    peace to all,

we have a common practice among the sunnis and other sects of reciting Quran even without understanding it. Even the academicaly educated ppl believe that it gives some sort of reward. Tabligh ppl also spreading these teaching to the mass ppl.

What do you ppl think about it ? and what does the Quran say ?

    peace

Hmm, I discuss it with my friends once. They say 'Even if you don't understand it, it'll give you peace of mind.'

Although to me it would make as much sense as reading the manual for a Nokia cell phone in the original language . Sure, it may sound cool, but you still won't understand how to use the phone.

And there's also the 'sacralization' of the Arabic language which pervades non-Arab-speaking Muslim societies, IMO. Back home I still see the opinion that Arabic is considered a 'sacred' language or something.

A comedy show I saw years ago made fun of this sacralization. An Arab visited his nephew in an Indonesian suburb. The locals think he's an ulama and asked him to lead prayers. As the Arab does not speak Indonesian, his nephew translated for him. The man spoke in Arabic to refuse their request. The crowd answered 'Amen'! Angrily, the Arab man said, 'Why do you say Amin, I wasn't praying, you're all stupid!' And the crowd answered.... 'Amin...'

It is imperative that all muslims have translation of Koran and Hadiths so that they can decide for themselve of the truth of the matter so that power can be shifted from the ignorant mullahs who preach hatred!

          Regards,

I for one don't believe this is the best approach.

I'll opt for a wider understanding of Arabic. After all, all translations are flawed, and translators can inject their own biases into the translation. Only the original Arabic text is reliable.

how abt these verse ? do they have any relation to this topic ?

And the example of those who disbelieve is like one who repeats what he has heard of calls and shouts; deaf, dumb, and blind, they do not understand.

The worst creatures with God are the deaf and dumb who do not understand.

                    Peace all,

I would like to additionally quote the following ayaat

3119 .........We have made clear for you the signs if you comprehend.
1025 .........It is such that We clarify the revelations to a people who think.
3028 .........It is such that We clarify the revelations for a people who have sense.

One cannot think, use sense or reason without understanding first.

                    Also the following ayaat

244 Do you order the people to do good, but forget yourselves, while you are reciting the Scripture? Do you not understand?

2170 And if they are told "Follow what God has sent down," they Say "No, we will follow what we found our fathers doing!" What if their fathers did not understand anything and were not guided?

"Do they not ponder (tadabbaru) in the Quran? If it was from any other than Allah they would have found maximum contradictions" 482

"Do they not ponder (tadabbaru) on the Quran? Or are there locks on their hearts?

And finally the purpose of sending down this book as follows

"A Scripture that We have sent down to you, that is blessed, so that they may ponder (LI-yaddabbaroo) upon its verses, and so that those with intelligence will take heed" 3829

When the purpose is ignored nothing can be gained out of it.

                            Salaam all,

Well just reading the Quran in Arabic language without knowing Arabic is no meaning at all.

We have to understand the advice and so on which God show us throughout the Quran.

So of course it is much better to find a good translation of Quran in your own language or a language you do understand.

But even that you can have hard to understand what God really mean .
So therefore we must of course want to be guided and then follow the guidence, uphold it.To watch up for a messenger from God is recommend.
I believe that the messengers didn't end with Prophet Muhammad.

But when we have found a messenger if we do, then we have to be honest and sincere of following and trusting this messenger.

I think no ordinary believer would fully understand the scripture from Allah without follow a living messenger.

                            Peace
                            Sis Majidah

                              SaLaM

I remember when my father forced me to go to a mosque and learn the Quran byheart. I had absolutely no idea what i was recieting. When i was little, i knew about 10-20 Surahs by heart. Now i know just one. Even in school ( in Dubai) this was common. We were given tests by randomly asking us to reciet a paragraph from the Quran. I was against it then, and im against it now. That is a true defination of being a parrot. The kind that is mentioned in the Quran. I now have 10 translations of the Quran for me to read and understand what each one is saying. This is what i believe God wants us to do.

I wonder if the Arabic-speaking people here face the same issues? Because they don't have this language barrier us non-Arabs encounter.

Quran was written down in Aramiac. Unless someone's native language is the Quranic Aramiac, I think we all face this problem.. arab or non - arab.

                                    peace Andya, all,

Many native Arabs have difficulty understanding 'al quran' in terms of its Arabic, due to their conditioning to modern Arabic and the unfamiliar grammatical construction.

That is what I have heard (from native Arabs) and read.

                                    Wakas

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

And also, just like many different translations in english alone, There are many different trasnlations in arabic too. So with them, the face the same problem a christian or a jew or a muslim would while reading their respective books. That can also be a form of recieting the Quran with the wrong understanding. Or in some cases, no understanding at all.

18110 Say "I am but a man like yourselves, (but) the inspiration has come to me, that your Allah is one Allah. whoever expects to meet his Lord, let him work righteousness, and, in the worship of his Lord, admit no one as partner.

649 The Day that He assembles you (all) for a Day of Assembly,- that will be a Day of mutual loss and gain and those who believe in Allah and work righteousness,- He will remove from them their ills, and He will admit them to Gardens beneath which Rivers flow, to dwell therein for ever that will be the Supreme Achievement.

I agree with you though that, unless the individual reads and gains understanding of the ayats, then, the purpose of Al-Quran--to be guided, cannot be attained.

                                        Peace.

                                          Salaam PRIEST_BOKMEI,

I agree with you though that, unless the individual reads and gains understanding of the ayats, then, the purpose of Al-Quran--to be guided, cannot be attained.

Certainly, anyone can read knowing the Arabic but the core issue lies in ones comprehension level to understand the message as it relates to natural, truthful and absolute laws.

Pesonally, I believe the message is not understood by nit-picking on alphabets and words but by contextual understanding as per our Ways of Life to better understand the specifics of these very alphabets and words applied to the verses throughout the Quran in consistency and reason. What say you?

Btw, you're rockin at MWU but noticed some resistance and resentments. O well, quite understood. )

                                          Take care and GOD bless.
