Understanding the Role of Personal Effort in Divine Guidance

As I continue exploring the Quranic message, one question keeps coming to mind To what extent is divine guidance dependent on God's will, and to what extent does it rely on our own efforts and sincerity?
Several verses mention that “God guides whom He wills” (e.g., 2272, 2856), while others emphasize that those who strive in His cause are guided (2969). How can we reconcile these two perspectives?
Is guidance a passive gift, or the result of active inner commitment?
How can we distinguish between a test and true misguidance caused by our shortcomings?
Does the Quran offer concrete steps to remain open to true guidance?

Guidance is not a passive gift nor something you earn but rather it is a response.
The message is one while the light is constant so what changes is not the source but the eyes.
You turn to it it meets you. You turn away it leaves you.Assigned Exception
Some individuals are pre-ordained for guidance not as reward but as assignment.
Their role is chosen not claimed. Their guidance is ensured not earned."And We gave him judgment while still a child." (1912)
"He said, I am indeed a servant of God. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet..." (1930)Even Prophet Mohammad was not given power to guide.
He was told deliver the message. You cannot guide whom you love.
"You do not guide whom you love but God guides whom He wills." (2856)
And if Mohammad had spoken on God's behalf without revelation the consequence was declared without compromise.
"If he had fabricated any sayings about Us We would have seized him by the right hand then cut from him the aorta." (6944–46)That is the reality of divine guidance. It begins with God. It reaches only those who face it with open eyes. And even those sent with it carry its weight not its control.

I really appreciate this conversation, it’s so deeply insightful. The idea that guidance isn’t just a gift or something we earn but a two way response, really resonates with me. As Fusion put it so beautifully the light is constant and it's up to us whether we look toward it or not.
To me this aligns perfectly with the verse, Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves. It highlights personal effort and spiritual openness as key. The Quran guides but our hearts have to be ready to receive that guidance. -
2856 has the answer
You surely cannot guide whoever you like ˹O Prophet˺, but it is Allah Who guides whoever He wills, and He knows best who are ˹fit to be˺ guided.A lot changes when we change mentally just how it is instructed in the Book. So yes, it is an active inner commitment.
If there is a test you end it by working on a solution. Lets just say it is linked to expansion of the consciousness that constantly works like a radar and wants to be useful as well as nurtured.Misguidance is the result of rejecting inner voice.
I would call concrete steps for true guidance to be rather subjective but yes, mind change is a must.You will always know whether a person is truly following the Book.There are people who call themselves Quran alone but find it too offensive to live it because they are so perfect in their own eyes.
