Breakthrough (maybe) ?

It is definatley interesting, however I see it as being very far from a breakthrough, because of the organization that this woman Ms. Amina Waddud represents. She represents a growing movement amongst the North American Muslim community at muslimwakeup.com, a movement calling itself a "progressive Muslim" movement... I have no problems with a Muslim woman leading prayers as I see nothing in the Quran against that, this is not the issue.
The issue is how influential this dangerous so called progressive organization is turning out to be. These progressives from what I have seen and read from both sides are nothing more than an extention of Western secular society, and the goal of their movement seems to be to simply conform to Western Standards as opposed to genuinely living by the tenets of true Islam. Thus their idol is Western culture and the goal is not to sincerely live by God's truth. Thus you see many supporting Bush's warmongering in the middle east, apologetics in support of Gay Marriage etc....all under the banner of a liberated "Islam". They are NOT Muslim and are simply trying to remove the shackles of traditional Islam, open the gates to interpret the Quran as they please so that they can better fit in with Western society.
For example, Ms. Amina Wadud says flatly she rejects cutting the hand of hte thief in the Quran and that it is the Quran which gives her the tools to reject the Quran!! Instead of patience and humility and coming from an approach that God's religion is the most logical, she openly declares to reject certain "troublesome" Quranic verses. Sure, I reject that understanding of hand cutting too, but unlike her, I reject it because it is the wrong interpretation of the verse (which asks us to cut off resources and wealth), NOT because I knwo better than God!!!
This is where the danger is. Many of these progressives, come from the understanding that the Quran is flawed, that it is open to interpretation and that they know better...there is therefore no sincerity and patience in their approach, and they are simply opening the flood gates to a disaster, instead of building a truly new and liberated Islamic identity. The goal is nothing short of conforming to western society and its false ideologies at any means possible under the guise of "a progressive Islamic identity". Peace,

I equate "Doctor" Amina Wadud's antics with the Catholics abandoning the Latin mass. It is a mismash and re-working of the same rituals and of no, I mean NO, NADA, NEYT, NON, NEIN, NAO consequence. Their entire "religion" bears no semblance to DEEN AL ISLAM detailed in the reading, God's Book of guidance for mankind (AL-QUR'AAN).

I think it's true that many people here would have no problem with the female lead of certain matters including the one in question if the female is best qualified or motivated. That's not the issue.
The question is sincerity and while I don't pretend to know in absolute terms what the muslimwakeup styled progressives possess; I can report that their forum has deleted/censored posts by Edip Yuksel that were in relation to a competition to draw an image of Muhammad.
