    Peace,

Decent and provocative are different to each (almost) person.

    Joe

If some men find even modest clothes provocative, then they should learn to lower their gazes and also learn to practise some self control.

Just wondering if any other women here besides me wear hijab or other type of veils?

Jaxal used to do during his Sunni days - see his picture in the OFF TOPIC section -)

(sorry Jaxal I had to add this comment wink I hope you don't mind)

      Regards,

        Peace AngelaRose,

I personally choose not to wear the hijab, but fully respect the rights of those who choose to do so.

Where I'm from, people are gradually loosing their ability to freely make that choice - more and more people are wearing hijab because of social / peer pressure, without even understanding why they're wearing it in the first place.

But then again, i guess this kind of social pressure is really not too different from the pressure that hijab wearing women may feel in countries where Muslims are a minority. In both situations, there's still pressure to conform to social norms.

        Sky.

I think Joe is talking about another thing. For instance, for Huaroani women (an Amazon tribe) not covering their breasts is decent, or not going so far, for women in beaches in Spain in summer, the same is not provocative.

Well, I guess 'modesty' might also depend on the society one lives in, to an extent.
But 'not covering one's breast' cant be modest, I think. Quran tells us to cover up adequately and be modest.

              Peace!

But the Amozonians and many tribal societies in Africa and Polynesian Islands go bare breasted quite happily.

Modesty is in the Eye of the Beholder - a conditioned response?

                  Salam Girls And/or guys

I have never worn hijab and don't think i ever will. I am not going to wear a hijab because men can't control their impulses. When men can't control themselves they blame the women for this. This is when you can separate the men from the boys. The men will continue there worship of Allah regardless of who was wearing what, and the boys , well you know the rest girls.
Have you girls ever seen the men that take their women out covered from head to toe in hijab, while she is doing her best to not look like a walking tent and trying not to trip over all that material HE is busy oogling at other women.
I find in schools here now the majority of girls are wearing hijabs and out of that majority most of them don't want to wear it.
My mum frequently tells me to make my girls wear hijab, she says if they don't they'll become too confident and i'll lose my control over them. I'm willing to take my chances.
Men want to control us so they make/force us to wear hijab.
Parents want to control us so they make/force us to wear hijab.
So this piece of material (they think) will make us good, modest and controlled.
Because of this one item of clothing i was treated like dirt by the muslim community i lived in. They couldn't see me as being a muslim unless i wore a hijab. They started complaining to my husband and after he turned around and told them to stop interfering with his family life they started harassing us and it continued till we finally had to leave after 11 years of living there.
So girls if you choose to wear a hijab thats great, but if you don't please don't feel guilty and don't let anyone make you feel that way.

                    Salam Girls And/or guys

                    rotfl

I have never worn hijab and don't think i ever will.

                    Neither have I wink

I am not going to wear a hijab because men can't control their impulses.

I think men and women can be equal in that respect, as in controlling their "impulses". It depends on how sexually liberated culture you live in.

When men can't control themselves they blame the women for this.

That is just the misogyny of men perpetuated through the centuries by pious men fearful of female sexuality. In primitive societies it is the Women that has the Power. Women had been regarded very highly by our ancient ancestors for her power of fertility. And thus in our evolutionary past women held power in Matriachal communities in ancient societies. It was the invention of agriculture in the cities of Ur, Kish and Erech in Ancient Mesopotamia that led to the decline of Matrichal power in those societies, since Masculine qualities became more useful in the city states in our early civilisations...

Have you girls ever seen the men that take their women out covered from head to toe in hijab, while she is doing her best to not look like a walking tent and trying not to trip over all that material HE is busy oogling at other women.

I was having a dinner at this place. This women walked in wearing Arabian style hijab - The one that has everything coverved - only opening for eyes. She came with her husband and two kids. A friend pointed out to me when the meal was served how she ate the meal. I could not help but observe sneakily. It was bizzare! She ate by taking spoonful of food behind her black veil, just enough opening, to slide the spoon underneath the veil. I did not know whehter to laugh or pity her! This was nothing to do with MODESTY. It was imprisonment of an individual by the men! It is a way of keeping them in prison, it is a demonstration of mens power over women!

I find in schools here now the majority of girls are wearing hijabs and out of that majority most of them don't want to wear it.

Free to choose? and I am sure most will choose to be FREE.

So girls if you choose to wear a hijab thats great, but if you don't please don't feel guilty and don't let anyone make you feel that way.

But I say if you are truly an individual then you would not choose to imprison yourself in a arabian style hijab...

                    Regards,

Umm, I have neer worn hijab and never will. I was open to it in the past, but now, I know that I never will. I have yet to hear a logical reason for this imposition on women and it is obviously a symbol of male domination over women, no matter which way sunnis wanna spin it. There are some women who feel as if western women are subjugated by the need to always please men, and I agree. However, going in the opposite extreme does not prove anything, except that they are also subjugated, except in the opposite way!

Khi- Salam sister. Yep ur absolutely right. Both are extremes and both are corrupt. Btw hijaab is not original to sunnis or "muslims" as a whole for that amtter. It came from the Jews and hence entered hadith. Reminds me of another definition of hadith. "hadith besides the Quran is the garbage which has been put into the mouth of the Prophet Muhammad by the JEWS". The similarity btw the hadith and the Bible is striking. GOD Bless!

Khi- Salam. The phrase you bolded literally means "except what is visble thereof" and is interpreted differently. It can be understood to mean those things which are ordinary visible for example and the hair is ordinary. Also sometimes it may even be very uncomfortable to cover the hair partcular for those people who live in extreme climates, in the summers. So you cannot generalize anything this way. GOD Bless!

                                      Peace,

In extreme climates, people should cover their heads due to the effects of exposure. Why do you think people trekking through a desert wear head coverings? Even people in pakistan at the height of summer try to cover their heads while venturing outdoors.

I don't believe however, that one needs to be dressed up like a tent to be declared modest. There is a way to dress and it's adaptable, but limits should be observed depending on the environment. Even on beaches, I find it hard to believe that men don't look at women wearing bathing suits. That it's all a big happy family. It's not and thus I tend to swim in controlled environments, and it's not difficult to find appropriate/decent clothes for swimming even with only women, then I just need to worry about lesbians...but at least I'm dressed modestly...
