      peace,

well, if one takes it as not eating, then what is eating? Therein lies the answer.

      From
      http//dictionary.reference.com/search?q=eat

To take into the body by the mouth for digestion or absorption.

      Does smoke get absorbed? Yes.

Yea, so far, i have not seen any evidence that smoking is in any way shape or form equal to eating or drinking. Its smoke. Its not killing my hunger or thirst. Well, i guess it increases thirst. But certainly not quenches it. Can anyone bring any evidence to sujjest otherwise?

i do think smoking breaks the fast. Fasting is about self control and purification as well as not eating and drinking...

                peace,

It is a fact smoking quenches/resolves one's craving. If I thirst, and I drink water, this will resolve/quench this craving. So I assume your difference lies in the state of the food. I.e. one is gas-like, and conventional food being solid.

Thus, what state is smoke? Therein lies the answer to your question

Do you think smoking is the same as eating? It doesnt matter if its solid or gas or semi gas and solid. Its has nothing to do with hunger or thirst. Well, if anything, smoking increases the thirst. But as far as i know, God mentions eating , drinking and sexual intercourse when talking about fast. And the fact is, smoking does not qualify as eating, drinking or sexual intercourse LOLLLLL.

What you said in your first post would be true but in the context of food. Smoking is not food. Agree?

You are trying to make smoking equal to eating. Its not. We breath in oxygen from air which is also absorbed into our blood stream. Same happens when we breath from our mouth. Smoking also reduces weight gain. So now should everyone who wants to loose weight start smoking?

In your informed opinion, would you consider that the same as going out every morning and jogging?

Maybe i should stop breathing coz the oxygen might get absorbed into my blood stream and break my fast. roll

                        Peace Jaxal,

According to the definitions Wakas has given, smoking is technically eating. Smoking is also something that is done with premeditation or to make it easier with intent, or in another way...you do it deliberately. You don't need to smoke tobacco to live but you do need to breathe air. It's simple to see the difference.

I don't smoke while fasting because I recognize the benefits of abstinence (medically, psychologically etc). Anything unnecessary that the body does not need to 'absorb' deliberately is part of it, because cigarettes have an effect on your body which is a FACT. It's like saying, I can take medication while fasting because technically a pill is not food and has no nutritional value or hang on a minute...what if i smoke the damned pill eh? Thats not even eating is it? Where's the zippo, I need my pain meds NOW!

If someone can't give up smoking while fasting, maybe it's time to re evaluate the hold it has on the person as it's definitely something that is taken in and absorbed by the body by deliberate intent. What happens when you eat food? Nutrients and other stuff get absorbed by your bloodstream? So does tobacco smoke. It's in your bloodstream.

Does someone need God to tell them don't you dare smoke those bennies lad, while fasting?!? How about using our reason? There is no way one can compare breathing oxygen (naturally occuring biological need) to inhaling a puff out of a cigarette for cripes sake...you need one to live and you need the other for whatever reason have you except survival.

Damn. Looks like i need to make up for a lot of fasts but regardless of that, smoking is not equal to eating. And God allows you to NOT fast if u need to take medicines.

                            peace,

I had already thought of the oxygen argument, and pre-empted this illogical argument with the "state of smoking" post. Oxygen is a gas, smoke is not, it is a suspension of a solid material in a gas, properly called a colloid suspension. If this is coupled with sister Nadia's comments about the necessity of oxygen V the addition of tobacco/smoking, the answer is obvious.

However, it is only obvious to those who do not have a personal bias. An example of bias being they are smokers themselves and want to believe smoking does not break a fast and thus delude themselves.

And in case it was not clear, my view is that smoking is eating, its just not conventionally thought of as that. Simple.

Oxygen and air pollutants are absorbed throught breathing. Does breathing break the fast?
