The Luni-Solar Calendar: From Antiquity to the Quran
Introduction
Calendars were essential instruments for ancient societies, not only for measuring time but for structuring religious obligations, agricultural cycles, and social order. Among these systems, the luni-solar calendar—which harmonized the lunar month with the solar year—was one of the most widespread. While Mesopotamia, the Levant, and Greece refined methods of intercalation to align lunar months with seasonal cycles, Arabia before Islam also relied on this system to synchronize pilgrimage and trade. The Qur’an later acknowledged the cosmic order of sun and moon in timekeeping, while decisively reforming Arabian practice into a strictly lunar framework.
Luni-Solar Calendars in Antiquity
- Mesopotamia: The Babylonians organized their calendar around 12 lunar months of ≈29.5 days each, with the shortfall against the solar year corrected by intercalary months. This ensured that agricultural and ritual festivals remained seasonally aligned.
- Hebrews: During the Babylonian Exile, Jewish communities absorbed this system. Their calendar inserted seven additional months over 19 years (the Metonic cycle) to keep Passover in spring, reflecting both agricultural and theological concerns.
- Greeks and Romans: City-states like Athens adopted luni-solar calendars, while Rome’s early lunar system descended into disarray due to political manipulation of intercalation. Julius Caesar’s reform in 46 BCE established the Julian solar calendar, severing ties with lunar reckoning.
Arabia Before Islam
Pre-Islamic Arabs also operated a luni-solar calendar with twelve lunar months, but they used nasīʾ (intercalation) to maintain alignment with the solar year. This was known as the “Sabaen Calendar” and has been found recorded in inscriptions (primarily in Southern Arabia). The Arab names for the months that have been passed down also indicate a seasonal alignment to the names (rabai = spring) possibly denoting that these were fixed to the seasons at some point.
We also know that the tribe of Quraish would travel every summer and winter (Quran 106:2), which would have been impossible if they were following a lunar calendar.
According to the narrations, it was Umar in 638 A.D. (6 years after the passing of Mohammed) who canonized the lunar calendar, establishing the Hijra as year-1. This system cut all ties with the old methods of timekeeping and created a world in which the restricted months and the pilgrimage as well as Ramadhan all began shifting by 11 days each year to come in all seasons and times.
Qur’anic Perspective on Timekeeping
The Qur’an affirms that both the sun and the moon are celestial signs given for measuring time and for calculating the number of years:
Surah Yūnus (10:5):
ُهُوَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ ٱلشَّمْسَ ضِيَآءًۭ وَٱلْقَمَرَ نُورًۭا وَقَدَّرَهُۥ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعْلَمُوا۟ عَدَدَ ٱلسِّنِينَ وَٱلْحِسَابَ ۚ مَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ذَٰلِكَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ يُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لِقَوْمٍۢ يَعْلَمُونَ ٥
”He is the One who has made the sun a radiance, and the moon a light, and He has measured its phases; that you may know the number of the years and the count. God has not created this except with the truth. He clarifies the revelations for a people who know.”
Surah Al-Isrāʾ (17:12):
وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ ءَايَتَيْنِ ۖ فَمَحَوْنَآ ءَايَةَ ٱلَّيْلِ وَجَعَلْنَآ ءَايَةَ ٱلنَّهَارِ مُبْصِرَةًۭ لِّتَبْتَغُوا۟ فَضْلًۭا مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَلِتَعْلَمُوا۟ عَدَدَ ٱلسِّنِينَ وَٱلْحِسَابَ ۚ وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍۢ فَصَّلْنَـٰهُ تَفْصِيلًۭا ١٢
”And We made the night and the day as two signs, so We erased the sign of night and We made the sign of day to see in, that you may seek bounty from your Lord, and that you may know the number of the years and the count. And everything We have detailed completely.”
Surah Al-Rahman (55:5):
ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍۢ ٥
”The sun and the moon are perfectly calculated.”
If we simply remained with the above 2-3 verses, then this is a closed case where God’s system has designed a “luni-solar” system for humankind to know the years and keep the count.
However, before moving on to the “elephant in the room” which are verses 9:36-37, we need to explore one more point, which is the “restricted months” that are mentioned throughout the Quran.
Restricted Months and Hunting Prohibitions
The Qur’an emphasizes the sanctity of the four restricted months (al-ashhur al-ḥurum), during which both warfare and hunting were forbidden. These months not only safeguarded pilgrimage and ensured peaceful travel and trade, but they also preserved the wildlife, ensuring that no hunting would take place during this period, and that anyone found guilty of breaking this sacred rule would pay a heavy fine:
Surah Al-Māʾidah (5:95-96):
٩٤ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَقْتُلُوا۟ ٱلصَّيْدَ وَأَنتُمْ حُرُمٌۭ ۚ وَمَن قَتَلَهُۥ مِنكُم مُّتَعَمِّدًۭا فَجَزَآءٌۭ مِّثْلُ مَا قَتَلَ مِنَ ٱلنَّعَمِ يَحْكُمُ بِهِۦ ذَوَا عَدْلٍۢ مِّنكُمْ هَدْيًۢا بَـٰلِغَ ٱلْكَعْبَةِ أَوْ كَفَّـٰرَةٌۭ طَعَامُ مَسَـٰكِينَ أَوْ عَدْلُ ذَٰلِكَ صِيَامًۭا لِّيَذُوقَ وَبَالَ أَمْرِهِۦ ۗ عَفَا ٱللَّهُ عَمَّا سَلَفَ ۚ وَمَنْ عَادَ فَيَنتَقِمُ ٱللَّهُ مِنْهُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌۭ ذُو ٱنتِقَامٍ ٩٥
أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ صَيْدُ ٱلْبَحْرِ وَطَعَامُهُۥ مَتَـٰعًۭا لَّكُمْ وَلِلسَّيَّارَةِ ۖ وَحُرِّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ صَيْدُ ٱلْبَرِّ مَا دُمْتُمْ حُرُمًۭا ۗ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِىٓ إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ ٩٦
5:95 O you who believe, do not kill any game while you are under restriction; and whoever of you kills it deliberately, then the recompense is to value what was killed against that from the livestock, which shall be judged by two equitable persons from you, and to make it as a donation to reach the Ka’bah. Or, its expiation shall be in using it to feed the needy ones, while he abstains from it; that is to suffer the results of his deed; God forgives what has passed. And whoever returns, then God will seek vengeance on him. God is Noble, capable of vengeance.
5:96 Permitted for you is the catch of the sea, to eat it as enjoyment for you and for those who travel; and forbidden for you is the catch of the land as long as you are under restriction; and be aware of God to whom you will be gathered.
What is very clear from the above verses is that the 4-months are not simply the months of pilgrimage, but they also involve a serious and severe “hunting ban” which makes perfect sense when we realize that every civilized nation has figured out that hunting of wild animals must be restricted at certain times (especially the birth season), otherwise there is a serious chance that the ecological balance is disrupted and that the wildlife would go extinct from over-hunting.
This hunting restriction seems to pre-date the Quran as the 4-months likely stemmed from the Abrahamic teachings which were given to his sons and became prevalent in the region.
Surah At-Tawbah (9:36–37):
إِنَّ عِدَّةَ ٱلشُّهُورِ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًۭا فِى كِتَـٰبِ ٱللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ مِنْهَآ أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌۭ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ ۚ فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا۟ فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ وَقَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ كَآفَّةًۭ كَمَا يُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمْ كَآفَّةًۭ ۚ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ ٣٦
إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّسِىٓءُ زِيَادَةٌۭ فِى ٱلْكُفْرِ ۖ يُضَلُّ بِهِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُحِلُّونَهُۥ عَامًۭا وَيُحَرِّمُونَهُۥ عَامًۭا لِّيُوَاطِـُٔوا۟ عِدَّةَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ فَيُحِلُّوا۟ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ زُيِّنَ لَهُمْ سُوٓءُ أَعْمَـٰلِهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ٣٧
9:36 The count of the months with God is twelve months in the book of God the day He created the heavens and the earth; four of them are restricted. This is the correct system; so do not wrong yourselves in them; and fight the polytheists collectively as they fight you collectively. And know that God is with the righteous.”
9:37 In the use of the intercalary exists an increase in rejection; that those who have rejected may misguide with it. They make it permissible one calendar year, and forbid it one calendar year, so as to circumvent the count of what God has made forbidden; thus they make permissible what God has made forbidden. Their evil works have been adorned for them, and God does not guide the rejecting people.”
This is really the crust of the entire lunar vs luni-solar debate, where most scholars read.
God is saying there are only 12 months in a year
God is saying the “intercalary” is a bad thingAs a result, it seems Umar switched to a pure lunar calendar, thinking this is what God was telling them to do (because if we use an intercalary, we are using 13 months and violating God’s assertion).
How Many Months in 1-year?
The question may sound silly, but the answer actually is “it depends!” You see, there is nothing to stop people from having a 10-day month or a 20-day or a 30-day or even more or less because the word “month” is not always associated with the lunar cycle (e.g. the current Gregorian calendar decided its “months” were between 29-31 days, while the Bahai sect decided to have 19 day months).
So, what we learn from God is that our count of the months should fit 12 of those in 1 year – meaning our months are roughly “30-days each”. Now, it happens that this number also correlates to the moon cycle of which there are also 12 full cycles in every year (never more, never less) – so the link was made between the “month” and the “moon”.
What about the “Intercalary”?
9:37 In the use of the intercalary exists an increase in rejection; that those who have rejected may misguide with it. They make it permissible one calendar year, and forbid it one calendar year, so as to circumvent the count of what God has made forbidden; thus they make permissible what God has made forbidden. Their evil works have been adorned for them, and God does not guide the rejecting people.”
Again, due to a misreading of the verse, the people have outlawed the intercalary thinking God is telling them that it was a “bad deed”—but closer inspection of the verse tells us that it was not the intercalary that God was admonishing, but the sneaky behaviour of the people to insert it “every other year” which was a diabolical act to try and circumvent the hunting restriction! The correct intercalary is inserted every 3rd year (not every 2nd year), so in reality the manipulation was causing a gap of nearly 3-weeks inside the hunting season, and that manipulation would only get worse over time resulting in easy game to hunt as the animals are at their most vulnerable.
However, this later generation of Muslims completely misread the instructions, causing an ecological disaster as the lunar calendar completely exposed all animal life to hunting in the wrong seasons! As a result, the lion and zebra spoken of in the Quran are now ancient history as the Arabian Peninsula where this distorted version of Islam is practiced has become barren and dead through overhunting of the wild game.
Conclusion
The luni-solar calendar dominated much of the ancient world, balancing lunar ritual cycles with solar agricultural needs through intercalation. Pre-Islamic Arabia shared this practice, but some confusion over the divine script caused a serious shift where the intercalation was abolished and a purely lunar system was adopted. Qur’anic verses affirm the cosmic roles of sun and moon, which in-turn lends support to natures balance and harmony.
Only by returning to the system of the restricted months and balance of nature can we hope to reap the benefits of God’s divine design of our world and maximize the benefits, not just for man, but for beasts and ecology alike.
