while reading someones post they brought this ayat to show a phyaical sjd - well here it goes.Page 1596 ? lanes.
Shamasa = enmity/Niggardly/tenacious/avaricious/sun/sunshine.

http//www.free-minds.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=41797#41797This is like a lot of other words with meaning according to the context ? like Naar can mean war and fire ? so some of us literally start to think the Jinns were made of fire instead of a people of a confused state due to war-mongerring.
Wajadtuha waqawmaha yasjudoonalilshshamsi min dooni Allahi wazayyana lahumu alshshaytanuaAAmalahum fasaddahum AAani alssabeeli fahumla yahtadoona
"I found her and her people worshipping the sun besides Allah Satan has made their deeds seem pleasing in their eyes, and has kept them away from the Path,- so they receive no guidance,-
So if we take the SJD = the act of accepting .
Then to accept the evil habits (enmity/Niggardly/tenacious/avaricious) is opposite to accepting Allah (Kindnesses/forgivenesses e.t.c)
So the soldier (hoopoo ? a man) can tell the difference from the goings on I think.
So now it all depends how much cradibility we give The Lanes Manual.

To understand any verse of the Quran it is necessary to go into details of every word of the verse, other wise the results would be misleading.
Whether in this verse the SUJUD is physical or metaphorical can be understood by the word "WAJADTU" (I FOUND)
Had the SUJUD been physical then the bird would have said "I SAW"
("Found out") is always after investigation and to know whether the sujud is physical or not there is no need of investigation.
Moreover the Queen and his people were prostrating to the Sun besides Allah, means they were prostrating to Allah as well as the Sun. Now this makes no sense because those who prostrate to Allah do not prostrate to the Sun and those who prostrate to the Sun do not prostrate to Allah.
The Hindus submit to different gods for different things as and when they need or require but they do not prostrate every time, but they do prostrate physically in the temples in front of all their gods. For example when the disbelievers need money they submit to goddess Laxmi and pray to her for money. We Muslims ask Allah for everything while they ask to their respective gods according to the power of their gods. For rain they submit to god Indira.

Do they not consider the Qur'an (with care)? Had it been from other than Allah they would surely have FOUND therein much discrepancy. 482
To FIND OUT (WAJAD) the discrepancies / contradictions in the Quran one must read it fully and research. The discrepancies / contradictions are not there on the face of the Quran which can be seen.
(THERE ARE NO SUCH DISCREPANCIES OR CONTRADICTIONS IN THE QURAN)Therefore in my understanding the Sujud is metaphorical.

The sun has always stood as a symbol of the Divine nature, yet it is only a SYMBOL, which points to something greater.
People always reach higher understandings (Abraham started with stars, then moon, then sun) but stop reaching further. The Sun is one of the highest SIGNS, yet it is still FAR BELOW the One God.
The Queen of Sheba was arrogant in knowledge because they had VERY HIGH knowledge, but there was still higher understanding.
In Ancient philosophy of Kemet(egypt), HERU (from where we get Hero) was represented by the SUN. The Christians gave the same story and called HERU "Jesus" (the SON).
The SUN is what keeps the Universe going, but it is the God who keeps the SUN going.
The SUN is what gives us the Divine Energy (Ra/Chi/Kundalini, etc)
We eat food in order to get at the captured SUNLIGHT, which keeps us alive. We BREATHE for the same purpose.
In conclusion, the higher our understanding develops we learn the importance of the SUN, but we must always keep in mind that the God is above ALL creation. We prostrate(hear and obey) the God Alone.

I think mz357's addressing of this word in Lanes may have lead to a better understanding if we accept 'shams' in this verse as relating to avarice.

Yes, the moon is a reflector of the suns light, 1/7th of the sun's light.
We do not prostrate to these magnificent structures nor ANY structure, but to the UNPERCIEVEABLE reality that created them.
This is a spiritual process, not one that involves bowing in front of the sun and moon.
To tie this in with my earlier post, while the sun represented HERU (the will), the moon represents the PERSON, which is the reflection of all of a persons conditionings, but not the true SELF. The term individual describes these two natures , the SELF(1) and the PERSON(9), our goal is to raise our conciosuness out of the egotistical PERSON and into the SELF.

The general rules of the arabic language are that the words often have concrete and abstract meanings. The abstract meanings are derived from the concrete meaning rather than the other way around.
So, if the Qur'an mentions the word SHAMS, you first look and see if the concrete meaning fits, if it fits then it is correct. If the concrete meaning does not fit then you look for some abstract meanings that can fit in the sentence.
Having an abstract meaning for a word that seems logical and goes well with the rest of the Qur'an as well as the rest of the sentence could be acceptable. However, this does not negate the sound interpretation that is derived from the concrete meaning of the word.
The concrete meaning for Shams is Sun. Sun fits very well in this AYAH and with the history of many people that worshipped it.
