Love is great as a part of life, but not if it is the heart of life.

    Hi,

Just out of curiousity, do you in that case think that life could exist without love?

      Peace openurmind,

I think life does exist without love (sorry to butt in Natu), we can see the results in the news. Life without love is not a happy or fruitful life and you learn less. People who feel better (people in love) tend to do better!

        Salam Nural,

The negativity you see in the news is part of life, yet in other news you also see the loving part of life. One can not exist without the other. This is the point I am trying to make. Love is at the heart of life as well as fear, they are both the opposite forces in this dual-natured life and one can not do without the other as long as we lack the absolute knowledge. The lack of the absolute knowledge is the reason why fear exists. And do not under-estimate the force of fear. All choices and actions we make/do is either based on love or fear, any other reason is driven of these two great forces. And there is balance, one force can not overtake the other as long as we live.
When I asked if life could exist without love, I did not mean the life of an individual only, I meant life in general and I think Natu meant the same thing when he said that love is great when it is part of life but it is not great if it is at the heart of life. But I believe that love is at the heart of not only life, but at the heart existance.

This is the main problem why most people having trouble understanding life. Namely using labels and words while not knowing what they truly mean. Love, which is a universal force became an individual feeling that we can describe according to our own experience then we fail to realise its true impact on life in general or the reason why is exists in the first place.
Why do we have this conversation?
Because we are intelligent human beings.
Why do we have to know the true meanings of everything like love, fear, intelligence, expectations, etc.?
Because we do not know there meaning. Because we were born without knowledge, yet we were given the ability to acquire it.
Why do we have this ability?
It is like asking why do we have to eat?
Is it because we have the ability to eat or because our bodies need the energy which is extracted from the food we eat?
Acquiring knowledge is similar to eating and drinking. We have the ability to acquire knowledge because only with this knowledge (besides our intelligence) could we be whole.

Books are full of knowledge, the Holly Quran is full of knowledge. The whole universe is full of knowledge. Every seed, every cell every cure, every theory is full of knowledge. Knowledge is out there, just like the food we eat. And just like our bodies extract the energy from the food, it is our intelligence that has the ability to extract the energy of knowledge. Whether if this knowledge is in a holly book or in a grain, without our intelligence it is forever wasted. If we do not eat we not only waste the food, we also waste our life, we die. If we do not acquire knowledge, we do not only waste knowlegde, we waste the meaning of our existance. We were given intelligence for a reason, we were given realisations for a reason, and we were born without knowledge for a reason. The process of life is not limited to the realisation of the meaning of a book or how we behave. It is the process by which our intelligence reunion with the universal knowledge and intelligence. It is the process that is taking us from ignorance to knowing, from separation to unity.
The force of fear is the force of ignorance, while the force of love is the force of knowing. We fear what we do not know, we hate because we fear. Our lack of knowledge created fear and separation from the rest of the world and from each others. The more we know, the more we realise that we are one with all, universe and each other and the more we love. The force of love is more fundamental to us; it is deeply rooted inside us, in our souls. It helps us wonder and ask questions; and our intelligence allows us to regain the reunion with the source of all knowledge.

        God bless

Individal perception is the real reason why this thread even exists. Can anyone explain how they feel when they are hungry or thirsty?

As well as the difficulty in expression of such feelings, the greater difficulty lies in coming to common grounds exactly what the sensation is.

For example, some people might feel a KFC because they havde't had any chicken, for a decade, some may feel a KFC becuase they haven't eaten anything at all for a three days, and some people may feel a KFC like our brother Jaxal does.

The aim of this thread (IMHO) is not far from trying to draw a picture of the God

          1. No medium or combination of mediums can ever give a full image.

          2. Any partial representation in any medium will always be based on individual interpretation.

          3. Clinical analysis is simply not possible forsuch an abstract sensation/emotion/state of mind.

------------------------------> But all that doesn't mean we can't ever understand it - we understand all that we need - in the same way we understand all that we need to understand about the God from al-quran. For further understanding we must do our own homework and maintain the connection we have been given.

So, putting it short love is...

a word that each and every individual applies his/her own context, understanding, and implication.

                Peace,

Thank you openurmind, for the clarifying post. Our disagreement came from me understanding life as an individual life, I agree that when we take the global society there is a continous battle between these two forces, good and evil, love and hate etc. Whether the majority is on the hate side or love side is a different discussion.

Certainty is helpful in this journey of life, and certainty is acheived by obtaining valuable and useful knowledge and when applied in the right situations we see the success and the beauty of the game (Very big game, not amusements)!.

But the confusion for people tends to come in understanding why the negative forces even exist if there is a God and why the balance must be acheived to get order and positive results in life. This isn't a free ride, we must give something in return, and it is the duty of the individuals with the knowledge and certainty to maintain a balance, to keep a control of such things. Even the people without elite knowledge have duties in societies, everyone who is capable should work hard in whatever fields they specialise to see a better quality of life. These can be things like governments running the economy properly (whether they should intervene as much or not), or it could be decision making for individuals in their daily lives. Knowledge is very handy for the individual and groups because when they know with certainty what results they can achieve with knowledge of certain techniques or ways then they will be motivated by the reward in the long run.

The assumption has been made that there are simply two paths, a positive and a negative. Although love and hate were used, I think these are not as suitable in explaining the concept as the words positive and negative are.

                Nural

                  What is Love?

Is it as some say conditioned or is it unconditioned?
Is love a feeling or state of being?
Is love absolute like a quality that can only be?
                  Does love have an opposite?
What is the opposite of Love?
What does religion say about Love?

I ask this question everyday.....hopefully on here it may be answered.....or maybe we just have to find out for ourselves.... ?

                    Salaam Ming-Lo,

Why is it so hard to deal with love?

Shouldn't it be more difficult to deal with hate?

                    Peace Sis Maria

                        Salaam,

Yes that is true, but for some reason (for me anyway), It's easier for me to understand hate (or should I say strong dislike, since i can't say I've ever went as far as to hate someone) then to understand love.......I don't know why......It's pretty baffling... ?

                          Salaam Sis Ming-Lo,

Well it depends what kind of Love u are talking about!?

I mean the romantic love isn't so hard to understand because that is your feelings of attractions to the opposite gender.

But the more wide understandings of Love is more tricky to explain and understand.

We have a member here named Lote-Tree he is dealing with this issue very much, hope he cn explain better.

                          Peace sis Maria

                                Salam all,

My take on this topic. Feel free to share your views.

                                What is Love?

Is it as some say conditioned or is it unconditioned? Conditioned
Is love a feeling or state of being? Feeling
Is love absolute like a quality that can only be? No
Does love have an opposite? No
What is the opposite of Love? Feelings don't have opposites. They're each on their own.
What does religion say about Love? Define religion first. We don't need religion to have a say on any feeling. We learn that on our own.

Love, I think, is a feeling like any other. Something that has to grow. No such thing as love at first sight. That's lust because we're attracted to something physical about that person. If you consider love as a state of being, then does that mean hate is also a state of being? Everything has to stem off from somewhere. So it has to be conditioned. We grow to appreciate something or someone and after much understanding, we will eventually come to love that object or thing. It cannot be absolute because it encompasses all the good things like care, share, kindness, niceness and yes all those "good" words. Sort of like a collaboration of "good" stuff. I don't think it has an opposite. It's on it's own. Just like how hate is something that has to grow from somewhere. You can't suddenly say, "I hate this or that." People just say those things senselessly. Hate is derived from strong disliking. So strong that your ego takes over and you see no good in someone or something anymore. Difference when it comes to love is, the ego is dropped. Love with ego is a totally different ball game. So we won't go there.

Adding on to that, there is no such thing as "feeling as a whole with someone else" because of love. You're on a whole in the first place. You weren't half before the "love of your life" came along. So when people have this concept and their "love" breaks down, they don't feel on a whole anymore. Some are distressed, some are depressed and completely go nuts, yes, literally. One has to learn to love oneself first before one can learn to love someone else. Also, no such thing as "he/she completes me". They should compliment each other. How can someone else complete who you are when you are yet to fully discover yourself? Most of us, sadly, have this misconception of love due to media influence. Agreed, most of us will deny this but it does have a strong influence on us, unconsciously. Love doesn't involve 2 people. You can love anyone based on the understanding above. The "special love" that occurs between couples, married or otherwise that's the one that takes 2 people (or more depending what you categorize "special love" as). Normally 2 people who have no understanding of what love is. They're always expecting things to be perfect and usually expecting the other person to change to fit according to their wants and needs. Yeah compromise yourself for someone else. Let them rule your life while you're at it. Any changes you make, it's best if it's done by yourself. Else, it will be imposed upon and will end up being insincere.

Then there is all that mambo jambo about "if you really love someone, you must let them go", "I love him/her so much yet I hate him/her". First of all, understand this. So how does the concept of letting the other party go define true love? Wait, true love? You mean there is false love too? scoffs If that's the case, if they don't come back then they were never meant for you? So the whole basis of your faith in love is a game of chance? If that's the case, one would have no or many lovers depending how long they want to bother to wait. And you can't do 2 extremes such as love and hate at the same time. Also you can't be extremely happy and extremely sad at the same time. I believe this doesn't make sense. If we're able to reach that stage, perhaps that's why some of become insane.

People have been asking about love time and time again. No one has a solid answer. They don't have because they don't think and reflect. This is my understanding of love and is purely my own after eliminating bias. Feel free to comment. Peace!

Perhaps there is only one emotion which is LOVE and HATE is the absence of LOVE?

                                  very good.

Love with ego is a totally different ball game. So we won't go there.

                                  It's called Romance perhaps?

Adding on to that, there is no such thing as "feeling as a whole with someone else" because of love.

It is more like it gives you a sense of completeness within.

You're on a whole in the first place. You weren't half before the "love of your life" came along.

Perhaps LOVE is always within us? and that other individual unlocks this in us and allows us to express it?

So when people have this concept and their "love" breaks down, they don't feel on a whole anymore. Some are distressed, some are depressed and completely go nuts, yes, literally.

All of these things play a part. But when you love without EGO then perhaps not?

One has to learn to love oneself first before one can learn to love someone else.

True. But also others can teaches something that we can never learn on our own. Others can guide us on to something that we can't seem to grasp on our own. LOVE makes us grow, not in each others shadow, but like sun flowers towards the sun?

Also, no such thing as "he/she completes me".

Perhaps the he/she, show us that we are already complete by ourself?

Most of us, sadly, have this misconception of love due to media influence. Agreed, most of us will deny this but it does have a strong influence on us, unconsciously.

I think Romantic Love is complicated by Sexual Desire.

Then there is all that mambo jambo about "if you really love someone, you must let them go",

Letting go is not easy. But when you ready to let go, you feel a certain liberation and after letting go you perhaps understand little more what it means to LOVE.

So how does the concept of letting the other party go define true love?

Because LOVE seeketh not itself to please?

Wait, true love? You mean there is false love too?

Yes, just like you have TRUTH and LIES?

So the whole basis of your faith in love is a game of chance?

Perhaps it is more to do with the process of trying to understand LOVE?

Also you can't be extremely happy and extremely sad at the same time. I believe this doesn't make sense. If we're able to reach that stage, perhaps that's why some of become insane.

Perhaps you need to go "insane" a little before you understand what "sanity" is? Perhaps you need to descend to hell before you appreciate what paradise is? And perhaps LOVE can shows us both HEAVEN and HELL within us?

People have been asking about love time and time again. No one has a solid answer.

Yes, sayeeth, that is the case. No one understands LOVE! -)

This is what we yearn for- the ideal of love between two people

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
                                  That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

                                  Sonnet 116 - William Shakespeare

This is what we get, the reality

When my love swears that she is made of truth
I do believe her, though I know she lies,
That she might think me some untutor'd youth,
Unlearned in the world's false subtleties.
Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young,
Although she knows my days are past the best,
Simply I credit her false speaking tongue
On both sides thus is simple truth suppress'd.
But wherefore says she not she is unjust?
And wherefore say not I that I am old?
O, love's best habit is in seeming trust,
And age in love loves not to have years told
Therefore I lie with her and she with me,
And in our faults by lies we flatter'd be.

                                  Sonnet 138 - William Shakespeare

                                  Regards,

                                    Salam all,

My take on this topic. Feel free to share your views.

Peace Sayeeth, here are my views and feel free to ask me why.

Is it as some say conditioned or is it unconditioned? Conditioned

You say love is conditioned but you never mentioned what is it conditioned on. Is love conditioned to your being or not being satisfied with the object you Love?
Let me tell how conditioned states work. You set rules, imaginations, expectations, and your mind stores them as images for future use. When you meet someone or something and you begin to feel this conditioned love, your mind is in reality telling you that the subject fits the description and your expectations of becoming satisfied. Should the subject shows signs that are not in line with the images you have in your mind, you begin to feel frustrated and slowly pull out as your mind rejects the subject. This conditioned love you are talking about is not love at all, you could call it personal satisfaction or liking.
I call love unconditioned because love is the harmony between everything around us, it holds the whole universe together and we are getting glimpses of it is when we live in harmony with an object for sometime.

Is love a feeling or state of being? Feeling

This harmony is always there, it is not a feeling, it is a state that is always there no matter what you feel. It is the universal love, the knowing without expectations. The feelings we call love are nothing but chemicals created by our personal experiences, understanding and our selfish ego. Love is inside everyone as a state, whether they feel it or not. Some people feel it when they feel the harmony with someone, others do not feel it when they are so blinded by their ego and material life. When you feel love, you are feeling the true state of who we are behind the opposites.

Is love absolute like a quality that can only be? No

A quality of a thing is always there whether you feel it or not. The absolute behind our existence is the source of love that forces the harmony without failing. This absolute could not be changed by whatever you feel or understand. It is untouchable.

Does love have an opposite? No

Love has an opposite, born to blind us from its absolute existence. I like to thing of love as the absolute knowing that is aware of the absolute truth, while the opposite of love, is the ignorance, the blind eye that is not allowing us seeing the truth.

What is the opposite of Love? Feelings don't have opposites. They're each on their own.

We fear what we do not know, and we are born not knowing that we are part of the universal harmony, it is part of the reason why we are here. The whole universe is made of only two things. Knowledge and intelligence, everything you see around you is made of knowledge put together with intelligence. We are born with no knowledge yet have been given the intelligence to acquire the universal knowledge. Living without knowledge, gave birth to the opposite of love (The knowing) FEAR (the lack of knowledge). We were born in fear in a state of love that we couldn't feel. Love and fear became the two forces behind the duality we live. Duality is simply explained as ?life?. Life is based on Love and fear, light and dark, hot and cold, negative and positive. Any choice we make is based on this duality, either love or fear. Any feeling we have is based on either light emotions like joy and contentment (product of love) or the shadow emotions (product of fear) like hate and resentment. Everything we do or feel depends on our understanding of who we are vs. the universe.

What does religion say about Love? Define religion first. We don't need religion to have a say on any feeling. We learn that on our own.
You are right here, religion has nothing to same about the most important force in our universe.

                                    Take care,

                                      Salam LoteTree,

Thank you for your comments. Always a great thing to see people putting across their views. Helps understanding the issue at hand better. Looking forward to your comments on the questions and clarifications that I've posed.

If you consider love as a state of being, then does that mean hate is also a state of being?

Perhaps there is only one emotion which is LOVE and HATE is the absence of LOVE?
Hate being a love absentee is absurd. So if I have no love for someone, does that automatically mean I hate them? Highly unlikely. Perhaps you'd like to elaborate on this?

                                      It's on it's own.

                                      Very good.
Hehe. I don't quite get this part. Are you agreeing with me here?

Difference when it comes to love is, the ego is dropped.

                                      very good.
                                      Same here. Agreeing with me?

Love with ego is a totally different ball game. So we won't go there.

                                      It's called Romance perhaps?
Not sure what to call it but I believe that is what people generally conceptualize as love. Perhaps you could elaborate here as well.

Adding on to that, there is no such thing as "feeling as a whole with someone else" because of love.

It is more like it gives you a sense of completeness within.
Having a sense of completeness within can be achieved on one's own, right? One has to feel on a whole first in order to experience something as great as love. Perhaps you could elaborate here.

You're on a whole in the first place. You weren't half before the "love of your life" came along.

Perhaps LOVE is always within us? and that other individual unlocks this in us and allows us to express it?
Agreed that love could have always been in us from the start. But how could a particular individual come and unlock the love you might have within yourself when you don't know for sure the state you're in with that person? That is, whether you're really in love with that person or are you being blinded by physical attractiveness coupled with sexual attractiveness? Please elaborate here as well.

So when people have this concept and their "love" breaks down, they don't feel on a whole anymore. Some are distressed, some are depressed and completely go nuts, yes, literally.

All of these things play a part. But when you love without EGO then perhaps not?
Agreed on this. That is what I'm trying to find out. What do you think?

One has to learn to love oneself first before one can learn to love someone else.

True. But also others can teaches something that we can never learn on our own. Others can guide us on to something that we can't seem to grasp on our own. LOVE makes us grow, not in each others shadow, but like sun flowers towards the sun?
Agreed that others can teach us something we can never learn on our own. However that depends on how well they have grapsed the subject in the first place. If someone has a bad experience in love before you and you happen to have one too, that person may "teach you the realities of love and how it sucks big time" and you having a lack of understanding on that issue may choose to listen to their perspective instead since they're supposedly "more experienced in love". So, in that angle, they may teach you the incorrect things here. It takes alot of patience and sense to listen to someone who talks sensible things about love especially after you having been through a bad episode in love. Agreed? Please shed some insight here.

Also, no such thing as "he/she completes me".

Perhaps the he/she, show us that we are already complete by ourself?
How will they show us that we're complete when they may hardly know us from the start? They may feel that they've known you for ages but they may have just known what you've wanted to show and/or what they've wanted to see. This is in accordance with the concept of people changing themselves to "match" the other party especially to gain more trust. Even if what you say is true, under what assumption will they show us that we're complete? Please elaborate.

Most of us, sadly, have this misconception of love due to media influence. Agreed, most of us will deny this but it does have a strong influence on us, unconsciously.

I think Romantic Love is complicated by Sexual Desire.
                                      Totally agree with you here.

Then there is all that mambo jambo about "if you really love someone, you must let them go",

Letting go is not easy. But when you ready to let go, you feel a certain liberation and after letting go you perhaps understand little more what it means to LOVE.
Which comes back to the logical question, WHY let someone you really love go? If you really love that person and vice versa, wouldn't you want to keep one another at all odds and not let them go because of any kind of obstacle? I believe this is only applicable if it's one-sided and the person has been in a daze all this while. And why is this concept only applicable to love amongst couples/lovers and not for everyone else? Please elaborate here.

So how does the concept of letting the other party go define true love?

Because LOVE seeketh not itself to please?
Then thou shall explainth what love seeketh.

Wait, true love? You mean there is false love too?

Yes, just like you have TRUTH and LIES?
Agreed. Truth is the opposite of falsehood. But we haven't determined what the opposite of love is. So how can there be a false love? Perhaps this false love is the "love of ego"? The love that we think it is but it's actually making us go bonkers? Please elaborate here.

So the whole basis of your faith in love is a game of chance?

Perhaps it is more to do with the process of trying to understand LOVE?
So we're supposed to try to understand love by having multiple lovers, setting them free and liberating ourselves and wait for one or more to come back to understand it? What do we learn from that? Please elaborate on this.

Interesting point here. Agree with you that it does take a little insanity to brush us up and awaken us. However when this insanity crosses the line, then you're going to plunge deeper. Question is, how to safeguard ourselves from not plunging that deep into insanity? Please give insight here.

People have been asking about love time and time again. No one has a solid answer.

Yes, sayeeth, that is the case. No one understands LOVE! -)
Maybe it's time we slowly unravelled this mystery within ourself.

Good poems that you're quoted! Salam!

                                        Salam openurmind,

Thank you too for your insightful comments. You seem to have a deep understanding of what love is in the universal concept. Knowing and Intelligence indeed. Looking forward to more indepth comments.

Interesting point here. When I mentioned love being conditioned, I actually said these words "We grow to appreciate something or someone and after much understanding, we will eventually come to love that object or thing. " So you're actually saying that conditioned love is not caused by daily happenings that cause us to condition (mould) our love for someone or something but based on a set of actual conditions, rules, expectations, goals etc? Looks like we have taken the same word conditioned and explained in different terms however please explain more on your concept of love being the harmony surrounding us. Interesting. Please elaborate on this.

When you feel love, you are feeling the true state of who we are behind the opposites
                                        .

So my concept of eliminating ego to experience real love is actually is line with your universal love concept. I'm interested to know what made you deduce that love is actually a state of mind (or being?). So, out of curiosity, do you feel the harmony within yourself or with someone? Please elaborate on this too.

A quality of a thing is always there whether you feel it or not. The absolute behind our existence is the source of love that forces the harmony without failing. This absolute could not be changed by whatever you feel or understand. It is untouchable.

Again, how did you come to deduce that this is absolute? Please elaborate.

Love has an opposite, born to blind us from its absolute existence. I like to thing of love as the absolute knowing that is aware of the absolute truth, while the opposite of love, is the ignorance, the blind eye that is not allowing us seeing the truth.

How does one come about to know the absolute truth through love? Do you mean to say if you can eliminate all bits of ego and come in harmony with the universal love, you'll be able to achieve knowing absolute truth? Correct me if I'm wrong but is this something like reaching nirvana though enlightenment? If so, how then does one come into existance with the universal love around him? Start eliminating the ego first, yes. But what next? Interesting concept. Ignorance, in your concept, is an obstacle to reaching truth. Ignorance is also caused by being misinformed or being unaware or having disregard for something or anything. How does this ignorance constitute being the opposite of love? Do elaborate here.

Well put forth. Interesting. Perhaps we could go into detail on this another time. I'm always up for learning through various perspectives.

                                          Taken from here

                                          22/06/02
What is love? Well, I have pondered over this question a little and I came up with my own personal definition (not today, I've had this theory for some time). It consists of three criteria both partners should fulfill, although you may get away with having two. Listed in order of importance

                                          (1) You must connect spiritually (this means you should most likely share the same core beliefs, which may include both sharing a belief in God or similar morals for example)

                                          (2) You must connect mentally (this means having personalities/minds that connect, which may include level of intelligence, sense of humour etc.)

                                          (3) You must connect physically (this simply means you should be attracted to each other)

It seems simple enough. All I did was realise that humans consist of three areas which need satisfied, spiritual, mental and physical, thus built my theory around those aspects. Another, more succinct, definition of love I have read which I liked is "to view an imperfect person perfectly".

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.
