    Peace.

It is beautiful and completely acceptable the slongan 'God alone Qur'an alone' but do we really understand what we mean?

Have we truly decided to forgo our desires and all other lords for Allah alone? Is this the practical reality of our way of living presently?

When we say Qur'an alone, do we mean we can not take guidance from any source for any aspect of our life apart from the Qur'an?

My understanding is that Allah is the only Legislator and al-Qur'an is the only book of legislation sent by Allah.

in matter of wisdom, we take it anywhere that it is found. We must always remember that al-Islam is our whole life and not just an aspect.

Do we need to depend on scientific discoveries yet they are not ecplicitely expressed in the Qur'an. I do accept that they explain the Qur'an and accept that they must conform to the Qur'an. Are we not depending on them for guidance on an aspect of our life?

    Thanks and peace

      Salaamun alaikum,

Is this slogan even valid 'God alone Quran alone' ?

Al-quraan itself doesn't advocate 'quran alone'. It says 'al-quraan' is 'tafseelul kitaab laa raiba fihi' (10/37). This indicates that al-quraan is the complete detailing of al-kitaab. Without actually invoking or engaging with al-kitaab in our lives, Al-quraan becomes an inert text. Remember , ayaat fil afaaq wa fil anfus (signs in the horizon and in your selves) is what clarifies al-quraan as being al-haqq (41/53). Therefore, without these signs, we can't possibly know that.

The right slogan is and always has been 'laa ilaha illa huwa (or Allah)'. This is the whole point of things.

'God alone Quran alone' would be akin to saying 'Destination alone Map alone' without actually taking the journey !!!

"there is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path" - Morpheus, The Matrix

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

I want to believe the slogan 'God alone and Qur'an alone' is in reaction to those acclaimed Muslims who have knowingly or ignorantly associated the prophets and some Imams with Allah and have also felt that the collection known as al-Hadith has a mandatory role to play in the religion of Allah. In this sense, the slogan is perfect.

My fear however is that this reaction is not so overstretched as to reject anything good that can be found elsewhere.

Allah urges us to contemplate and to travel round the world to learn things by ourselves. The signs of Allah which are found everywhere are explanations for the Qur'an.

That al-Qur'an is self explanatory does not mean that there can not be more explanation as we do observe in our practical life.

In Ideology, there is complete freedom and Allah can only advise. We are requested to accept only those things that we are convinced of. Awareness can not be imposed on anyone - a person has to understand it himself.

After we have accepted the authority of Allah out of conviction then we are requested to surrender to Him alone.

All forms of goodness, wisdom, knowledge, in and out of Quran is from our creator.
And taking all of it in our life, is what being a muslim is about.
Man is just a learner. And he would learn until death. God is the only one with absolute wisdom.

By Quran alone, I suppose we say, We accept only Quran as the message from God. 'hadith' is man made and hence open to logic and reasoning and questioning, just like all man made stuff is. We still can take good stuff from hadith, or from anywhere for that matter.

Our aim should be to live a righteous life, striving for wisdom and knowledge.

Not perfect, but understandable in my opinion. Perfection is a complete resorting to al-quraan which doesn't have this slogan.

My fear however is that this reaction is not so overstretched as to reject anything good that can be found elsewhere.

What can we possibly reject that's not found in al-quraan? I read voraciously but the only thing my extra-quranic reading does is to stimulate questions. Marxism for example stimulated some powerful questions such as distribution of wealth etc. However , Al-quraan is the one which answered that question.

You got it the wrong way round. Explantions of the signs of Allah everywhere are found in al-quraan.

'can only advise' ? Allah COMMANDS that you submit to Him but He doesn't force you into it. The word advice is in al-quraan but isn't used for Allah. Allah commands or 'ya'muru'.

                  peace,

Omeiza - I cannot recall a person using the phrase "God alone and Quran alone" saying they do not use any other sources for information/guidance in an absolute sense. Is it actually being used & understood as you suppose?

mq - As a side note I think the word "cliche" has an unecessary negative connotation at times. Somethings are overused for a reason. wink

                    .

That's a good point. I've always thought that the reason why Matrix-isms are so prolific is that they resonate with part of humanity's condition, whether we know it or not. Still...that was cliche of you You could have used one of Obi Wan's maxims, perhaps?

Eating food through the mouth is not explicitely stated in the Qur'an and it is good. There is no problem for me to read a book that talks about the proper way to use my mouth for eating or that tells me about maintaining the mouth. I will consider such a book to be an explanation for the instruction to eat and to be clean.

Somebody has said "I will accept a hadith that makes sense and it is in conformity with the Qur'an"

In reply, this person was told "If what is said in that hadith is in conformity to what is contained in the Qur'an then we do not need it as we already have it in the Qur'an. If it is against the Qur'an the case is even clearer"

Assuming I came across a hadith that says "The word of wisdom is the lost property of a Mumin, he takes it anywhere that it is found" What will be wrong for me to accept this statement even if it is from Iblis? Now, is there an explicit statement like this in the Qur'an?

Are we saying that during the life time of the prophet, he answered all questions and responded to people in all aspects of his life by just quoting the explicit statements of the Qur'an? Didn't he make some clarifications for those who needed it? Why are we here today making clarifications yet the Qur'an is there?

Is it not true that a statement as simple as "Allah is one" might need extra explanation?

While I do not rely on the collections known as al-Hadith, nonetheless, nothing will prevent me from accepting what is true regardless of where it is found and who has said it.

If I read a book of science and it reinforces my understanding of a concept in the Qur'an, can't I say that the book of science has explained the concept?

In Ideology, there is complete freedom and Allah can only advise. We are requested to accept only those things that we are convinced of. Awareness can not be imposed on anyone - a person has to understand it himself.

It makes no sense to say that Allah commands us to accept that He is one - Allah could only have appealed to our sense of reasoning to acknowledge that He is one.

The saying "There is no compulsion in the religion" is a statement of fact. Awareness is not by command but by explanation and reasoning.

In terms of belief, Allah appeals to our sense of reasoning but in legislation, He commands.

The command to submit to Allah completely without associating partner with Him is meant only for those who already believe that there is Allah. Allah could not have commanded a person who is not even aware of HIs existence.

Does anyone need a book to tell them to eat food "through their mouth"? No, seriously, I'm not just talking about eating.

Is Allah one like I am one? Does this not warrant an explanation.

zenje! we constantly grow and replaces wrong ideas with the right ones. Meanwhile we hold onto what we know until we get what is more convincing.

                            What is your criteria?

If you didn't have this instruction book, would you be eating through another orifice?

Yes, it would be wrong because if the statement is true, why didn't Allah mention it? Was Allah constrained by his publishers or something?

Are we saying that during the life time of the prophet, he answered all questions and responded to people in all aspects of his life by just quoting the explicit statements of the Qur'an? Whatever he explained that isn't in al-quraan isn't essential to us and even to say its beneficial is questionable.

The reason why we're seeking clarifications is because of the so-called clarifications and explanations which you're asking about. All those obfuscations has given us a gargantuan task in understanding al-quraan.

Is it not true that a statement as simple as "Allah is one" might need extra explanation?

It might, but I think you need to look at al-quraan more because the entire book hovers around that theme. So if you think al-quraan lacks explanation there, you clearly have done your reading.

While I do not rely on the collections known as al-Hadith, nonetheless, nothing will prevent me from accepting what is true regardless of where it is found and who has said it.

Sorry , you said 'explain' , not 'reinforce' . They are not the same thing. Do you mean 'explain' or 'reinforce' ?

It makes no sense to say that Allah commands us to accept that He is one - Allah could only have appealed to our sense of reasoning to acknowledge that He is one.

A 'command' is a statement ordering you to do something. In Arabic, it's called 'feel amr'. All rusul went to thier people and said

Serve Allah. There is no god but he.

                            This is a command.

I don't know where you get your information from, but I would really appreciate if you show me some evidence.

                                    1. What does it mean to be 'not serious enough' or 'too serious' ?

                                    2. Why does your standard of seriousness apply here? You have a playground in the off-topic section. Do you need the entire forum for your horseplay and mockery?

                                        Hi all,

My fear however is that this reaction is not so overstretched as to reject anything good that can be found elsewhere.

What can we possibly reject that's not found in al-quraan? I read voraciously but the only thing my extra-quranic reading does is to stimulate questions. Marxism for example stimulated some powerful questions such as distribution of wealth etc. However , Al-quraan is the one which answered that question.

Eating food through the mouth is not explicitely stated in the Qur'an and it is good. There is no problem for me to read a book that talks about the proper way to use my mouth for eating or that tells me about maintaining the mouth. I will consider such a book to be an explanation for the instruction to eat and to be clean.

I would agree with omeiza. Some in the forum do claim anything not mentioned in the Quran is nonsense and false and vain talk. I wouldnt agree on that. Quran is God's direct message/guidance to mankind. But all other forms of goodness, knowledge, wisdom outside Quran is from Allah too. If Quran doesnt mention meditation is good, drinking 8 glasses of water a day is good, it doesnt make all these acts sinful. We need to use logic, reasoning and sense to understand reality and truth. We cant blindly refute anything not mentioned in the Quran as false.

Yes, Wisdom and goodness from any source(Hadith or elsewhere) is from Allah. And Allah asks us to strive for wisdom and knowledge.

Is it not true that a statement as simple as "Allah is one" might need extra explanation?

The fact that ''Allah is one'' doesnt need extra explanation. Its very obvious and fits in all forms of logic and reasoning.

While I do not rely on the collections known as al-Hadith, nonetheless, nothing will prevent me from accepting what is true regardless of where it is found and who has said it.

Yeah. To refute something even if its good, merely becoz its in hadith is stupidity.
We need to use logic, reasoning and common sense and accept truth no matter where it comes from.

There is no compulsion in religion. But its very evident that God is one who has no form or shape and is above all. To submit to Allah would be to acknowledge that God is one and live a righteous life.
