why 'submission'?
-
just a thought, but why is only the interpretations of the words eslam and moslem usually focussed around 'submission'?
this may be one shade of meaning, but how about 'making peace'? in the sense of making peace with God?
just a thought, as i say roll

The word 'submission', imo, refers to the surrender of one's will to Allah. That is, realising that Allah's will is the only will which endures, and we are nothing but ants to a vast creation. It is the act of submitting one's will to the one god which makes one a 'muslim' because denying it would be following falsehoods.

yes but seeing as the root syn-lam-mym is centered around 'peace' and 'safety' etc, is 'making peace' such a bad interpretation?

Hello All,
I don't like the word "submission" either. It sounds harsh and cruel and it has too much conotations with force and power-play between the weak and the powerful.

Yes, we are weak compared to Allah. So?
That implies God is a tyrant. God as a oppressor. This is such an "anthromopopic" understanding of Divinity. We need to develop more intuitive and imaginative understanding of God that goes beyond these kind of human understanding of power-relationship and attribute it to God.

How? It's the obvious truth. Allah > all. Thus, we submit our will to it. What's so tyranical about it?

How is it obvious truth? Buddhist and Mystics will disagree with it.
For a mystic or a buddhist, you don't submit to the divine, you become identical with it....Regards,

Peace,
Has anyone tried swimming against a rip??????
It's no use, you'll eventually get tired and the rip will take you away.
The suggested method for dealing with rips (according to lifesavers) is to go with the rip until you reach an area where there is no rip and swim safely to shore.

Thanks for the advice. But do you not have an opinion on this? Is submission the word to use or not?

How is a budhist or a 'mystic' stance relevant here, since the poster asked the question of 'submission' with Islam in mind?

I said we need to develop a more intuitive and imaginative understanding of divinity. Mystic stance is relevant here. Sufis are mystics of Islam and their concept of divinity is not based on submission....

yes, but what does anyone think of my proposition of 'making peace', at least, linguistically? oops

Why? So it seems more politically correct? I don't see the point behing adhering to a more 'imaginative' understanding, or one that seems more in-line with the current state of political righteousness because to me the truth is the truth no matter how it's spoken. Fact is, if you're muslim, you believe that Allah is greater than us. To you it may seem tyranical, but to me it's natural.
yes, but what does anyone think of my proposition of 'making peace', at least, linguistically? ops
Making peace comes once you've surrendered your will to the one god, once you've realised that the only truth is god and from god stems all truth.

You know the Truth do you? Well I don't. When it comes to God there are no Absolute Truths and therefore we need to be more intuitive and imaginative in trying to understand something of this Absolute Truth.
But the question is asked why "submission". I say submission has oppressive meanings and therefore I don't like this word. You say it is natural to be submissive. But I say others will not agree with you. Mystics for example have different concept of divinity with being submissive...

I meant to say Mystics have a different concept of divinity WITHOUT being submissive...

Lote, what do you reckon about eslam as being 'making peace' then?
Also guys, you wont believe this probably, but at work I came across the name of someone called 'Islamuddeen'! lol
No, I am not joking, someone actually has that as a name shock
