Peace bmbmm. I understand your point, the word muslim is viewed with suspicion in some walks of life. I think it depends on your personal situation and who you are talking to. I class a muslim as someone who tries to achieve peace,or has good morals. The arabic word is misunderstood and much maligned. If someone asks you your religion then how about the dalai lamas quote; 'my religion is kindness'. wink
      Peace all.

        Peace Simple,

When I sad private i mean I do not feel comfortable to tell myself that I am Muslim. I think that I am, but I want to keep that between me and God. If bychance, people realise through my faith in the Prophet and belief in the Quran, and they think that I am a Muslim than thats fine for me. I think the verses got nothing to do with the question. Or could you clarify further.

          Salam bmbmm, all,

I am aware as according to my knowledge from the Quran that Abrahim named us Muslims, is this true, and is it probably because of this people call themselves Muslims? People do not often talk about/discuss faith nowadays and when I am asked whether I am a Muslim, I do not feel that comfortable to answer, as I think its is something private. Although I do say yes. Any the person normally say "so you don't eat pork"?

Some Jews call themselves non-jewish jews. Can the message be propagated withoud a logo? Do you think we have to call ouselves Muslims?

My understanding from the Quran is a believer with a strong faith would follow/practice "ah'ssanu qawlan" (literally the best speech/talk/saying) and part of that best qawlan is to precisely say "innanee mina almuslimeena" (literally I am among/from the muslims/submitters), please read verse 4133 to see my point. So a believer , if he/she thinks of him/herself a submitter (muslim) should not be ashamed or embarassed to say it however, I also understand your situation because of how muslims are portrayed by media and of what is happening in what is considered today the muslim world, verse 16106 would then apply.
Having said that, we have to remember we are not better than the previous generations of believers who have been persecuted for just saying "rabuna Allah" (our Lord is Allah/God the All-Mighty) as per the Quran, in other words, we are tested in this life through our interraction with others . When somebody asks me if I am muslim, I try to see it as an opportunity to show/explain what a muslim means and that is not what they may think and I invite them to more discussion. If they persist in their thinking, well our mind should tell us "so much worse for them, our waly is God the All-Mighty and no need therefore for any sympathy from the disbelievers"!-). You've got to be a bit stronger and not embarassed by others ignorance. Inchallah God theAll-Mighty will make it easy on you.

And God the All-Mighty knows best.

          Peace. Myr.

            Peace be upon all,

In plain English language, the word "muslim" designates "someone submiting himself (or his self) to the peace", it is in fact an attribute not a name or a title. The peace is also an attribute of the god. To be willing for the peace is a behaviour, a way of living we should be striving for, and surely not an easy one with all the tests we go through in our lives.

This sort of behaviour is the necessary starting point on the path to the god. One becomes more receptive and willing to learn and to understand, being in control of his emotions.

On the other hand, a "kafir" is an attribute of "someone being constantly fiery", ungratefull, rejecting the peace, doing harm to his surrounding.

These are the two ways, one leading to a state of peacefullness (what we call "paradise"), and the other leading to a state of extreme stress (Hell).

"muslim" and "kafir" are simply attributes of people, a behaviour telling much on the people around us, it is a simple and precise criteria to know one's direction.

              Peace,

And for the question, you can say that you are a person willing for the peace, serving the peace, not following any religion.

                Salaams ,

?The disciples said We will be Allah's helpers. We believe in Allah, and bear thou witness that we have surrendered (unto Him).?

and as other posts have said it aswell ?I think, there my be situations where we aought to say it ,

like ?I would rather peace? ,it is just a word but a word we want to have as a practice but at the same time to tell we appreciate this quality and will try and stick with this-I think if others learn to know it?s a good thing they may also get the nack , don't you reckon?

                God Bless.

                      Salam someone, all,

I am not sure from where you got that English definition of the word "muslim" but a definition from the Quran is in verses 2131 and 320. It can be clearly seen that we submit to the Lord and not "peace" unless you are calling the Lord peace-) and therefore I think you are confusing "al-salam" with "al-salm" in Quran, however I will leave it here for now because this is not the subject of this thread.

And God the All-Mighty knows best. Peace. Myr.

Peace all. Do we explain words from the quran or from the arabic language? Is the quran a dictionary? If so,how do you know an alif is an alif or how to read the quran from the quran itself? I learnt to read and understand arabic from a textbook, not the quran.
                        Peace all.

Peace upon you Myr, and all

The god is the peace. Thus, submitting to the peace is equivalent to submitting to the god.

                          5923

You say that a "muslim" is a "submitter"; But in English, saying "I'm a submitter" is an incomplete sentence ie. you are submitting to what? To the peace (the god).

somewhere abraham says 'aslamto li rabbilalameen'! this rabbilalameen would perhaps be the god to whom the creation is meant to submit!
