Who determines the dowry?

It seems to me that there is no set dowry given in the Koran, so how exactly is it set? Is it the bride's decision - i.e. can she demand as much or as little as she wants - any limits?

Salam Claurianta, all,

My understanding of the Quran all these years on this issue of "dowry" is that
there is no "dowry" (often called "mahr" in Arabic). In Quran "ujour" (wages) is mentioned. So if it is about wages, it is always negotiable between the man and the woman or her representative. The story of Moses and how he got married is full of wisdom beside all the verses dealing with "ujour"-).And God the All-MIghty knows best.
Peace. Myr.

But whatever you call it, it is something that is to be paid in full prior to consummating the marriage, right? How about, can the woman decide to forego it totally?

To be able for you to get an answer to your question, you need to know how in Quran the issue is called and addressed. You can not ignore how Quran defines and call things unless you are asking the question in general.
I thought the question was asked in the light of Quran. I am under the impression most of the debates here are on personal views rather than on understanding the wisdom in Quran. So my apologies for sending the previous message and please disregard my previous message. Thank you.Peace. Myr.

Actually, I was looking for it in the context of the Koran... the translation I have says dowry, though I fully well know that it isn't dowry in the traditional western sense of the word, but rather something that is paid to the woman prior to consummating marriage. Therefore, this something that the Koran tells us to give the woman, can the woman simply demand nothing out of her good heart... or to demand much less than she feels she is "worth"?

Dowry is different from haq mahr , mahr is what a husband is supposed to give to his wife as stated by myr.
The mehr can be as low as 32 rupees 8 anaas, which the traditional Muslims believe is a sunnat and the right way. Or it can be millions of rupees depending upon the woman and her family. The amount of haq mehr is only paid if the guy divorces her, if a woman seeks a divorce the guy doesn?t have to pay her anything.
Dowry is what the woman?s family gives her at the time of marriage . This usually includes almost all-basic necessities of a house , jewelry, car, house, land etc
Dowry can bankrupt a woman?s family. there have been many anti dowry movements from time to time but unfortunately it could not be rooted out completely.peace.
