    Peace All,

Where in the world do women have full freedom of what to wear and how to wear it? Women are always under pressure from either tradition or fashion. I cannot blame those girls who wear hijab with tight skirts, etc. They have to deal with the pressure coming from both places, their families and their peers.

sorry np, I think you misunderstood what I was saying.
I was commenting on trend I've have seen among young muslim. I wasn't generalising or proclaimg "we are better than them".

you are right also, the superiority complex is on both sides, as God says in his book, every community rejoices in what it has been given and think they are better than the other.

I'm have been critical of this forum on many occassions.

I beleive Hijab can also be liberating and a sign of progression, but it depends on what your motive is .... and thats a seperate discussion.

      peace.

        As Salaam Alaikum,

NoProgressive So what did you mean when you said
Free-Minds.org, calls itself prgoressive. But yet it seems as if many of the members are just 16th century rulers wanting to control women.

I meant exactly what I said. There are many members here who choose to live like 16th century rules, wanting to control women. I sure didn't say all.

        salaam

          As Salaam Alaikum,

          peace,

As a side note, al-quran does not use "hijab" the way it is being used here, in fact, it is not even an item of clothing in al-quran. By using it as such, one is only perpetuating the myth.

I call it hijab, just becuase people will know what i am talking about. I can of course say khimar if I wanted to use Quranic literuate... and no, I am not down with that whole "well a khimar can be this and this" .

I do believe that women were covering their heads with a khimar back then (please note how I didn't say I believe they were commanded to cover their heads). I can point to the use of the word "jilbab", a garment that covers the body, to further my argument. But what the heck I don't know arabic anyway, just some words, so i won't act like a scholar. lol

Good point on righteousness. It upsets me how people don't get the concept of righteousness.

          salaam

In uk & uae, I see so many girls who'll wear the hijab, but then have the tightest jeans or skimpiest top they can find. What's the point. I'm seeing this trend more and more in the uk among younger generation.

luckly for them I'm usally in a rush otherwise I'd stop and ask them.

            peace.

OMG! That is sooo true! I know a couple of girls who wear capri pants, short tops, spaghetti straps, and a huge hijab on! It's like, why bother??? ?

They told them if you don't cover themselves they will become the devils wives and that he will piss on their heads if its not covered.

LMFAO! Like how do these people think up this stuff??? lol

i think hijab , (covering head with scarf) looks cool i mean luk at these girls in hijab i think they luk very cute in it ,
well i doubt they are being forced to wear hijab i mean wht da heck they are just too young to too rebel or too feel forced to wear or something,i think it doesnt matter because as their age passes by the hijab will be become a permenent garment for them n then they wont have any problem.
i do have a problem with totally black burkha , n i specially have a problem with niqab ( covering ur face also )

                      Salam,

Funny about these children in "hijab" -- I'm in a Yahoo group and a woman there recently posted, asking about places to buy scarves small enough for her 1-month-old girl... roll

Yes, you have to get them started early on this so they don't rebel later and show their hair to someone. ?

Its becoz they are children that they look ''cute'', and not necessarily becoz they are covered with head cover.
Have u seen a child without hijab and felt she would only look cute with one?

Children are children. They are innocent. Girls and boys alike. I think hijab for female children is taking it a bit too far.
How would u train the boys for the beard tradition? Artifical beards stuck to their chin, until they have their own?wink

Funny about these children in "hijab" -- I'm in a Yahoo group and a woman there recently posted, asking about places to buy scarves small enough for her 1-month-old girl... roll

Propably they would also prefer teaching/training their female children how inferior they are to men, and how submissive they should remain to men. So that these girls dont ever dare to be independent or feel worthy or feel equal.
Its sad there is so much gender bias which starts as early as the birth of a child. (

                        Peace!

True. They get brainwashed at an early age.

                              peacefulmuslim,

Has it not occured to you that maybe those little kids are only wearing hijabs on their heads becuase it may be a special occasion??????

For instance, personally, becuas I know that a hijab is about sex, modesty, etc, and one has to be aware of their body when wearing i will forbid my daughters from wearing it until they come of a certain age... BUT when they go to the mosque, Eid, or whatever other Muslim event I would allow them to wear it. Special occasions, certian circumstances. I think that it's cute.

Among women it's a symbol of modesty.

Among children it's just a symbol of identity.

Seriously, I believe that you all are taking something very simple to a an extreme level. You all are making it pervertic.

If you seriously think that the young girl in the picture about the french ban of hijab, represents a young girl forced to cover her head, becuase her parents believe that she may be "inmodest" without it, somehting is seriously wrong with you. It only shows whatever hate that you may have for hijab. You can't even think reasonably.

Whether you like it or not the hijab is very much apart of MILLIONS of muslims identity.

For women it's about modesty (and identity). And for kids, such as little babies, it's looked at as a view of INDENTITY more than anything... definitly not modesty.

I'm not saying that hijab is something that should be worn for special occausions, or that it's meant for that. No.

What I am saying is it's my belief that the vast majoiryt of the time you will nly find little girls wearing hijabs on special occasions. Becuase (1) they may want to look like their mother, and (2) it's a religious belief, therefore a religious symbol and they are at a religion-related event

I seriously doubt that "she needs to be modest at this occasion" is the number reason, or even the 2nd, 3rd, or evne 4th, that a 5 year old is wearing a hijab at the masjid, according to her parents. Though I see that you all really want to believe this. Don't be fooled, not every muslim in the mainstream thought, is an extremist!

It's an issue of IDENTITY, not an issue of modesty!!

I have a question. If I was pregnant and went out and bought my kid a Quran, would that be bad? If I wanted that Quran to be its first gift?? Sat it right on a table, beside its crib, as if they could actually read it or something, would that be gross?? Would be bad to have like "God is Great" on its wall?

                                  salaam

                                    Okay, point taken.

If you seriously think that the young girl in the picture about the french ban of hijab, represents a young girl forced to cover her head

I do not think any of these young females are forced to wear them, though I doubt they choose their own attire. I certainly did not when I was young. Still different strokes for different folks.

It only shows whatever hate that you may have for hijab.

No it does not. I've no hate for veils, well maybe for ugly ones or those mis-matched in one's attire. It certainly looks good on some women.

Whether you like it or not the hijab is very much apart of MILLIONS of muslims identity.

Yes I understand this. Still what knowledge have you of the identifying marks of a muslim that God has pointed out?

For women it's about modesty (and identity).

Why identity? It's certainly not just a muslim thing in that respect.

And for kids, such as little babies, it's looked at as a view of INDENTITY more than anything... definitly not modesty.

Is the parent then not forcing a belief on their child. Can you truly say that a child is muslim or has chosen to be muslim because their parent/s have put this so-called identity mark on them?

                                    definitly not modesty.

You said it was for modesty and identity.

Becuase (1) they may want to look like their mother,

Nothing wrong in that, still it has no significance to the deen.

                                    it's a religious belief

Again, of the child or the parent. Therein comes the question, is this a forced conversion?

Don't be fooled, not every muslim in the mainstream thought, is an extremist!

I do not know every muslim so I would not hold each and every one of them to that title.

It's an issue of IDENTITY, not an issue of modesty!!

Please point out the defining factors of a muslim based on God's judgement.

Also note that hijab from Ha-Jim-Ba (that which conceals) occurs in the reading 7x and none have to do with issues of modesty or headgear. So I'm not sure how you make it an identifying factor in the 1st place.

If I was pregnant and went out and bought my kid a Quran, would that be bad?

Does your child know how to read at the tender age of his/her 6 month fetal period? To me it's not really a practical decision, maybe some diapers and other things would be more important. If you've got a quran and your child likes reading ur's and wants one of his/her own I say go for it.

                                      As SAlaam Alaikum The Nabi,

                                      Peace
I do not think any of these young females are forced to wear them, though I doubt they choose their own attire. I certainly did not when I was young. Still different strokes for different folks.

Then why are you complaigning? Based on your admission, this seems to be just the old facts and ways of life. Parents choose what their kids wear.
Americans do it, Europeans do it, Austrailian do it, Arabs do it, Asians do it, AFricans do it. Very few societies do not choose what tehir children wear.

Are you mad at everyone who chooses what their kids wear???? Are you mad at parents who dress their kids up?? Or are you just mad at Muslims for doing it?

Either you want to have a constructive argument or you just want to complain.

Yes I understand this. Still what knowledge have you of the identifying marks of a muslim that God has pointed out?

What are you talking about????? Just becuase I choose not ot be arrogant and irrational when it comes to hijab, it surely does not mean that I believe that one has to wear it or that God commanded it. I'm talking about their beliefs.

Why identity? It's certainly not just a muslim thing in that respect.

Well I surely doubt most Muslims think of Nuns and Jewish women when they think of a headcovering.

Is the parent then not forcing a belief on their child. Can you truly say that a child is muslim or has chosen to be muslim because their parent/s have put this so-called identity mark on them?

LOL. LOL. So you believe that babies are non-believers??

Are you going to allow your 5 yr olds to go around and curse? It's only your belief and others, that may believe that its wrong. Not thiers.

Oh and tha fan favorite, are you going to allow them to eat pork, like peppreroni pizza at their friends b-day parties? It may be only your belief that it's wrong.

What about respecting others? What are you going to teach them about that???

Screw the idea that I am "forcing" my child to be Muslim just becuase from day one I will identify them as Muslim and bring them up as Muslim.

I'd rathar bring them up teaching them certian beliefs, then suddenly when they are 13 expect them to start making salat, and fasting for Ramadan. You can't have intellectual conversations about religion with kids until about that age..

You said it was for modesty and identity.

                                      Woemn--- modesty (and idenity)
                                      Kids--- Identity.

Nothing wrong in that, still it has no significance to the deen.

Last time I checked God said covered your zinat excpet what is apparent. Who hte heck are you to define that for any one else?

Again, of the child or the parent. Therein comes the question, is this a forced conversion?

Your question is wrong in the first place because babies aren't non-believers! They don't reject God!

Also note that hijab from Ha-Jim-Ba (that which conceals) occurs in the reading 7x and none have to do with issues of modesty or headgear. So I'm not sure how you make it an identifying factor in the 1st place.

I make it an idenitifying factor for simpliticy, becuase many Muslims use it as that. Even more I use "hijab" as simplicity because that's how many Muslims in the USA say it. You won't win on that.

"Khimar' is the word used that many Muslim find their juitificuation for a headcovering, whcih is another subject in itself.

                                      salaam

                                        Hi Noprogressive,

Has it not occured to you that maybe those little kids are only wearing hijabs on their heads becuase it may be a special occasion??????

I honestly doubt if thats the case in many who make their children wear hijab.
I have known people who do that. The child was just learning to walk, and she was covered up like that if she even stepped out of the house into the open garden. If the child accidentally, walked out of the house, her mom would run behind her, bring her in and cover her up and then let her go to play in the garden.
So, there are people who cover up their children like that, all the time.

I dont see why hijab is a symbol of identity in children? whats the need for identity? is it important that children be identified according to their religion of birth?

The reason, I think , why people make their children wear hijab, is becoz they think its their religious duty. It comes with the set of do's and dont's (in other words, halal and haram) that their leaders tell them.

                                        Peace!

                                          Peace

                                          Then why are you complaigning?

I'm not complaining. Please do not jump to conclusions that have no basis. When I'm asking you a question it does not mean I'm complaining to you. So let's just clear that up right now so you won't have such a thought in mind as we discuss this.

Are you mad at everyone who chooses what their kids wear????

No not at all. Let's clear another thing up before you make judgement again that is wrong. I am not mad that parents choose what their children wear. My primary concern here is why does the veil have to be an identifying mark to, let's say, muslimhood on a child who probably is not muslim? In my opinion the decision is the child's to make, not mine own. Clearly there is to be no compulsion in the deen. Does it now not apply to one's child? It's like the parent/s taking it upon themselves to circumcise the male or female child needlessly. I believe it's a decision the child should make at least when s/he is old enough to assume responsiblilty for such decisions.

Or are you just mad at Muslims for doing it?

No. I'm not mad at all. I'm just trying to point out how the parent/s assume their child is muslim and so choose to dress them up in the insignia which would draw attention to that stance. I can understand adhering to social mores, such as wearing dress up clothes in a catholic/private school, or wearing a cap and gown for graduation, or having oneself come neat to work, etc. Where does God, however, make the veil a necessity for going to a mosque or for going to Eid or Ramadhan celebrations?

Either you want to have a constructive argument or you just want to complain.

It's the former. You are getting rowdy for no necessary reason. Please, keep calm and speak in peace.

                                          What are you talking about?????

I'm asking you to point out to me the identifying marks of the muslimeen. Please, the question is simple enough.

Well I surely doubt most Muslims think of Nuns and Jewish women when they think of a headcovering.

They do not need to. It does not change the fact that it is not exclusive to what many muslim women do.

So you believe that babies are non-believers??

I'm not sure why you would assume that. I believe babies are born with a clean slate and are conditioned in their beliefs. They are neither believers or non-believers. A true believer is one not only in profession but in one's life. I doubt children choose to be mumin or muslimeen until they understand the principle and make the decision on their own.

What about respecting others? What are you going to teach them about that???

Well I do believe in the practice of setting an example for one's child, but one still cannot force them to be muslim, no matter what you put on them or say they are. It is disturbing when I see teenagers and adults brought up in a muslim family and they know they are not muslimeen because it is not in their nature to act as such. They want to do other things contrary to being a muslim and they do so to an extent. I will advice my child according to my scrupples and beliefs but I will no tell my child that s/he should take my stance on this or that thing. I will encourage self-discovery and exploration. There's a difference in offering advice and teaching from forcing something on someone. The only thing I will enforce are my rules so long as the child is under my guardianship.

                                          Kids--- Identity.

Is it really the child's identity?

Last time I checked God said covered your zinat excpet what is apparent. Who hte heck are you to define that for any one else?

I am the plain warner .

Your question is wrong in the first place because babies aren't non-believers! They don't reject God!

No, my question is not wrong. I did not say babies were believers or non-believers.

I make it an idenitifying factor for simpliticy, becuase many Muslims use it as that.

Okay I understand but in my opinion might does not make right. The majority is not necessarily in the right.

                                          You won't win on that.

Of course not! I only want to know where God makes it obligatory and for the reasons you say.

"Khimar' is the word used that many Muslim find their juitificuation for a headcovering, whcih is another subject in itself.

Khimar means cover, it can also, like hijab, mean veil. Hijab is not used in the reading as a veil nor is khimar. In ayat 24/31 is is said draw your khumur/coverings over you juyoob. Juyoob is not head. Also keep in mind that the ayat makes it clear that khimar is something that has been worn before and should be used for this particular reason.

                                          Joe
