens Is not human intellect beyond just having people serve them, drinking wine, and having companions?
If I misunderstand these verses, they might seem to present a God who is proving the worth of the same luxury benefits that privileged people enjoy in this world. Yet, isn’t the real message of the Quran about something far greater than material rewards? Many people.. especially those who already have access to such comforts may not even see these as the ultimate goal of life, let alone the afterlife.
So, is the main appeal of the Hereafter being framed as luxury—fine clothing, drinks, companionship? Is this what we should strive for?
However what ever it may, that we admit it or not, these are things humans deeply desire, and the Quran speaks to that inner reality. But is that really the core motivation for doing good in this world? Would appreciate different perspectives on this.

The hereafter is another "world/dimension/realm/...
We are humans in this world , we live and see our reality/reality of this physical world.
In the hereafter we are told we will be resurrected, do we remain humans?Definitely not, it will be. another life ,another form and another realm/experience. For example if all humans are resurrected at once , reproduction is not necessary. The soul takes on another form/coupling/body.
Therefore we cannot imagine "heaven" or "hell" or its contents, nor what form we will take .
Qoran gives descriptions which are allegorical. Examples are given to us through things we are familiar with and we cannot assume that we need the same things that we need or have as humans.
For example ,what is the way of life of Angels? They do not have the same life as us nor the same form/body.
All we can say is that there will be those who will be "happy" with their next experience and many that will not.
My take is this
I take "heaven" as being in GOD kingdom , chosen by us through our freedom of choice here ,in agreement that it is the best new experience with everyone there about this new life with GOD and satisfied with it.
And I take" hell " as being away from GOD s kingdom, through our own choice and decision here, in a worst experience and world than this life here of our trial. So we will have to wait and see what these two different experiences will entail when we come to our new life next.
GOD bless you.

Wishing all of you a blessed Ramadan and may this month of fasting bring peace and guidance to all of us.
Salam GL,
I see what you are saying but I have a question. How do we know for certain that we will not remain human in the hereafter? From what I understand, humans were originally created in paradise before being sent to earth
"We said, 'Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.'" (Quran 23
If that is the case, why assume that resurrection will mean becoming something entirely different? The Quran describes people in paradise eating, drinking, sitting on couches, having companionship, and experiencing joy or suffering. If these are just allegories, what exactly is the Quran telling us about the afterlife?
You mentioned that resurrection will happen all at once, unlike how we are born into this world. But wasn’t the first human, Adam, also created as a human without going through birth? If Adam was created in full form and sent to earth, why should we assume that resurrection would make us something other than human?
Not saying I have the answer, just thinking out loud. Curious to hear your thoughts.

The hereafter is another "world/dimension/realm/...
Dear Good Logic, you have presented the lies of spiritualist pagans here as they are. And you've also said that you deny the verses (saying they are representative is in reality a masked denial). However, I think Fusion asked the question here from an Islamic/Quran belief perspective. So, it has been a wrong answer in the wrong place.

Peace Emre.
I do not understand what you are saying to me? Please explain what lie did I present ?
Peace Fusion.
Human means we die, the body will perish, the real person -soul- will not-.
The hereafter means another form , we do not die after the resurrection--La Yadukuna fiha Al Mawt-As for, quote
""We said, 'Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.'" (Quran 23"Adam ,s soul was in paradise ,not his body. When we die , GOD takes our soul not the body.
The souls all descend here on earth and become the humans through reproduction on earth through the generations until GOD ends the time predetermined for the humans to live here to undergo the trial. At the resurrection the souls will take on the coupling and form GOD assigns to them. We do not stay humans since there there will be no death.
That is how I understand what Qoran is saying about the hereafter.
GOD bless you .

Peace, GL.
I appreciate your response and your interpretation of these concepts. However, since you are making specific claims about Adam’s soul being in Paradise, the distinction between the soul and body, and how we will exist in the Hereafter, I would like to ask for clear Quranic verses that directly support these statements.
For example
Can you provide a Quranic verse that explicitly states that Adam’s soul, not his body, was in Paradise?
Where does the Quran clearly distinguish between the body and the soul in a way that supports your explanation of resurrection?
Which verse states that we will not remain human in the Hereafter but take on another form?
If the Quran does not directly state these things, then wouldn't that mean these are interpretations rather than explicit Quranic teachings?Looking forward to your thoughts.
Peace.

I am going to quote a view I agree with and see what you make of it, quote
There is a specific set up that was designed by God to represent or symbolize for us all that and to initiate the process of our departure from Where we existed before this life to Earth.
God has chosen Adam, his wife, and Satan to be the key players in that set up to represent the mistake of being impressed by Satan, and being egoistically hesitant or indecisive about God's absolute authority.
Eating from the tree and obeying Satan represents that. God, graciously, forgave us that mistake, and granted us a final chance on earth. Both Adam and his wife initiated the human race on earth for this final chance.
Satan was sent down along with Adam and his wife, and he was to initiate the jinn race on earth for the same final chance that was given to humans. With the birth of a new baby on earth, a soul is given a final chance to choose between God and Satan one more time.
A jinn companion is assigned for that soul all the time to represent Satan's points of view. This act is perfectly described in different sets of verses in the Quran
O children of Adam, do not let the devil dupe you as he did when he caused the eviction of your parents from Paradise , and the removal of their garments to expose their bodies. He and his tribe see you, while you do not see them. We appoint the devils as companions of those who do not believe.
We said to the angels, "Fall prostrate before Adam." They fell prostrate, except Satan. He became a jinn, for he disobeyed the order of His Lord.* Will you choose him and his descendants as lords instead of Me, even though they are your enemies? What a miserable substitute!
Your Lord said to the angels, "I am creating a human being from aged mud, like the potter's clay.
"Once I perfect him, and blow into him from My spirit, you shall fall prostrate before him."
The angels fell prostrate; all of them,
except Iblis (Satan). He refused to be with the prostrators.
He said, "O Iblis (Satan), why are you not with the prostrators?"
He said, "I am not to prostrate before a human being, whom You created from aged mud, like the potter's clay."
He said, "Therefore, you must get out; you are banished.
"You have incurred My condemnation until the Day of Judgment."
He said, "My Lord, respite me until the day they are resurrected."
He said, "You are respited.
"Until the specified day and time."
He said, "My Lord, since You have willed that I go astray, I will surely entice them on earth; I will send them all astray.
"Except those among Your Ibad who are devoted absolutely to You alone."
He said, "This is a law that is inviolable.
"You have no power over My servants. You only have power over the strayers who follow you.
"And Hell awaits them all. When we said to the angels, "Fall prostrate before Adam," they fell prostrate, except Satan; he refused, was too arrogant, and a disbeliever.
We said, "O Adam, live with your wife in Paradise , and eat therefrom generously, as you please, but do not approach this tree, lest you sin."
But the devil duped them, and caused their eviction therefrom. We said, "Go down as enemies of one another. On Earth shall be your habitation and provision for awhile."Then, Adam received from his Lord words, whereby He redeemed him. He is the Redeemer, Most Merciful.
We said, "Go down therefrom, all of you. When guidance comes to you from Me, those who follow My guidance will have no fear, nor will they grieve. They ate from it, whereupon their bodies became visible to them, and they tried to cover themselves with the leaves of Paradise . Adam thus disobeyed his Lord, and fell.
Subsequently, his Lord chose him, redeemed him, and guided him.
He said, "Go down therefrom, all of you. You are enemies of one another. When guidance comes to you from Me, anyone who follows My guidance will not go astray, nor suffer any misery. He thus duped them with lies. As soon as they tasted the tree, their bodies became visible to them, and they tried to cover themselves with the leaves of Paradise . Their Lord called upon them "Did I not enjoin you from that tree, and warn you that the devil is your most ardent enemy?"
They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged our souls, and unless You forgive us and have mercy on us, we will be losers."
He said, "Go down as enemies of one another. On earth shall be your habitation and provision for awhile."
He said, "On it you will live, on it you will die, and from it you will be broughtIt seems that the Angels were not aware of our mistake and the divine plan God designed for us to be debased on earth along with the jinns. All what they knew was that Satan is wicked, and disobedient. They couldn't figure out why he is going to be placed on earth. They wondered about that and God told them "I know what you do not know. "
Recall that your Lord said to the angels, "I am placing a representative on Earth." They said, "Will You place therein one who will spread evil therein and shed blood, while we sing Your praises, glorify You, and uphold Your absolute authority?" He said, "I know what you do not know."
And many more verses that indicate we became humans who will undergo the trial on earth.
Another example I can give you is when when the prophet was summoned to the high heaven to receive Qoran , do you think he travelled there as a human -body- included?
GOD controls our soul he takes those that have got to the end of their predetermined time of death and the body is left here to undergo the funeral.
When the prophet was asleep his soul- the real person= was summoned and when the task was finished the soul was returned to the body. -
I see your point GL, and it is an interesting way to look at things. Some of these topics are not fully detailed in the Quran, which is why people understand them in different ways. There is always room for reflection. Appreciate the discussion and your insights.

I agree. Well said dear.
I have segmented Sura in paragraphs/Frames. First frame Ayah 1 to 9.
The overall rhetorical and communicative impact of First Paragraph of Surah Al-Waqi’ah (561-9) is profound, employing a combination of apocalyptic imagery, suspense, contrast, and interrogative emphasis to achieve several communicative objectives.
This passage is not merely informational; it is transformational. It forces the listener to confront reality—there is no escape, only a choice Do you want to be of the Right or the Left?
My attempted translation taking care of rhetorical value indicated by elisions and by reference to discussion on this subject else where (تدبر and تصریف)۔
