marrying an adulteress / adulter
-
Salaam
The thing is how can somebody verify if their groom / bride is a virgin or not before marriage? Especially women? I don't think any adulter / fornicator will be honest when asked.
Peace...
Khi- GOD judges by intentions. If u do it unknowingly then logically u wont be punished. But id say one shld try ur best 2 get 2 know his/her partner's character be4 marrying. GOD Bless!

Peace,
The answer has been touched on already.
The present state of the person is what counts not what was before. Like someone indicated a divorced woman is allowed to be married so it has nothing to do with virginity.
It's about what a person is NOW and believes NOW; not what they did previously.
Regards.

Salaam All,
In the Ayah 243, there is no 'Lann' meaning shall not.
There is 'Laa'. It can be used as 'Don't'. But that meaning does not fit with the other words becaue the Ayah is not an order. It is stating a fact that the adulterer as well as the idolator should expect that his/her mate to be of the same bahavior, whether he or she knew about it or not. If it didn't happen in the past then it will happen in the future. So people should realize that fact very well and not go to such a path because it will come back to them one way or another. -
Salam All!
I share Taj's view on this question. I think the God just told us what will happen - because He will lead us this way. If we are sincere believers, He will bless us with a good rewarding relation. If we are not, we shall get no better that what we deserve...
I also wonder about the exact signification of "zina" Is it adultery only or adultery and/or fornication ? This is a very difficult question, because we should have to figure out what marriage is, before understanding what adultery is. Fornication, to my understanding, is not all sex outside "marriage" understood as the state of being married in the eyes of the world that surrounds us. The most important is to be "married" in the eyes of God...

Salaam Elke,
Thanks for sharing with me my view, also allow me to add this bit
The community may not even find out (most probably will never!) about the adultery of a person but that very person ( the adulterer) will eventually know the adultery of his/her mate. So the Ayah is basically a reminder to that person that what you do in hiding will be done unto you!For the second part of your post
I understand adultery= zina as having more than one mate at a time. Because marriage to me is committing to one mate, whether that marriage is recognized to the public or not. And that is why adultery is brought together with idolatry= shirk in one "breath"! Idolatry (spiritual) is having more than one god and adultery (social) is having more than one mate. -

This is prohibited for the believers.'
The adulterer will end up marrying an adulteress or an idol worshiper, and the adulteress will end up marrying an adulterer or an idol worshiper. This is prohibited for the believers.
Therefore i believe it is a command from GOD 4 any believer NOT 2 marry an idolator or adulterer knowingly. GOD Bless! -

Tht is not possble since in the traditional understanding n even according 2 RK the Quran allows 4 upto 4 wives. 'zina' has always meant 2 be illicit sexual reltionships whether one is married or not. GOD Bless!

Salaam Khi,
There is no polygamy in the Quran. The only person who was allowed and mentioned to be having several wives is Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
And the translation that you posted
This is prohibited for the believersYour translation is not accurate.
In the Quran it is written in the past tense.
And my understanding of it is as follows " And that would never happen to the Believers". -
Maybe its saying that the two people involved in cheating on their respective spouses are meant to get married? So maybe the correct translation is not 'an adultress', but 'the adultress'? Or something?
Thats the only thing I can think of that makes sense, seeing as they've cheated, and are attracted to each other, then they should only marry each other, not anyone else, and begin again with remorse. This clears up the first post of this thread's question of how do you tell who is an adulterer.
But this is only if the current translations are incorrect, otherwise I'm still stumped.

Salaam Khi,

Khi- So, then according 2 ur definition of 'zina' he wld come under tht category too then. 'Zina' means any illicit sexual relation.

In the Quran it is written in the past tense.
And my understanding of it is as follows " And that would never happen to the Believers".Khi- The word is 'Hurima' comes from the root 'HRM' which means 2 forbid just as in
He only prohibits(harama) for you the eating of animals that die of themselves (without human interference), blood, the meat of pigs, and animals dedicated to other than GOD. If one is forced (to eat these), without being malicious or deliberate, he incurs no sin. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.
Infact this is the verse where the past tense is used but tht doesnt mean tht this law doesnt apply any more. 243 mentions 'hurima' n is the continuous tense. Ur translation is very far reaching if not impossible. GOD Bless! -

"Hurrima" can also have more than one implication. What I understand from it in the Ayah 243, is a reassurance that Allah would protect the Believers from falling victim to such situations. If one is pure, then one should fully trust that Allah would grant him/her a pure mate and that there should be no doubt in the heart of the Believer because that thing was long settled by Allah.

Khi- I know Muhammad had special permission 2 marry more wives but r u implying tht Muhammad had special permission 2 do ZINA???! Think abt tht.

Khi- 'Hurrima' is not the continuous tense? Look how Yusuf Ali translated it
'...to the believers such a marriage IS FORBIDDEN'. Correct me if im wrong but the past tense wld be 'harama'. Anyways tell me something. According 2 u is it alright if a believer marries an adulterer if he is still into the act n u know it? I already told u tht if u dont know thts a different case. GOD judges by our intentions. Thus is u know tht person is into adultery u cant marry him. GOD Bless! -

OK, from what I understand from the Ayah 243
-If you have kept yourself pure for the sake of God and you have left it to God to send you the right person then be sure that that person is as pure as yourself.
-If you have kept yourself pure for the sake of God and you decided at one point that you want to marry someone who did something wrong in the past (under certain circumstances) but honestly repented and you were willing to accept that person to be your wife, I believe that Allah, according to the Ayah, would not disappoint you.I don't see, from my understanding of the Ayah 243 that a pure person will marry someone who, unknowingly to the pure, is not.

now we are moving from the noun adulterer to a description of a "pure person". Okay. Enlighten me What is a pure person and where does the Qur'an reference marriage requirements of a "pure" person? I ask this because too many times people associate purity with virginity and this ayat seems to be encompassing more than just a situation involving a virgin bride/groom (which is what Khi seems to be pointing out).

Salaam Salikah,
Sometimes using the opposite would better describe the case.
We say in Arabic something like this "With Contrasts, things will clearly show!" That was one way of explaining my understanding of the Ayah 243, so please don't be confused!
I used 'pure' to describe the individual who is committed to righteousness as opposed to the 'adulterer' who is committed to the sin of adultery (violating the commitment of marriage).Okay. Enlighten me What is a pure person and where does the Qur'an reference marriage requirements of a "pure" person?
I believe you can find the marriage requirement in

I don?t see that Ayah 243 speaks about virginity at all.
Purity and virginity can be two different things. -
Salam,
I'm new around here. I find the site free-minds.org quite interesting and have been reading about the problem of adultery & marrying an adulterer. I want to know if anyone can guide me to the exact translation of the concerned verse. Does it really state that an adulterer must not marry any but an adulteress or does it state that the adulterer does not marry any but an adulteress etc? I'm asking because I don't know Arabic, especially not Quranic Arabic. I can see how this applies if a person takes the trouble to find out about his/her spouse-to-be before they actually get married but what about (as can often happen) a person finds out after marriage that his/her spouse has had extramarital sex before the marriage. What should that person do? Divorce? What if the couple now has children? What if the person really loves his/her spouse and is ready to forgive him/her for what has occurred? If the person continues the marriage, is s/he her/himself sinful for remaining married to an adulterer/adulteress? This seems a little illogical to me.
I actually tend to agree with the Quranic translator Muhammad Asad on this matter. Please check out his translation of the verse. But I would like to know what the Arabic words used in the verse literally mean.
God bless...
