The hidden ones (al jinn) refer to the inner world of the human. The human is comprised of the hidden(jinn) and the seen(physical body).
The hidden ones(jinn) can best be described as THOUGHTS, the hidden component to BEING.
From the following verse , we can see that the hidden ones(thoughts) basically follow two ways, but in degrees.
(7211) 'And that we from us (are) the righteous, and from us (are) other than that, we are stages/layers fragments/pieces
We are told that the hidden ones(thoughts) are created from smokeless fire, a flame. Please keep this in mind as I will use this symbolism to help explain my position.
We will think of a small flame as a thought(a hidden one). Of the hidden ones there are some who righteous, they are called the controlled(al malaika). Then there are others who have rejected and are therefore out of control and they are called the obsessive(shayteen). The rejected obsessions.
We can think of similitudes in life, like a calm controlled flame used for cooking(heaven), or if this flame is stoked, it can get out of control and cause a destructive fire (hell).
We must realize it is our THOUGHTS that direct our lives. Our CHOICES in life are made by our THOUGHTS. And this world is all about the CHOICES you make.
Now we get down to the essence of the matter. The only time you really CHOOSE is when there is no energy(ruh/wind) behind your decision. If there is energy/wind blowing on your flame(thought) , then you were being PUSHED(blown) into a certain direction, so you did not CHOOSE. CHOOSING does not involve any FORCE, it is FREE.
For example, you are at a crosroads, do you go left or do you go right? But then someone comes and pushes you to the left. You did not CHOOSE to go left, you were PUSHED(blown) to the left. This is the same thing that happens with EMOTIONS (energy in motion).
Shayteen are your EMOTIONS. They are the hidden ones with ENERGY behind them, rather than PEACE(the opposite of energy). If we go back to the flame, if we stoke it with much air, the fire grows until it is hard to control. Of course a little rain(revelation) can help D
When we are at Peace, the God sends the controlled thoughts upon us. Peace be upon you is what we greet. And this is why. When someone is emotional, they are out of control. We can verify this easily.
The God commanded(divine inspiration) the "flames" to prostrate to Adam, but this command caused one flame to get stoked out of control. He was of the hidden ones and broke the command of his Lord. So we associate the FIRE with hell.
Regarding the divine inspiration, it is called "ruh" and is related to wind and scent. When we breath in "inspire", the wind causes fire within us. Wind is what MOVES THINGS AROUND, it is the ENERGY of life.
Just as a note regarding SCENT and the emotions, scent is one of the major forces in MOVING us towards or AWAY from things. Have yo9u ever fasted and done a good job until you SMELLED some fried chicken or whatever food you like most? It is THEN when the EMOTIONS start telling you to break fast! D Or th eopposite, you are breathing fresh air and someone "breaks wind" (farts), then you desire to MOVE AWAY.
I am just trying to tie this all in together. I hope it is working.
Solomon, the man of PEACE, he used SHAYTEEN to do the work, not malaika, why? Because it is the SHAYTEEN that are ENERGIZED, the malaika are at peace. ENERGY does the work. But the key is that the EMOTIONS MUST BE SLAVES, not leaders. The power of belief(thought+energy) is very powerful tool.
SO again, malaika are the thoughts at peace, the shayteen are the thoughts with energy behind them (Beliefs--->Emotions/varying degrees)
(214) And if they met/found those who trusted, they said "We Trust". But if they were alone with to their beliefs/emotions they said "That we are with you, but we are mocking ."
The difference between the malaika and the shayteen is the ENERGY/WIND (ruh). To be at peace and calm, you have to INSPIRE and EXPIRE slowly. If you look at someone who is emotional, lets take a crying child for example, you can see there breath is fast and choppy, not long and smooth and slow.
The number of the beast, they say, is 666. 6+6+6=18 breaths per minute, which is the average breath rate (72 pulses per minute). This is what gives life (wind) to the BEAST(emotion). When you slow your rate of breathing down, you suffocate the BEAST, and you can recieve the message of the God from the malaika.
Yes, slow the breathing to be at PEACE (non emotional) and get the commands of your Lord!
Solomon (who shares the root S-L-M) had the WIND subjected to him;
(3836) So We manipulated/subjugated for him the wind/breeze it flows/passes with his order/command, soft/gentle where/when it struck/marked
This is the verse directly after Solomon asked for a kingdom.
Your breath must be slow and RYTHMATIC.
(3412) And for Solomon the wind was given, traveling one full moon coming and one full moon going (RYTHM), and We caused a spring of tar to flow for him. And from among the hidden ones(thoughts) are those that worked for him by his Lord's leave; and any one of them who turns from Our commands, We shall cause him to taste the retribution of the Fire.

This reading is a confirmation of what came before it.
In the STory of Ausar (Osirus-God within), SET(satan) came with 72 conspirators to a banquet where he had a funerary chest that was so beautiful that everyone wanted it. When everyone was in a joyous state from intoxications, SET stated that he would give the chest to anyone who could fit it (knowing he made it to fit Ausar), When Ausar got in, Set closed the chest, thereby SUFFOCATING(breath) Ausar...
I hope you see the connection of 72, and breathing, etc.

Well, I dont have the entire puzzle all figured out, but here's what I think so far;

First thing we need to realize is that the "I" , whom we are, is NOT our thoughts, nor our bodies. The fact that we can entertain or ignore thoughts gives evidence that we are not our thoughts. If you sit back and watch your thoughts come and go, you will realize that thoughts are thrown into your sphere of awareness not of your own decision. The problem in life is that most people IDENTIFY with thier collection of thoughts and with thier bodies.
Anyway, it is the physical body that recieves the decree of death, and perhaps this explains that the thoughts continue because they are not part of the physical body. Certainly the verses regarding the afterlife involve the thought process.
I think something else which is important is this shows that thoughts mainly refelect the Outer World.
These are just some of my thoughts on that right now.

Yes. I understand Adam as the human intellect. Our intellect can be correct or can be incorrect (adams two sons). Our intellect must submit to the Gods word in order to be correct all the time, otherwise it is a 50-50 type of deal. The God is telling us not to let our intellect follow emotions/beliefs(shayteen), THAT is what takes you from paradise(state of PEACE/non -emotion), which is the protective layer. Shayteen(emotions/beleifs) are thoughts with energy behind them, and they belong to the hidden ones(jinn), so we cannot see them, but they see us.
If you do not mind me sharing something with you that I learned in my Kemetic Philosophy class today that falls in line with this....In Ancient Kemet(egypt), the faculty of intellect was called "sebek". One of its SYMBOLS was the alligator. The alligator is a creature that is born on land, then goes into the water. Most of the thoughts we have in life are EARTH BORN, for example, a child grows up seeing people respond to adversity with anger and violence, so this THOUGHT REFLEX becomes ingrained in your subconscious over time. This is the alligator moving into the water(subconscious). So you go through life with this UNDERLYING thought process (and many others you have aquired). One day, when you east expect it, you are faced with an adversity, and this THOUGHT REFLEX comes up and bites you out of no where. The correct response to the situation would have been PEACE, but your subconcious sends up this THOUGHT and an IMAGE and an ENERGY that causes you to act in the wrong way. Later on, after you calm down, you can see you responded incorrectly, but your "hidden ones" decieved you.
What I explained above requires a detailed understanding of how the human behavior works. I hope this short story was still clear enough.

Seeing with the heart does not mean literal vision, it deals with making ABSTRACT connections. It is the INABILITY of most people to make abstract connections that causes all this seperation based on outward appearances. Literal seeing is done with the eyes, and we cannot see our thoughts.

Yes, the emotions within manifest outwardly to wicked actions, both promotes evil.

I had to add one aspect, There are two levels of thought, one is THOUGHT DRIFT, where thoughts just come and go and man tends to entertain these unaware. This is the human who is SLEEP (dead).
Then there is the ability to take control of thoughts, that is REASONING.

jinn=hidden forces
malaika= controlled forces(at peace)
shayteen= progeny of iblis- uncontrolled forces (emotions)

The command was given to the controlled forces to prostrate(hear and obey) to the intellect of man. They all did except "iblis" (desperation?). "iblis" is one of the hidden forces. His progeny are the emotions(shayteen). Will you run by emotions rather than by being at peace? Uncontrolled rather than controlled?

The God created the hidden and visable forces to serve Him. Our being is created from the visable and hidden. Your thoughts(hidden) and actions(visable) should be in line with the God's will.

I want to draw your attention to the following, ONENESS is he key. We must be WHOLEISTIC. It is by differentiating that we cause so many problems. Adam was given the garden(whole) but dont go near THAT TREE(differentiation of the whole). In the same manner, ALL of the malaika prostrated(WHOLENESS), except Iblis(differentiation).

Thanks for sharing your thoughts bro. I'm following your line of thinking so far, except where Iblis = Desperation. In my reading, pride/ego/rebellious-desire (ala Dr. Shabbir Ahmed) still seems to make the most sense and fit in every instance.

Because when we take a teaching and personify it into a story that brings up a Visual Image, it is easier to remember. And rememebring is CRUCIAL at the crossroads of life when we need to REMEMBER. This is why all teachings are given to us as stories. This is why the ancients of Kamit(Egypt), used Hieroglyphics (pictures). Pictures and metaphors are recieved by the Right brain, which is the unifying side. The Left side is the segrative side. When you learn things in a step by step fashion, it goes to the left brain. We need to get the right brain working! Thatis why there is so much "right hand" "right-eousness" being talked about.
Anyway, ths is why the God personifies not just shayteen, but many things.

To prostrate is to "hear and obey". Our hidden thoughts must "hear and obey" Adam. Adam is human intellect, not mankind itself.
IN our minds, there are thoughts and visions that come and go all the time, this is thought drift. We have to learn how to eliminate this thought drift and start to ORDER these thoughts, which is called reasoning.
When we leave our hidden thoughts to just drift, we accept some of them as our own and this can lead us off the path.

The God is not NAMING them 'Jinn', the God is describing them as "hidden".
