          Peace,

I cannot eat candy so it means nothing to me. However it is special day of the pagan/wiccan calendar.

overrated...and kind of stupid too.....All year around you tell your children not to talk or take things from strangers, but because it's HALLOWEEN...you send them to there house for candy?!?!.......kind of makes parents double standard in a way lol.....

what Joe said. And it is a ridiculous tradition.

I dont understand the symbolism of the pumpkin though, if there is any at all. Other than it is easy make scary faces with lights in them?

                Peace,

I'm not sure if the trick-or-treating is part of the celebration. I know the basic belief is that of honouring of the dead and communing with them. I think trick-or-treating may be a form of innovation.

                  Peace be upon you,

Well, I will be in the pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin!!

Seriously though, its fun to dress up in costumes and go to a costume party, this can be done anytime of the year.

But I do not support the candy part at all. Sugar is killing us all and destroying our "ruh"(energy). It is destroying our teeth so we cannot chew our food properly, etc etc.

The God informs us to eat that which is nutricious, should we teach our kids to beg for that which is worse?

                    Peace be upon you,

Also, I do not condone or support teaching young humans to FEAR anything. Fear is a serious obstacle in life and must be transcended.

Yeah...not to sure where it came in either, though I have heard that Halloween started in Ireland, because they believed that on nov.1, the spirits of the dead would comeback for a living soul, so the night before they'd try to make themselves look scary and make ridiculous noises to scare them off....or someting on the lines.....but anyway....ppl back in the day and their superstitions.....hilarious! roll

It's for the kids! Don't take it too seriously P

My kids are both 'Batman' this year... I just remembered, we took a photo of them in their costumes..giggle. I'll put it up here when I get home, God willing.

                          Peace be upon you all,

Yes, the kids! The time when they are MOST RECEPTIVE. When we should be shaping that water/mud before it becomes hardened clay.

Yes, I dont take haloween too seriously, but I do take sugar consumption seriously. Its something that I failed at when young and it is important for us to teach the children properly about it.

The costume part I have no problem with. It helps humans get out of thier "boxes".

Zenje, how could you let the little guy get the crappy Adam West Batman costume while the big guy gets the cool Christian Bale Batman outfit ? That's very unfair, dude!

                                      Now they're too cute!

Once we dressed my grandson as Batman and he looked in the mirror and was afraid of himself. Way funny. He's 14 now.

I happen to live near one of the most famous costume companies in New York where you can rent. We've been thinking about have a masqurade party this winter. Dressing up can be fun. I was amazed by one they have that looks like it's two people, one riding piggyback but it's one person. My grandchildren have agreed that's all they really thought was fun about Halloween anyway.

Every year we have our own "Family Appreciation Day". It includes food, food and more food. We exchange gifts so you know the kids love it. Since we pick the date there is no stress. We do it when it's good for everyone and postpone it for any reason. The last few years we picked after New Years. The sales are fantastic. We even wrap the gifts with Christmas, Hannakah, or whatever paper is on sale. It makes for great jokes and renders pagan symbols meaningless. We shop by what has the prettiest colors. ) We decorate and have pinatas (sp) full of treats and toys too. This year we'll add the costumes. No religious significance. We keep it real. My son-in-law calls it Islamica. lol

We do an even bigger one in the summer but outside and no gifts and the whole neighborhood attends. We hire chefs to tend the grills and have games and prizes. The three legged race and tug of war (men against women) is sooo much fun. We ex-sunni's know how to have fun. This one we call "Family Fun Day" and it's growing every year. I wish you all could be there!!!!

                                        Peace,

Halloween according to many historians is the day when the Northern European countries celebrated a seasonal solstice. They believed like one poster above already mentioned; that this was the time that the spirits where technically free. It was a very important holiday to these people because they felt they could talk to there deceased relatives and what not.

When Catholicism spread to northern Europe, the Church found it difficult to get these people to stop practicing this pagan ritual. Realizing that they could never get people to stop celebrating Halloween they just allowed it to become "ok" under the banner of the Church. It was not uncommon for the church to take a native diety and make it a saint so that the people could more easily assimilate themselves into the Catholic fold.

It was sort of like the New Years eve for the people. It is one of the Sabbats celebrated by Wiccans.
