Bride 'forced to work in brothel'

May 10, 2006THIS man's young wife thought she was coming to Australia for love.
But instead of the new life he promised, Foad Ali Solaiman thrust his bride into the sordid world of sexual slavery, a court has heard.
Solaiman, 37, faced Kogarah Local Court yesterday accused of putting the 25-year-old woman to work in a brothel after luring her from her homeland.
The Wiley Park man allegedly travelled to Egypt in early 2000 for the arranged marriage.
The two returned to Australia as husband and wife, but by August, police claim that Solaiman had forced the woman into prostitution.Solaiman allegedly took his wife to the Hideaway Brothel at Banksia, demanding she repay the cost of her Australian visa.
For 2? years the woman was held in sexual slavery, until the couple returned to Egypt in 2002, when they were divorced, the court heard.
Police allege Solaiman used her earnings to buy a home and support his family in Lebanon.
He was arrested at his home last month and charged with three counts of procuring a person for prostitution, and forcing that person to remain in sexual servitude.Dressed in a rollneck sweater and slacks, Solaiman was accompanied by an Arabic interpreter for his first court appearance yesterday.
Legal Aid solicitor Kerry Adra asked for a brief of evidence against Solaiman to be served before his next court date.
The matter will be referred to the Department of Public Prosecutions.
Magistrate Bernard Kennedy continued Solaiman's bail and adjourned the matter to the Downing Centre Local Court next month.IN a separate case yesterday, a Sydney council launched legal action to shut down a brothel operating next to a Catholic girls' school.
Sydney City Council has sought orders from the Land and Environment Court to stop Misty's trading from the Tusculum St, Potts Point premises.
The action follows complaints from St Vincent's College and residents about patron conduct, bad language, increased noise and traffic.
A date is yet to be set for the court case.
