As the saying goes "Everything is fair in love and war". I believe one can use depection in war. But not as a lie but rather more of a strategy. In my opinion, the general or commander will have to take precaution to make sure that his/her side wins the war and if that means using deception, then so be it. If i was raging a war, i would decite my enemy. Killing is allowed in war but not outside war. I guess, in war rules change. Even salat. Hmmm

PEACE, DANISH,
Peace PRIEST_BOKMEI,
Is lying permissable as a part of strategy in war?
That woud be devastating. I believe, lying can be justified under specific umbrella and within reason. What say you, my friend?
I say you are correct, good brother. The two cardinal strategies of war, are deception and surprise. Btw, is justified and permissable equivalent concepts/terms in regard to war and lying?

PEACE, BUZZOR,
Peace guys,
Is lying permissable as a part of strategy in war?
This is something I've been wondering about, as deceit can be a wonderful tool in warefare, as can espionage, both things which are frowned upon in terms of the quran.
? ?
Can you post an ayat where espionage is frowned upon? I'm just curious?

Peace all,
864 And if they wish to deceive you, then God is sufficient for you. He is the One who supported you with His victory and with the believers.
According to this sign, The God promises to protect and support the believers from deception in war, but does not seem to allow deception in return.

It doesn't specifically say that it's wrong to deceive in war though.
As for the whole lie issue, my own take is I try to tell the truth everytime. I'm not considerate in terms of other people's feelings.
This got me into trouble more times than I imagine. For some reason people would prefer to lie and/or sugarcoat their sayings instead of telling the truth.
Maybe the choice is between lying and silence for some people?

They prefer the bliss of ignorance...Regards,

4913 O you who believe, you shall avoid much suspicion, for some suspicion is sinful. And do not spy on one another, nor shall you backbite one another. Would one of you enjoy eating the flesh of his dead brother? You certainly would hate this. You shall observe God. God is Redeemer, Merciful.
As I implied, im not very sure on this one ?

Peace be upon you,
(371) You, The Book's people, why do you confuse/mix/cover/dress the correct/truth with the falsehood and you hide/conceal the correct/truth and you are knowing?
(242) And do not confuse/mix/cover the correct/truth with the falsehood, and you hide/conceal the correct/truth and you are knowing.
In a forum about Peacefulness(Islam), why is there so much concern with "war strategy"?

According to this sign, The God promises to protect and support the believers from deception in war, but does not seem to allow deception in return.
It also promises victory... And since Muslims are never victorious in war, this means that verse is a false statement .....
....

Peace be upon you,
The word muslim describes one who is peaceful, so I am not sure which War involves "muslims". It is the religionists like the crusading christians who enjoy war so much. Once we free our minds of these religious dividing mindsets, then we can be more like YOUR beloved savior is said to have been.
I saw a good sign amongst the protestors outside of George Bush's home, it said "Who would Jesus Bomb?"
You get it?

The ayat qualifies suspicion and spying, meaning, if the translation is correct that, some spying/suspicion is justified. Also, the ayat is directed toward believers and not humanity at large.

And with respect to the initial question...
If a person gave you an ultimatum and said you must say you are wearing a blue top (even though you are really wearing a red top), i.e. say a lie, or they will murder the person next to you... what would you do?
The God knows what is in the hearts.

....It could also mean the other way around, i.e. Muslims are not what they claim to be.

God will not hold you for your unintentional oaths, but He will hold you for what oaths you have made binding; its cancellation shall be the feeding of ten poor from the average of what you feed your family, or that you clothe them, or that you free a slave; whoever cannot find shall fast for three days; this is a cancellation for making your oaths when you swear. And be careful from making oaths. It is such that God clarifies for you His revelations that you may be thankful.

There is no justificaltion for lieing. None in the Quran.
Wakas's example can be found in the Quran in 16106...
Any one who, after accepting faith in Allah, utters Unbelief,- except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in Faith - but such as open their breast to Unbelief, on them is Wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a dreadful Penalty.
16106 suggests that it is permissible to renounce Islam (while secretly still remaing frim in Faith) if one is forced to. This is relevant to the Spanish Inquistion that forced Muslims to renounce Islam (or be killed), for example.
In this case, as I understand 16106, these Muslims would be allowed to lie to the Inquistion.

Thats is a very good example of twisting the verse. That verse is meant for people who are forced to say they dont believe in Allah due to fear of life. That is completely different than lieing about if you are cheating on ur wife/husband. The verse zenje gave is for oath. Not Lie. There is no justification for a lie
Khalifa
Those who disbelieve in GOD, after having acquired faith, and become fully content with disbelief, have incurred wrath from GOD. The only ones to be excused are those who are forced to profess disbelief, while their hearts are full of faith.Yusuf Ali

Whoso disbelieveth in Allah after his belief - save him who is forced thereto and whose heart is still content with the Faith - but whoso findeth ease in disbelief On them is wrath from Allah. Theirs will be an awful doom.Shakir
He who disbelieves in Allah after his having believed, not he who is compelled while his heart is at rest on account of faith, but he who opens (his) breast to disbelief -- on these is the wrath of Allah, and they shall have a grievous chastisement.Sher Ali
Whoso disbelieves in Allah after he has believed - save him who is forced to make a declaration of disbelief while his heart finds peace in faith - but such as open their breast to disbelief, on them is Allah's wrath; and for them is decreed a severe punishment."Progressive Muslims"
Whoever rejects God after having believed; except for one who is forced while his heart is still content with belief; but the one who opens his chest to rejection, then they will have a wrath from God and they will have a great retribution. -

Salaam Jaxal,
You're right. I am not suggesting it is okay to lie in your example above. Neither is it okay to lie in general.
I am saying there exists at least one very particular circumstance that allows lying - the circumstance of 16106.
Peace.
