Drugs
-
Peace all,
I live in Amsterdam and as you may know Amsterdam/The Netherlands is well known for it's official policy of tolerating small-scale sales and personal possession of cannabis.
My question is very simple what does the Quran tell us about drugs? Is it prohibited? My apologies for bringing up a subject that might already have been discussed. I have been searching this forum to find an answer to my question, but unfortunately I couldn't find an answer. Hope that you guys can help.
Thanks.

And now to ur question, There have been discussions on this and alcohol in many threads. I believe these are the verses from Quran on the topic.

My opinions are as follows
- From Quran, we understand that we are expected to be in our senses at all times and that we are responsible for each of our actions. How does being stoned, help u be in ur senses and in ur best capacity?
- What good does recreational drug abuse do? ''The feeling of elation'' is a lie. Do u want to live a lie especially when that comes with an expensive price of '' irreversible harm to ur body, mind and soul''. Allah tells us to use our common sense, sense of judgement to decide our deeds. How would u justify recreational drug abuse?
- I wish to know from Quran at what speed I can drive my car. Is it prohibited to drive fast? wink My point here is we(I for sure) dont even know if people of that time were aware of and used recreational drugs such as cannabis etc. So, why would Allah address a topic that wasn't in practise at that time to people of 630 AD?
My answer is Ask urself the question with all honesty and truth. U will get ur answer.
Peace!

Peace be upon you Heart,
Amsterdam!!! The word almost makes me backslide! twisted
Anyway, I have always wanted to meet someone from amsterdam to ask them how life is in a culture where smoking ganja is legal. Can you explain to us how life is in that type of culture?
In regards to yor question, I think the God cautions us against excess, not the use itself, the excess being for recreational use, as opposed to medicinal use.

Please define the medical use if you can. lol

Peace be upon you Steph,
Whats so funny lol
You over there working on your glaucoma? lol
Seriously though, marijuana is prescribed for glaucoma and cancer, etc.
I don't have a detailed analysis for you, but I am sure there are many sites on it.

marajuana for medical use includes glaucoma, stomach and appetite issues ascosiated with cancer therapies and AIDS, modd enhancement to combat depression ascociate with fatal and chronic illness, as well as (for some people) to help manage pain. There are also studies that point to ingested ganja being helpful with bronchial problems like asthma as it has a tendancy to make the sacks in the lungs expand more and take in more oxygen. I have heard of a few studies in regard to muscular distrophy, multiple sclorosis and cystic fybrosis as well as fibromialgia.
just a short list of common medical uses.

Peace PM,
Thanks for your respons. Opinions differ. That's the first thing I noticed while reading the responses on the subject alcohol and cannabis.

Reading the above makes it clear to me that you're anti-drugs or anti anything intoxicating. I fully understand what you mean, but it's also obvious that it's not prohibited, although God warns us of the consequences of these intoxicants (drugs or liquor).
My answer is Ask urself the question with all honesty and truth. U will get ur answer.
Peace!
I did get an answer. It's not prohibited, that's all I wanted to know. A gutfeeling already told me that it wasn't prohibited, but I needed a confirmation of what I already (secretly) knew. That means that I can roll a blunt once in a while to relax. oops
Thanks again for your respons.

Peace Idolfree1,
Life in a culture where cannabis is tolerated (it's not legalized yet) is quite normal. Or well... what is considered normal? Here in Amsterdam it's quite normal to once in a while smoke a blunt. (Ofcourse not all 'Dutchies' smoke weed, but I think that most Dutch people must have tried it once!) Police don't say or do anything if you light up a blunt. In the coffeeshops you'll find a variety of people; youngsters, middle age women/men, tourists etc. I don't have to explain, I think you get the picture.

The Benefits Of Marijuana
By Joshua Levine
Health Correspondent - Every 2nd SaturdayAre you sick of hearing your girlfriend nagging you about letting go of your pot pasttime? Have you been hearing a lot of negative things about the use of marijuana lately? Would you like to know what the real deal is behind the use of this infamous drug? Then read on because you're in for a surprise.
One of the saddest things in North America is the lack of clinical trials on marijuana use. Many other countries in the world have already performed such tests in order to destroy myths about this drug, which has been in use for thousands of years... mainly for medicinal purposes. The data from previous studies, published in numerous books and scholarly journals, covered such matters as marijuana's effects on the brain, lungs, immune and reproductive systems; its impact on personality, developmental and motivational states; and its addictive potential.
Although these studies did not answer all remaining questions about marijuana toxicity, they generally supported the idea that marijuana was a relatively safe drug -- not totally free from potential harm, but unlikely to create serious harm for most individual users or society.
The following list will hopefully demystify several myths about marijuana use and help answer a lot of serious questions
health risk myths & realities
Marijuana Overdose
There is no existing evidence of anyone dying of a marijuana overdose. Tests performed on mice have shown that the ratio of cannabinoids (the chemicals in marijuana that make you high) necessary for overdose to the amount necessary for intoxication is 40,0001.
For comparison's sake, that ratio for alcohol is generally between 41 and 101. Alcohol overdoses claim approximately 5,000 casualties yearly, but marijuana overdoses kill no one as far as any official reports.Brain Damage
Marijuana is psychoactive because it stimulates certain brain receptors, but it does not produce toxins that kill them (like alcohol), and it does not wear them out as other drugs may. There is no evidence that marijuana use causes brain damage. Studies performed on actual human populations will confirm these results, even for chronic marijuana users (up to 18 joints per day) after many years of use.In fact, following the publication of two 1977 JAMA studies, the American Medical Association (AMA) officially announced its support for the decriminalization of marijuana.
In reality, marijuana has the effect of slightly increasing alpha-wave activity in your brain. Alpha waves are generally associated with meditative and relaxed states, which are, in turn, often associated with human creativity.
Memory
Marijuana does impair short-term memory, but only during intoxication. Although the authoritative studies on marijuana use seem to agree that there is no residual impairment following intoxication, persistent impairment of short-term memory has been noted in chronic marijuana smokers, up to 6 and 12 weeks following abstinence.Heart Problems
It is accepted in medical circles today that marijuana use causes no evident long-term cardiovascular problems for normal persons. Marijuana smoking, however, does cause changes in the heart and body's circulation characteristic of stress, which may complicate preexisting cardiovascular problems like hypertension, cerebrovascular disease, and coronary atherosclerosis. Marijuana's effects on blood pressure are complex and inconsistent as of yet.
Hormones
Chronic marijuana use has not been found to alter testosterone or other sex hormone levels. In contrast, heavy alcohol use is known to lower these same testosterone levels.Reproductive Damage
No trustworthy study has ever shown that marijuana use damages the reproductive system, or causes chromosome breakage. Studies of actual human populations have failed to demonstrate that marijuana adversely affects the reproductive system. Claims that marijuana use may impair hormone production, menstrual cycles, or fertility in females are both unproven and unfounded. The Immune System
Studies in which lab rats were injected with extremely large quantities of THC (the active compound in marijuana) have found that marijuana (in such unrealistically huge quantities) does have an "immunosuppressive effect" in those lab rats, in that it temporarily shuts off certain cells in the liver called lymphocytes and macrophages. These macrophages are useful in fighting off bacterial, not viral, infections. But this is only for the duration of intoxication. There also exists some evidence that marijuana metabolites remain in the lungs for up to seven months after smoking has ceased, possibly affecting the immune system of the lungs (but not by turning the cells off).
This said, doctors and researchers are still not sure that the immune system is actually negatively affected in realistic situations since there are no numbers to support the idea. In fact, three studies showed that THC might have actually stimulated the immune system in the people studied.
Cancer
Smoking marijuana has the potential to cause both bronchitis and cancer of the lungs, throat, and neck, but this is generally no different than inhaling any other burnt carbon-containing matter since they all increase the number of lesions (and therefore possible infections) in your airways. The Gateway Effect
Marijuana use has not been found to act as a gateway drug to the use of harder drugs. Studies show that when the Dutch partially legalized marijuana in the 70's, heroin and cocaine use substantially declined, despite a slight increase in marijuana use.If the stepping stone theory were true, use should have gone up rather than down. In reality, it appears that marijuana use tends to substitute for the use of relatively more dangerous hard drugs like cocaine and heroin, rather than lead to their use.
Thus, oftentimes strict marijuana laws themselves are the most significant factor involved in moving on to harder drugs like cocaine. Such is the case in Nevada and Arizona, the states toughest on marijuana use.
the potential benefits
Because smoked marijuana contains a variety of combustion compounds, it can damage the lungs and possibly the immune system. Several health committees recommended the development of an inhalation device that delivers pure THC -- the active ingredient in marijuana -- to the lungs. Such a device has not yet been created.
There is some evidence -- but no scientifically valid studies -- that marijuana is useful in treating some forms of epilepsy and spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis.
Some studies show that smoked marijuana is effective for some patients in relieving nausea caused by cancer and chemotherapy. 'Hyperemesis Gravidarum', Stephanie -
There is evidence that marijuana may improve the appetite and help patients gain weight. This could be lifesaving for AIDS patients who develop wasting , a severe weight-loss condition.Smoking marijuana is effective in lowering pressure inside the eyeballs of some patients with glaucoma. A word of caution, however the drug also drops blood pressure, and this could compromise blood flow to the optic nerve and damage vision.

anything is harmfull if used wrong. I would argue that there are "drugs" that in fact does not "cloud" the mind, but rather alter its perception for a while.
Drugs are being demonised for no good reason at all, especially with money from the alcohol lobby. Give that some thought will you. Its not that the system dont want us to take drugs, they just want people to take their drugs, like; benziodazepin, zooloft, risperdal, funtex, instead of the natural kava kava, that to date has been proved only beneficial. It is a natural anti depressant, but in large amount it can become hallucingenic. This is the argument for illegalising it. I tell you what, take a large dose of benziodazepin and you become dead!!! why is that still legal then?I wanted to go to Basel some weeks ago but couldnt make it. My freind however did. It was a conference dedicated to Albert Hofman, the father of synthesized Lysergicaciddiathylamide025. www.lsd.info
Some of the worlds leading experts on the human mind, and behaviour argued for the legal use of LSD025, mescaline (from cactus) and DMT (various sources) in psycho therapy. Why?
Because they have a succes rate of 70% with permanently curing alcoholism and drug abuse with guided LSD025 sessions. They have nothing but succes with using mescaline and dmt on utterly insane people and often is capable of making them go through the stuff in their mind that they normally cant. Rape victims and people traumatised are given life back from trauma using MDMA with the streetname extacy. There is no doubt in my mind when God is saying that there is a sign in the palmtrees and the grapes from wich we take intoxication, for a people who understand/reason were talking about hallucinegoneic plants. first of all, certain palms are hallucinogenic, and i am convinced that it is a medicine refference. Like THC (grass) can be used to give back appetite to sick people, and help on pains, hallucinegones are soul medincine. But to take them alone, without a proper "guide" for the session can be extremely dangerous and i would never recommend either, unless you are sure about what youre doing and its potential outcome.
The basel experience was mindblowing to say the least, i have read the material my freind brought from there, and even tho there are a few beatnecks inbetween, most of these guys are serious researchers, and the message is clear. We want access to the soul medicine that mankind has used ever since it found it.
Christian reicht from Germany, properbly the most knowledgeable man in the world on hallucinogenic plants, or visionary plants as he calles them, found a tribe in latin america where all the males does ayahuaska. ayahuaska induce strong visions, with glowing patterns moving before your eyes, what made reicht wonder was the fact that even tho only the males took the ayahuaska, the females of the tribe drawed the images of the patterns. They would sit around the tribe shaman and go into trance while drawing his "songs".
The visions that ayahuaska induce are unique to ayahuaska. Not other hallucingen induce such patterns, so how can the females draw it? BEcause they made an eyedrop from a grassroot with a certain fungus on it, and put in their eyes. This symbiosis of plants produce natural LSD25. It still does not explain how that would make them see the patterns, unless that the patterns are something actually there, and you just have to change the brain chemistrtry, the electro magnetic frequency in the brain to see it. what they do, i have no idea, but the indians insist that they are like "laylines" of the air, and that is why everybody sees them.
There are many good uses for drugs, but as recreational happenings i find that it has a tendancy to take over peoples life and behaviour. even the "i only smoke once a week" users, change from this abuse. The qeustion therefor is, is a change a good thing if its not needed? For some people definately it is, for most, its a stupid idea. There for my own bottomline is the same as idolfree's. Ofcourse its allowed, but you are allowed not to misuse it aswell. God cares about you, that is why were being told about the potential harm, aswell as the fact that benefits ARE to be made from the use of drugs.
finally what is drugs? what is their definition?
-
Peace magi and all. Excellent post. I think we should just be very careful with medicine and drugs. Some people can have a smoke of weed and get irrational and intoxicated(same with alcohol, lsd etc..) while some get benefits from these substances. Alcohol can lead to car-crashes,violence etc..but also has medicinal and relaxant properties in some situations. So as in all things weigh up the benefits/risks and use your rationality to make an informed and responsible decision.
Peace all. -
hi enquirer,
in general, i'm against any intoxicant use too, especially when it risks other people's lives.
my husband smoked marijuana every once in a while (because he can't get it easily as it's illegal here in the US), it used to freak me out because i was so afraid that it would make him a drug addict or out of his mind and did something irrational. but, the more i learned about soft drug like marijuana, the more i understand that it's not as dangerous as people think. as a matter of fact, it's safer to your body than cigarettes are.
when he smoked marijuana, nothing really happened, he didn't turn violent or anything, he could still talk to me like normal.
he even used marijuana when he tried to quit smoking cigarettes, to get rid of the craving while the nicotine was still in his system. ever since, he doesn't smoke cigarettes anymore. -

I know its hard to generalise, but a general idea? Sorry for soo many questions. Thanks.

Peace.Salam Enquirer,
Wow, that are a lot of questions and I don't know if I can answer them all. I'll try to answer some of it.
People here in Holland are most of the time very friendly and tolerant. It's very multicultural, especially in the big cities. After 9/11, the murder of the Dutch film maker Theo van Gogh and death threats by radical muslims directed to Dutch politicians the Dutch people seem very fearfull of muslims. But what's new? Almost everybody who has little knowledge of Islam seems to fear this religion.
I don't know much about politics. Maybe you can get some information here http//www.peaktalk.com/archives/000249.php and http//www.llrx.com/features/dutch2.htm#Legal%20System.
The morals and norms of the Dutch society are (I'm answering this question with the help of a friend wink ) solidarity, equality, protection of discrimination, freedom of speech, religion and education. Like most countries... so I hope I got that right.

I hope that I collected the needed information for you. My apologies for not answering all your questions.

I highly doubt the use of marijuana is forbidden. Marijuana does not at all cause remembrance of god to drift off. In fact it is quite the opposite. Marijuanais less dangerous than coffee or aspirin. It is more beneficial than harmful. I find it very hard to believe that cannabis is haram or even mukrooh (undesirable).
After all, cannabis use is a big part of Arabic culture (middle ages and ancient times).
