Modern medicine and the question of sex

Here are a couple controversial questions which I have tried to turn around in my head and have not quite found a satisfactory answer. There is the prescription about not creating a "physical bond" or consumation depending on the translation. Does this refer to a temporary physical bond (i.e. intercourse), or is it a a permanent physical bond - i.e. sperm+egg which would create a baby... My arabic isn't even close to good enough to figure this out from the text.
I bring up this question because modern science has created condoms and birth control, the first of which is designed to prevent exchange of bodily fluids, and the other to prevent impregnation.
I suppose the prohibition on showing your private parts would preclude any such possibility... any ideas?
Second question regarding the definition for adultery. Again, the translation is a problem, but does adultery, and hence it's punishment, apply to any sexual relations outside of marriage, or only to sexual relations in which one or either is married to someone else? Also, what is the deal in the case of rape? Are both parties considered to have committed adultery, or just the rapist seeing as there is lack of an intention on part of the victim?
